We have managed to get hold of a copy of the Deluxe Limited Edition of Azumi, 2003's offering from the same director who brought us the excellent Japanese zombi-massacre that is Versus. You can find our review of Azumi here (http://www.dvddebate.com/article.php?sid=3824&mode=&order=0&thold=).

That looks like my kind of film, will have to go and buy it then. :D

Cheers (looks like 2004 will be another expensive year for DVDs),

It's not bad. I thought the cinematography was beautiful, but some of the acting is awful and the fight scenes looked really staged and unnatural at some points. Saving points are the main bad guy who is gloriously over the top :D and of course Azumi herself :luv:

Not sure if i would recommend buying the expensive LE version if you haven't already seen the film though.

Good film, to be honest I found Versus very boring. This film was very entertaining and Azumi is hooooot.

Versus was just an above average B-movie flick tbh so there's noway I'm gonna spend big bucks on this Japanese release.
Hopefully a cheap HK R3 or US R1 release will be out soon.

It seems that people who hated Versus liked Azumi more. :D I preferred Versus personally. The action is quite poor in Azumi.

The action is a bit hit and miss in Azumi, but the action towards the end of the film is very good in my opinion and this is also greatly improved by some really impressive camera angles. Overall though I found it very entertaining. :)

It's kinda open to a sequel. :D

Wonder if anyone will revisit this or get a Holywood remake treatment (the latter would not surprise me).

I can't really see any samurai films being remade in hollywood, the whole concept is forgien....unless they have some american actor playing the main character.

I thought the action in Azumi was good, it did annoy me that the blades did not actually cut people and blood did not squit out all over the place, but I forgive it.

I'll just have to wait for Zatoichi.

Yes exactly

To have a non Japanese samuai would be unrealistic.

I have not watched the last samurai so i don't know how they get around the language problem, do the Japanese speak english? Does Tom Cruise speak Japanese?

Which has already been made, the rights have already been bought up for the UK DVD.

What happened there with the quote???

I loved Azumi for it's comic book (or rather manga I guess) style. I'm not sure my bum could survive a longer version though.

Azumi II is only going to be 1.5 hours.

The picture quality is fantastic. It will be in the cinemas in Japan in the near future

Can't wait.

Who's distributing this in the UK? Optimum again? :oh-hum:

Yeah, I hope they don't do burnt in subs again. I think I might get hold of the Japanese copy, it is one of the few japanese titles with english subs.
Mind you the only english DVD I've ever seen with Japanese subs is 'head' the monkeys movie so we're not doing so bad.

:( The uk dvd has subs though don't it? I'd be happy with just the extra footage of the lead actress though tbh. :n0rty:

£50  I will have to keep my eyes open for some of these. I am sure I can get them cheaper than that. I will look in HMV and a couple of other places tomorrow.

I am back in Japan at the moment and I will be looking for more :)

I am trying to work out how much space I will have in my luggage after my DVDs and the 2 PSP I hope to be bringing back. If I have enough space (or weight limit) I will be doing another "what do you want thread".

If I don't do it before christmas I will do one in Janurary when I go back again (3 months in Japan (apart from the chrsitmas break) is Fantastic!!!!)

Can you resend the list, I am having to use webmail here and don't have it.

I will keep an eye out for the Alien head (but you would probably get hit by customs for it as it is a BIG box) How much were you quoted for the Head and Postage from HMV.co.jp?

I have still not watched my Azumi yet.

Inigo Montoya
26-11-2004, 17:16
ok will resend to your forums address

re : alien head - dont mind if I get hit by customs but you could at least mark it down just in case - I actually managed to order a single one that came up on hmv a while back but they asked me for a load more in shipping fees after I ordered which took the total cost above what I was willing to pay - if you find one then LMK

you are seriously missing out if you havent watched Azumi although I think I liked the film even more than anybody else here - I watched the director cut as well but I still wanted more when it finished

Saw this on the Jon Ross program the other night and it caught my interest. Anywhere where you can still get the Azumi Deluxe Japanese version (or can anyone recommend a good way of sourcing it apart from EBay ?)

The film isn't good enough to justify spending megabucks on it f drew. Buy a cheaper edition and you're less likely to feel cheated. (I personally did enjoy Azumi to an extent, but like most of Kitamura's feature-length films it's way too long).
