View Full Version : Stupid VS-10 questions ????

Hi all,

I am thinking of getting the Yamaha VS-10 system (to move up from TV's nicam stereo to full DTS :D), but I have a few questions if I may ....

1) I assume the difference between nicam stereo and DTS is awesome ?

2) Is it possible to use the system for normal TV as well as with the DVD player (if not it is going to be a bit of a pain muting the TV sound and turning on the VS-10) ?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Regards,

Adam Brunt

You got that right daddy o:D

The VS-10 has two inputs in the back for your TV, Playstation, Digital box etc. It has two optical inputs for your dvd player and maybe a PS2.. And it's not a pain muting the tv and turning on the VS-10. Just leave the tv with the volume turned all the way down all the time and enjoy tv in dolby pro-logic:)

Highly recommended as a stop gap between a pro-logic setup and a full blown seperates route. Sounds and looks great especially in silver. Multi programmable remote, night mode for playing DD and DTS in the night, non proprietory speaker cable and bargain price. You can get this from leconcepts (http://www.leconcepts.com) for £299 plus £10 delivery. Don't forget you will need a optical cable as well which you might get from leconcepts for free if you asked nicely.

I think I have a Scart to Phono lead somewhere, will this be OK for connecting the TV to the VS-10 ? However, both the Scart sockets on the back of the TV are currently used ... I may have to start daisy chaining some stuff :D

And who knows ... maybe the GameCube comes with digital out as well.

I'm not sure I am after a 'stop gap'. I mean I currently have a budget DVD player [ Scan SC2000 - I know !!! ] which is used in a room measuring about 12' x 8'. I can't see this changing in the foreseeable future. Will the Yamaha be more than adequate in these sorts of conditions ??

Connect your dvd player to the amp by an optical cable. And if you get a Gamecube or PS2....likewise. I only have two scart sockets on my TV and I have the dvd player and video connected to these. My digi box. is connected through the video. To connect the tv to the amp I have used phono cables although whether this gives me dolby pro-logic is anyone's guess...sounds good though:)

Yeah I only said stop gap as I couldn't think of a any better wording. The VS-10 is the best of the convenient life style amp and speaker packages IMO, although you could get a seperate amp and speakers for abit more. Ask Justin from upgradeheaven for advice if you want to go this route. I can't see myself changing for maybe a couple of years, really depends in the purse strings:D The VS-10 is plenty loud for the time being and will be for many years to come. One thing you need to check is if the Scan outputs a DTS and a DD5.1 signal for the amp to read.

Hope this little lot is of some help:)

I'm not sure my TV has phono sockets on it (which is why I had a Scart-2-phono cable) ... I''ll have to check.

As you say, the VS-10 would appear to be loud enough for my room. The 'separates' route is all very well and good but, in my case, I think a little over the top. I was at first considering a Digitheatre but have decided it is too 'pc looking' if you know what I mean, whereas (as you say) the VS-10 would not look out of place in a living room ...especially the silver version :).

I am pretty sure the Scan outputs DD5.1 and DTS. I did have one worry early that it didn't output via digital optical (which the VS-10 requires, yes) only co-ax. However I have since found out this is not the case.

Hope this little lot is of some help:)

It has been a great help. I just need to convince the missus that we need it. Mind you, this shouldn't be too difficult - when she heard our friend's system for the first time she was awestruck (looking behind her to see where the sound was coming from, etc).

Anyways, thanks for the help ... I will shortly be a proud VS-10 owner.

Glad to be of some help Adam. Looks like you may well have to daisy chain the scart leads:(

That was what put me off the digi theartre as well. The centre speaker is ugly looking indeed. In any case it doesn't sound as good as the Yamaha. If you are set on the VS-10 i'll throw another alternative at you, the Sony HTK 215. Looks very much like the Yamaha but available from your local Curry's etc. Price I think is £349. Check it out but the Yamaha is still better IMO.

Yes, the VS-10 only accepts an optical lead for DD & DTS sound. One other tip is if you are not keen on screwing the speakers to the back wall try Ikea. They have some speaker stands that are perfect for the VS-10 speakers. £15 a pair if my memory serves me right for the bigger and £12 for the smaller.

Drop me an e-mail if you need any other advice and enjoy the Yammy:)
