View Full Version : DTS decoder question
Hi,
Do I absolutely need a DTS decoder to watch DTS DVDs? What happens if you watch DTS using a Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder?
Cheers in advance
Glorious silence old bean....
If you have a DD only amp, try the Wharfedale M5 player for £150 from Tesco Extra - it has a dts decoder on board :)
most amps, do output dts. However, if the amp can't decode it, you just get the raw sound of the data. It apparently can blow your speakers (assuming you believe stuff written on some of the dvd's).
My amp yamaha dsp-a1, autodetects, and for the split second it tries to work out what it is, it output noise, then switches to glorious dts.

But, you need to make sure that your DD amp has 5.1 analog inputs to take the 6 outputs of the player.
To be honest DTS is not a big loss if you have a decent DD amp.
Ta guys,
wot a wealth of info!
I was considering just buying an amp with DD5.1 only.... but now I wont bother... I really cant be bothered reading the subtitles for a whole movie! haha..
Cheers again

Most DTS discs have a DD2.0 track encoded in them, so you'd at least get the option of stereo if your amp is sans DTS.
hmmm...ok.
So, what percentage of DVDs are in DTS?

Difficult to put a percentage on it but out of ~7000 DVDs released so far.
R1 - <5% maybe.
R2 - 0.0000001%
:p
