View Full Version : Mission FS2-AV in a Denon or EX/ES setup?
anyone using the Mission FS2-AV with a rear centre speaker?
very tempted to get these, but interested if its feasible to have a rear centre speaker doing DD EX/ DTS ES duties.
I'm assuming you can just buy one of the kits with 2 or 3 speakers in, and plug the panel directly into the amp?
considering buying a new amp at the same time, probably the Denon 2802.. any denon owners using these speakers?

I have the fs2-av and wondered about this (for future proofing) and found a few posts on another forum that said you shoul get the two speaker set with sub.
Using just the two speaker set and plugging directly into the amp wouldnt work correctly as you'd be losing the bass for those two speakers.
Not sure of the price for the two speakers + sub though (I paid the bargain price of £411 for my fs2-av)

I wondered about this, but surely you CAN plug in 1 or 2 speakers (depending on amp) directly as the rear centre.
In a Dolby Digital EX setup (and DTS ES non-discrete?) the sound is matrixed from the left & right rears.... so surely the bass is
there in the signal to these speakers and should be sufficient.
(just guessing here... anyone confirm this?).
alternatively, is it possible to use a standard front centre speaker (with inherently better bass and matching tone), and wire up the sub-driven flat speaker as the rear centre instead?
how do you find the speaker set anyway? (just about to buy them myself from QED)
final question... are they silver (as listed) or really grey?

got them from QED after reading about them here (or was is the avforums?) ordered and took a week to deliver - no problems at all.
Site described them as 'silver', I would describe them as grey/green
As far as the ex two speaker additions, am sure I read that in order to benefit fully from the speakers you need the sub partnered with them, something to do with the dedicated amp carrying out the crossover?
And how do they sound? well I had a tannoy mercury setup (MC, M1, M3) which had a low GAF (girlfriend acceptance factor) so I consider the FS2-AV a sideways move. Only had them 3 days and still fiddling with the various dials on my sony 940 - first impressions are that they are pretty good for such a thin, small size, I do feel I have lost something though from the mercury setup...

hmmm.. that would a pain.. guess I'll give it a try or contact a dealer...
failing that.. what about my suggestion of a standard centre speaker (presumeably mission?) and then run the remaining flattie as the rear centre.
Interesting though... I also currently have a Tannoy mercury setup and want to get the FS2s for their high WAF in my soon-to-be new house.
I know the speakers are meant to be quite hard to drive sensitivity-wise so not sure about the Sony 940... certainly seen them reviewed with much more expensive kit in What-Hifi (arcam & denon high-end).

I looked at some of these yesterday on a jaunt down tottenham court road (looking at the m7x series). Took some literature and of course my girlfriend instantly liked them.
If you daisy chain the two fronts, would you also need a sub as well (or does the bass carry from the other one). The literature didn't really cover any of this.
e.g could I get the additional 3 speaker pack, daisy chain the fronts and the use the 3rd directly in the amp for 6.1.
Or would you need to connect them through another sub?

Yeah, I dont see why that wouldnt work, a point worth noting is that the speakers need to be driven quite hard (point you mentioned) With my Tannoys the 940 was at the 2 for regular listening and 3 if I really wanted to shake the room. With the FS2 It needs 3-5 (and my rooms not that big) So you'd need to match the center well.

Well, i've just plumped for a set from QED (i figured would be quite easy to offload on ebay if I don't like them and get my money back).
I'm also gonna think of the best way to get them into a 6.1 set up, so will let you know how I get in. I figure that because of the way these speakers work it would be OK to have 1 rear centre, as the sound will be spread out anyway. Interesting idea about adding a standard centre, my other plan would be to get the 3 speaker upgrade from QED also (not much more to get the whole bunch again though), but will see how I get on first of all.
