EBAY
<a name="ebay1">1. What is eBay?</a>
You are joking? No? The world’s biggest and most well known online auction site. Online “Loot” or car-boot sale if you will, chances are you’ll find somebody selling Mach3 razor blades and toilet rolls.
<a name="ebay2">2. Are there any alternatives to eBay?</a>
Yes, QXL (www.qxl.com), Amazon Marketplace (www.amazon.co.uk), eBid (www.ebid.co.uk) and the Classified forums here at The DVD Forums (General Classifieds (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=12), DVD Classifieds (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=20) and Adult DVD Classifieds (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=32)).

GENERAL
<a name="general1">1. How can I be a good seller?</a>
Maintain good communication throughout the sale. Don’t ignore mails, even from prospective buyers – how would you like it if you emailed a shop and they never responded? Chances are you’d go somewhere else.
Set out your postage costs within the auction description, as well as using the appropriate fields on the auction. Don’t just set a flat rate £5 postage charge, find an appropriate service for the item that will provide sufficient insurance and tracking abilities. Check the weight of your item including packing – possibly add a little to cover your own time, and charge this to the buyer.
Remain polite throughout; all too often simple misunderstandings can explode when people make accusations about theft and fraud.
<a name="general2">2. How can I be a good buyer?</a>
When emailing, be patient – the seller is a normal person who probably works nine to five, don’t expect instant responses to your questions.
Pay as soon as you can, following the instructions provided – many buyers ignore these instructions and wait for the seller to contact them, however on the flip-side the seller knows they’ve already provided you with the necessary details, so doesn’t bother to send them again.
If you are planning on paying using an online payment service such as PayPal or NoChex, get your account set up before hand – it can take up to a week to get your security details confirmed and the account activated. If you have problems making payment, let the seller know.
Once you have received the item, remember to leave feedback for the seller. If you’re not happy with the item, contact the seller first – don’t just leave negative feedback.
<a name="general3">3. How can I achieve a good price for my item?</a>
There are some things you can do as a seller to make sure you get the best price possible for your item:
Research how other sales of the same item went. When you do a search, the first results will show currently running auctions - see how much interest there is in these auctions, check the "Buy-It-Now" prices offered by other sellers. On the right side of the results page will be a link for "completed items" - click this and you will see the most recent auctions to have completed, what prices they went for (if they sold at all) and how many bids were placed.
Buyers will always look at your feedback, so ensure that you do everything you can to ensure 100% feedback.
Put detail into your auction, mention and faults or scratches, but avoid playing them up - "minor mark" sounds better than "scratched". Describe the features of what you're selling, in your own words - don't just copy and paste somebody else's auction, make yours stand out.
Where possible take a photo, or even several. If you have free web space you can link as many photos in your auction as you like. However be sure to shrink these to a size suitable for the web - not everybody will have broadband, and won't be happy if you have images that are over 100K in size.
If your item has sold everytime in the past, consider a starting price of 99p - this will give you the lowest listing fee, and will stir more interest. People follow people - if bids have already been placed, more will follow as people are encouraged to see somebody else has faith in you.
Time your item to finish either at lunch time, or in the early evening on the weekend. Many people avoid bidding to the last possible moment, so you need a time when most people are able to use their PC.
List fair postage prices that represent actual postage costs, rather than including surcharges.
Avoid reserve prices, this can put people off as they may believe you have set an unrealistically high price on top of an unreal low starting price. Thanks to darrenackers for this question.
<a name="general4">4. What is the best time to start/end an auction?</a>
There are many buyers that wait till the last possible moment to bid on an auction, and there are many people who only look through the "finishing now" auctions. This means that the best time to finish your auction is when most people have access to their PC, so either after tea at the weekends (6pm - 8pm) or lunchtimes on weekdays to catch office workers.
<a name="general5">5. How can be sure I'm not going to be ripped off?</a>
There are many unscrupulous people on eBay, however there is no reason why you should be caught out. Follow the simple rules:
Never buy from any seller that reveals that they don't live within the UK or Western Europe - anything listed by somebody in Asia, such as Thailand or Indonesia is guaranteed to be a scam.
Never make payment by Western Union transfer.
Always query any offer to buy outside of an auction. Many people are sent information by sellers after they have bid on a similar auction offering a lower price than they've bid, as long as it isn't on the eBay site.
Read the full description on the auction, question the seller in good time before the end of the auction on anything you are unsure about.
Always check the feedback, look through any negative or neutral feedback comments made about the seller - what is the record like for the buyer that made the comment? Can the negative feedback be trusted? A feedback score of less than 90% is probably worth avoiding.
Check a seller's previous auctions, have they sold this sort of item before? A stolen account can be revealed by the fact that "ArmyBoy" has stopped listing toy soldiers and is suddenly selling 42" plasma screen TVs.
Remember, if you choose to buy outside of eBay and not bid on auction, despite what the seller may claim, you will not be covered by eBay insurance should your items not arrive.
<a name="general6">6. I've lost the contact details for the buyer/seller, what can I do?</a>
You can use this form (http://cgi3.ebay.co.uk/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?MemberSearchShow) to get the contact details for any eBay user, as long as you've recently been involved in a sale with them.
<a name="general7">7. Can I talk to someone from eBay?</a>
You can't talk to eBay over the phone, however they do have a live chat feature, where you can even have the transcript of your conversation emailed to you. eBay Live Chat (http://livechat.ebay.com/Chat/servlet/AppMain?grp=Activation&__lFILE=index.jsp)
<hr size=1>
THE AUCTION
<a name="auction1">1. Does eBay cost anything?</a>
Oh yes!
Placing a listing costs between 15p and £2, depending on the starting price of your auction. On top of this you are charged a final value fee (a percentage of the final selling price) and are also charged for any extras you may choose to add – for example “Buy It Now”, gallery, bold, featured listing, etc.
eBay’s fee’s are explained in full here (http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/sell/fees.html).
<a name="auction2">2. How do I pay the fees?</a>
eBay build an account and bill you on a monthly basis. New eBayers must sign up using a credit or debit card, or will have set up a direct debit facility from their account. Older account holders have the option of paying using cheque. You may also pay fee’s using PayPal.
<a name="auction3">3. What if I don’t or can’t pay?</a>
eBay will suspend your account until you do.
<a name="auction4">4. A lot of people list using HTML, can I?</a>
Yes, when you are creating your listing, be sure to be in the basic mode and you can enter any HTML you like, including JavaScript functions.
However don’t get too carried away, especially with JavaScript – it can be off putting!
<a name="auction5">5. I don’t know HTML, can I still “jazz-up” my listings?</a>
Yes, when you create your listing you can choose a template layout, and there is also a word processor style box where you adjust colours, size, style, positioning, etc just like you would in Word.
<a name="auction6">6. Should I include a picture of my item?</a>
If you can, yes! A picture can tell a thousand words – and will put the buyers mind at rest as to what you are saying you’re selling is what you’re selling.
If you can, take actual photos rather than using photos taken from another website - when the auction is over, the buyer can’t suggest that what they received isn’t what they got, as you actually showed it to them.
<a name="auction7">7. How does “Buy-It-Now” work?</a>
If you run an auction with the “Buy-It-Now” option enabled, until a bid has been placed, buyers will have the option to decide to go with your predefined price, instead of playing the auction game. This has the benefit of a quicker sale at a price you named, and the buyer can be sure they’re going to get the item.
As soon as a bid is placed, the option is lost and nobody will be able to “Buy-It-Now”.
However, if you run “Buy-It-Now” on an auction with a reserve price, the button will remain until the auction price has risen above the reserve that you set.
To be able to sell using “Buy-It-Now” you must either have a feedback rating of 10 or more, or be registered to pay your fees using direct debit.
More about “Buy-It-Now” (http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/sell/bin.html).
<a name="auction8">8. A buyer has emailed me asking what the reserve price is, should I tell them?</a>
There really is no harm in doing so – the worst that they can do is bid a price that you want meaning that it will sell for your minimum price.
<a name="auction9">9. A buyer has emailed me and offered to pay a higher price than the auction has reached if I end early, should I?</a>
Entirely up to you. However this is really against eBay rules (http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/listing-circumventing.html) (as they lose out on fees).
If you end early, you won’t get a refund of the fees you have already been charged, however you won’t be charged any final value fees. You won’t be able to leave feedback for one another, and the buyer does not receive cover under the eBay insurance scheme should you not pay up. Obviously there really aren’t many pitfalls as the seller.
<a name="auction10">10. Does the gallery, bold or purple banner actually help sell my item?</a>
If there are a lot of people selling the same item as you – then probably. Obviously eBay will say it will – it’s in their interest to say that. However look around listings – chances are you will find your eye is drawn to those that are highlighted in someway.
<a name="auction11">11. I have lots of items to sell, is there anyway to prepare them offline and upload them together?</a>
Yes, check out Turbo Lister, eBay’s free listing tool. It allows you to create a single listing and duplicate it, adjusting the details as necessary (handy for similar items).
Be sure to get Turbo Lister to check the cost of your auctions before you go ahead and upload – if you’ve accidentally ticked the wrong box you could be charged a lot (hit the featured listing box and you’ll find a £50 charge on your account!)
Turbo Lister (http://pages.ebay.co.uk/turbo_lister/).
<a name="auction12">12. I made a mistake in my auction, can I correct it?</a>
Yes as long as your auction has not received any bids and still has 12 hours to run you can make alterations to any of the details on the page. Otherwise you may only make additions to your description at the end.
<a name="auction13">13. I’m currently the highest bidder, is it possible to increase my maximum bid?</a>
Yes, just bid again with your new price – eBay will then bid up to this bid on your behalf should anyone bid against you.
<a name="auction14">14. I made a mistake; can I reduce or withdraw my bid?</a>
You can’t reduce your maximum bid; however you can withdraw your bid. However this is looked badly against, and your feedback page will show how many times you have withdrawn bids.
PAYMENT
<a name="payment1">1. What is PayPal?</a>
A payment service run by the same people who run eBay, hence it is shoved down your throat at every opportunity. Because it is integrated into eBay, it is the most popular, quickest and easiest method of payment on eBay.
<a name="payment2">2. Does PayPal cost anything?</a>
Yes and no.
When you first open your PayPal account, you will be given a “Personal Account”. The personal account allows you to receive money sent direct from other people’s accounts.
However, if somebody wants to send you money using their credit card, PayPal will tell you that they want to do this, and to receive the money you must upgrade this to a “Premier Account”. Once upgraded, you can’t downgrade. Now all payments that you receive will have a charge of 3.4% and 20p added.
For example, say your buyer is sending you £10, you will actually receive into your PayPal account £10 – 34p (3.4%) – 20p = £9.46.
When you decide to withdraw, you can do so to your UK current account. Withdrawals over £50 are free, £49.99 or under incur a charge of 25p.
Fees are explained in full here (http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-fees-outside).
<a name="payment3">3. Can I pass the charges on to the buyer?</a>
No, as of 6th June 2004 eBay have withdrawn the right to charge a surcharge on payments - unless you're a business with a merchant account with a bank for handling credit and debit card payments. more info (http://www.ebay.co.uk/sell/surcharge.html)
<a name="payment4">4. My buyer made a mistake in payment using PayPal, what can I do?</a>
You can issue a refund through the PayPal site back to the buyer, as long as you do this within 30 days of the buyer making payment, then the fees will also be refunded.
<a name="payment5">5. Is it safe to pay using PayPal?</a>
In February 2004, PayPal became a UK limited company meaning that as they're offering financial services, they are bound by the rules in the UK - meaning better protection for UK customers.
Rulings that now cover PayPal include:
E-Money Act E-Commerce Act Data Protection Act Unfair Contract Terms Act Distance Selling of Financial Services Act
With the change to a UK limited company, PayPal now offers buyer protection which was previously only available to US buyers buying from US sellers.
The cover is for up to £250 on a single auction where actual items are not delivered. An auction must have the ticked shield visible on the auction page to be covered - PayPal auctomatically inserts this on behalf of the seller.
PayPal Buyer Protection (https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_pbp-info-outside)
<a name="payment6">6. How do I ensure my auctions are covered by the PayPal Buyer Protection policy?</a>
To be covered by the Buyer Protection policy, you must:
Have 50 or more feedback comments left about you. 98% or higher feedback rating. Are a verified member of PayPal Hold a Premier PayPal account. Have paid all fees due.
It is ideal to ensure you are covered by the policy, as it is an extra insentive for buyers to buy from you.
PayPal Buyer Protection (https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_pbp-info-outside)
<a name="payment7">7. What are the alternatives to PayPal?</a>
www.nochex.com (99p to upload money from a debit card, free to send and receive, 99p or 1% of the value (whichever is higher) to withdraw money to a bank account)
www.fastpay.com (free to send money, 9p to receive and 2.9% to withdraw)
www.egg.com (free to load, send, receive and withdraw using debit cards or bank account)
NoChex is fairly well known on eBay, FastPay has some presence, Egg Pay is virtually unheard of.
<a name="payment8">8. Is it safe for me to send item immediately if buyer pays using Postal Orders?</a>
As long as they're real, yes. Postal Orders can be exchanged for cash at any post office, or used in part payment for services provided by the post office. Official postal orders will have stamps to the value of the postal order on them, and will have been stamped by the issuing post office. Obviously when you send your item to the buyer, you can take along the postal order they paid you with and confirm it's authenticity before sending the item.
<a name="payment9">9. The buyer has not made contact with me, what should I do?</a>
eBay define the following process:
After three days send a payment reminder (done by clicking the icon against the listing within “my eBay”).
After seven days file a non-paying bidder alert (go here (http://cgi3.ebay.co.uk/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?NPBComplaintForm))
Ten days after filing the non-paying bidder alert, you can claim a refund of your final value fees here (http://cgi3.ebay.co.uk/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?CreditRequest) (but frustratingly not your original listing fees).
Leave negative feedback against the buyer to warn other sellers that this buyer doesn’t always pay.
Block the bidder from bidding against your items again in the future here (http://offer.ebay.co.uk/ws2/eBayISAPI.dll?bidderblocklogin).You could also try getting the buyer's phone number using this form (http://cgi3.ebay.co.uk/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?MemberSearchShow), and giving them a call.
eBay’s Non Paying Bidder Policy (http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/sell/ia/non_paying_bidder_policy.html)
<a name="payment10">10. The buyer would like to make a payment from their bank account to mine, is it safe for me to provide the buyer with my account details?</a>
Yes. All they will need is the sort code, account number and the name the account is under. These details are provided on any cheque you write – and you’d be happy to hand these details to a stranger when making payment to them (wouldn’t you?)
A payment to your account should take three to four working days to clear – if they happen to bank with the same bank, it could clear on the same day or even instantly.
<a name="payment11">11. The buyer would like to pay by cheque, how long should I wait for it to clear?</a>
Most cheques will take four working days to clear once you have given it to your bank. However note that it may appear against your account online as soon as the bank has received it. There is no real clear-and-fast way to know a cheque has cleared, a cheque can bounce any time up to (a reported) six months after you have banked it! (in the case of stolen cheques).
Allow a time you are comfortable with – personally with small cheques (less than £10) I send the item immediately, as it is highly unlikely a cheque will bounce – and this provides a better service to my buyers.
<a name="payment12">12. I’ve paid the seller, but he hasn’t sent the item. How do I get my money back?</a>
eBay cover all auctions with an insurance policy, the excess is £15 but they will only refund up to £105. This is explained here (http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/confidence/items-fraud.html).
If you paid via PayPal, you can also complain to them here (http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=p/gen/buyer-complaint-outside).
If you paid using another online facility, check their FAQ's and terms and conditions - each will handle problems differently. For example NoChex will not enter into discussion on items that have failed to arrive or that are delivered faulty - they will intervene only if asked to do so by the police.
<a name="payment13">13. How do I load money into my PayPal account so that I can make a payment?</a>
With PayPal you can't load money into the account. If you wish to pay somebody, you must register a debit or credit card against the account. If you don't have enough in your account, the extra money needed will simply be taken off your card. The only way to get money into your account is to receive payments from other PayPal users.
<hr size=1>
POSTAGE
<a name="postage1">1. When should I send my item to the buyer?</a>
Only once you have received payment and it has cleared.
<a name="postage2">2. How can I send items to a buyer?</a>
Most things will be cheapest via Royal Mail. They have a postage calculator on their website. Remember whatever option you use, be sure to get proof of postage, and preferably proof of delivery.
If you send an item via first class (http://www.royalmail.com/link/rm/jump2?catId=400028&mediaId=400029) or second class (http://www.royalmail.com/link/rm/jump2?catId=400028&mediaId=400030), you can request a proof of postage certificate free of charge from the post office. This will be useful should you have to claim for lost items.
Recorded Delivery (http://www.royalmail.com/link/rm/jump2?catId=400028&mediaId=500201) costs 65p on top of first or second class postage, and will allow you to confirm via the Royal Mail website (http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/track) that the item has been delivered, or is waiting for collection at the buyer’s local sorting office.
Should an item be lost or damaged in the post, first class and second class only allow you to claim up to £28 from the post office (100 times the cost of a first class stamp – whenever stamps go up in price, so does the compensation level).
Special Delivery (http://www.royalmail.com/link/rm/content1?catId=400026&mediaId=400150) provides guaranteed next working day delivery (or your postage costs refunded) and allows you to insure your items to much higher values. You can also track where your item is (http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/track) via the Royal Mail website.
For larger items, you can also use the Royal Mail Standard Parcel Service (http://www.royalmail.com/link/rm/jump2?catId=400028&mediaId=400031), which works out a lot cheaper than first class or special delivery. Delivery is made in 3 to 5 working days, and you can insure your item. There is no tracking or proof of delivery available; however you will receive proof of posting.
<a name="postage3">3. What alternatives are there to the Royal Mail?</a>
Parcel2Go (http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click?p=14672&a=60823&g=94545)
www.parcelforce.co.uk
<a name="postage4">4. My buyer says they haven’t received the item, what should I do?</a>
If you send the item via a method you can track, check where it is. Quite often buyers don’t realise that delivery has already been attempted and is waiting somewhere to be collected.
If it’s been collected, they’re either trying to pull a fast one, or somebody else has signed for it and not informed them. Let them know and give them the details necessary to view the information for themselves.
If you can’t track the item, follow the instructions on the courier’s website, issuing the buyer a refund. It’s up to you as to whether you refund before or after you’ve reclaimed the costs from your courier.
Ultimately it is your responsibility to claim for lost items, not the buyer's. Remember to think how you’d prefer to be treated were the roles reversed.
<a name="postage5">5. The buyer would like to collect in-person from my house, should I let them?</a>
Entirely up to you. If you are uncomfortable with the idea perhaps arrange a time when you won’t be home alone. In this case accept only cash, not cheque. I’ve met a few buyers, and they were all normal friendly people.
RETURNS
<a name="returns1">1. My buyer has received the item, but doesn’t want it, what should I do?</a>
You are under no obligation to refund them – it’s up to you. You could offer to refund minus a “restocking” fee (say 10% or 20%) and the original cost of the eBay fees, with them covering the costs of return postage.
<a name="returns2">2. My buyer has received the item, but claims it is faulty, what should I do?</a>
The best option is to get them to send it back to you, at their cost. If you find the item is faulty and they have a fair claim, you should refund the original auction, postage and return postage to them. If the item is working, you could send the item back (after they have sent you the money to return it) or you could offer to refund the price they paid, as suggested above.
<hr size=1>
FEEDBACK
<a name="feedback1">1. When should I leave feedback for the buyer?</a>
Many sellers leave feedback as soon as they have received payment from the buyer. However, should you later have problems (for example the buyer wants a refund) you will be unable to leave feedback.
You may prefer to wait until the buyer has left you feedback, as at this point you will know the transaction is complete and can leave accurate feedback.
<a name="feedback2">2. When should I leave feedback for the seller?</a>
As soon as you have received your item and are happy with it.
<a name="feedback3">3. When should I leave neutral feedback?</a>
When the purchase has been completed but not to satisfaction – say the buyer took too long to pay, or the seller took too long to post the item to you. Neutral may also be ideal when the item doesn’t strictly match the description.
<a name="feedback4">4. When should I leave negative feedback?</a>
When the purchase just hasn’t worked. The buyer didn’t make payment on time, the seller didn’t send the item, the item is nothing like described and the seller is unwilling to refund you.
Don’t leave feedback in the heat of the moment – feedback left by you can count against you as it is possible to look up the feedback left by one person for others.
<a name="feedback5">5. Can I change feedback I left for somebody?</a>
As of February 9th 2004 - to an extent! It is now possible to ask for a rating to be removed, as long as both the seller and buyer agree. However the comment will remain against the record, only the + or - will be removed from the users feedback score. To start the process you can use the form here (http://cgi2.ebay.co.uk/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?MFWRequest).
<a name="feedback6">6. Can I add follow-up comments or react to a statement made against me?</a>
Yes, remember to make sure that any comment you make that may react against a negative comment shows you in a good light.
Respond to feedback (http://cgi2.ebay.co.uk/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?PersonalizedFeedbackLogin).
<a name="feedback7">7. A buyer bought two items from me in two separate auctions, why has my feedback rating only gone up by one?</a>
Multiple positives or negatives left by a single buyer or seller only count as one. This is to prevent people from setting up two accounts and setting up fake auctions between the two in an attempt to inflate their feedback rating.
If you view your feedback page, you will see that the actual number of positive feedbacks left as well as your feedback rating.
<a name="feedback8">8. The buyer/seller hasn’t left feedback, is there anything I can do?</a>
Email and politely remind them that you have left them (good!) feedback, and you’d appreciate it if they’d do the same for you. Don’t pester them though, they might leave a negative comment complaining about how you won’t leave them alone.
<hr size=1>
SECURITY
<a name="security1">1. I’ve received an email from eBay or PayPal asking me to log in to confirm my details, is it real?</a>
In all likelihood, no! Emails surface all the time pretending to be from eBay or PayPal. They can very easily look official, with an @ebay.com or @paypal.com address. However these are very easy to forge – don’t be taken in. If you are concerned, go to http://www.ebay.co.uk or https://www.paypal.com yourself and log in – do not use any links provided in the email, they could redirect you to a fake site.
eBay and PayPal will never ask you to reconfirm your details, they will not ask for your social security number (the American equivalent of the National Insurance number), credit card number, credit card pin number, etc. These are all details a fraudster could use to steal money from you (and very easily).
If you are ever unsure, forward the email (using the forward facility in your email, not copy and paste) to spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com.
eBay’s policy (http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/confidence/problems-account-theft.html), PayPal’s policy (http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_help-ext&eloc=601&loc=596&unique_id=2104&source_page=_home&flow=).
<a name="security2">2. Someone’s stolen my eBay account and set up an auction! What do I do?</a>
Don’t worry, contact eBay following the instructions on this page (http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/confidence/problems-account-theft.html). eBay will cancel all auctions that you didn’t set up, refund any fees and remove any feedback that is nothing to do with you – essentially returning your account to its original state.

He hasn't sold anything for a while? Best thing to look for is whether what you want to buy is out of character in comparison to his past sales. Did he used to sell £5 pairs of socks, but is now selling a 42" Plasma at an unbelievable £800. If so, chances are his account has been knicked.

Maybe he gave up selling on ebay due to the vat issue and just decided to give it another go, that's what i did.
another question - when you are selling you have the option of using ebay's hosting at 12p or hosting your own. Is hosting the pics on your own webspace free? If so DOH! I could have saved myself 72p :(

You can put what you like in the listing and have HTML links to images hosted wherever you like. These are free. However, the gallery image will cost you (the one that comes up in the list before you go into the item).
TurboLister will let you specify images hosted elsewhere but as said before, check the costs before uploading as there are certain options that may cost.

EXCELLENT!
It would be good idea to add tips on how to improve your chances of getting a better price for your item.
Here's a few to add.
Feedback is important, the more positive feedback you have the more people will trust you.
A good clear detailed description will tell the buyer everything they need to know about the item and more.
A good picture of the actual item your selling, you can also link to other images on your webspace.
Search for 'completed items' similar to yours so you know how well they sell and what price you are likely to get.
If you know that previous item have sold well, start your item off at 99p, as this incurs the lowest fee. You will interest various people who will bid on it, and want to be the 'winner' when the item ends. If your not sure if it will sell, start your item off at the lowest price you will accept.
Time your item to end when you think most people will be on their computer waiting for it to end. Items can double in price in the last few minute as people out bid each other. These times are usually in the evening when people are at home on their PC. The most popular time however is Sunday evening as people have been looking for items to buy over the weekend. Don't end items in the middle of the night or early morning.
Don't add a payment surcharge or over price postage, this will put people off.
Try not to add a reserve price, as they may put people off. Although this is sometimes neccesary.
All these tips will make the buyer more likely to bid on your item, and so your likely to get a higher price for it.
Hope these help, feel free to add more.

another question. Anyone know of any tools for chasing up feedback.
Seller manager lets me chase up the buyers - no problem at all.
How can I chase up the people who have sold to me though. Any free tools or links to do this?
Just noticed this morning (thursday) that ebay UK have now gone over to the US feedback layout. Looks good.

I have a question that isn't really answered in the FAQ.
I have just started using Ebay, and I was selling some DVD's. Now that the guy has won the auction I contacted him and he wants to pay by Cheque, which is fine by me.
However, do I still need to click the Invoice button on my selling screen? Or is that only for Paypal transactions?

now,
all the rules pertaining to ebay seem to be to protect the seller - what is there to protect the buyer??
If for example i bought a car, and upon seeing the car found it was a complete ash-tray - can i refuse to buy?

In this case you'd use escrow, to ensure both sides are happy. A third party holds the money and if you're not happy you return the item and get the money back. If you're happy they release the money to the seller.
There might be other protections for cars, but to be honest I would never buy a car without checking it myself first and getting something like an AA inspection done. Insist on that before bidding, but you'd need some legal come back that the car you actually get is the car you saw.

I haven't read the changes in full yet but I guess it should have the benefit of protection under UK law now they're operating as a UK business, which could be good for consumer purchase protection.
Also they've now been granted status as an electronic funds thingy (I forget what the correct term is ;)), which I think means they can be treated like a bank and can you can hold a lot more funds in your account as before under EU rules they weren't allowed to (or something like that).
I have an EBay question... A number of unscrupulous individuals are selling tickets for the Carling Cup final so make a quick buck i.e. ticket touting.
Myself and a few aquantances are objecting to this by bidding stupid amount to win the auction.
Is this a) ethical b) legal?

Probably making things worse by doing so if not binding yourself to a legal obligation to buy (not that anyone enforces these kinds of things).
The simple answer is to report them to ebay and get the auction cancelled.
The re-selling of Football Tickets is prohibited on ebay and also a criminal offence, so you could even report them to the FA or Police.
However, make sure they're not actually authorised dealers with genuine first-sale tickets, as they are allowed (by prior arangement with ebay).

Did you make sure you listed it only for the UK (not just mention as such in the listing)?
If so, either retract the bid stating you specified UK only which is within your rights, or otherwise sell to him. Is it really that much of a problem to ship to Germany so long as he's willing to pay the extra shipping cost, or is it an awkward item?

I've been using PayPal for the past few months, mainly because it is heavily endorsed by eBay, but find their 4% (approx) charges a little steep, especially when the auctions are over £100.
I haven't used any of the other online payment services eg. NoChex or FastPay, but they appear to be a lot cheaper than PayPal.
Which online payment service do people generally recommend? Are there any hidden costs in these, as I am quite famliar with PayPal charges, and can accurately predict them before listing an item on eBay with a buy-it-now option, I would like to be able to do the same with these.

Its an awkward item (camera) and quite costly. I do not want to risk selling it ourside UK, even though this bidder has good feedback I still dont want to sell it outside the UK because I dont accept Paypal any more :(

You'd be within your rights to relist it or offer it to the next highest bidder, so long as the UK only specification was very clear (and preferably it was a UK only auction as well). Offer it to the next highest first as that would mean you're not going to get another set of fees from ebay by relisting.
As for sending... why not use a courier and say to the buyer they have to pay whatever the costs are for that? If you use ParcelForce I think you can send from the Post Office (I know ParcelFarce stink, but they're not so bad for the sender). There are probably some insured options with RoyalMail for European destinations.
You could say you'll accept PayPal with a commission added to cover fees (though normally I don't agree with sellers adding PayPal fees to the final price, especially when I consider it costs me just as much to drive to the nearest bank and park, so why people don't just put the same fee on cheques I don't know... but anyway :oh-hum: ).
Nochex or similar?
Otherwise though, it's offer to the next bidder or relist.
He might "neg" you though, but then you can "neg" him back.

When you list there's a box that says where you want it listed and you have to be careful you select the right bit. It's possible to select several entries I think so it could be you selected UK but it still had another selected.
On the other hand the guy might have deliberately searched the UK site and is trying it on to see if you'll ship anyway.

the plot thickens -
my camera went for a really cheap price to this german and today i found out why - basically some guy who bid on mine tried to up his bid within the last minute for a much better price, but ebay kept crashing on him, - he tried twice on my auction but both times ebay crashed so he bid on someone else's camera instead for a high price and won that.
I know this because he told me just now in an email (i tried making him a second chance offer because I dont want to ship to germany etc etc.)
So.. where do I stand with EBAY on this issue? Can I get my fees back ? because there server crashed my camera went for a
price, and I dont want to sell to anyone outside UK,
PS: this guy says he is happy to act as witness in any dispute with ebay...
I quote this from his email:
I think there was some problem with the Ebay server as far as your auction
was concerned. I bid on several tings last night and all worked fine except
for yours, which wouldn't accept bids.
So do I have a reasonable case against ebay for getting my fees back
:(

Don't think there is. I've got some US$ as well but I'm just going to leave it there as the exchange rate is really bad for a dollar to pound conversion. Conversely this means CDs from US sellers can end up being really cheap so no need to cash out them dollars

You can get the phone number here...
http://cgi3.ebay.co.uk/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?MemberSearchShow
You can only get it for a valid member and auction you've won or sold. There's no guarantee the number is valid or registered.
When you say you've "sold" the item but there's no response from the buyer, I assume you haven't sent the item yet?
If so, refer to point 6 of the faq (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=262301#payment6) on this thread about what to do when there's no response.
Personally I'd ignore the phone option and after the given periods just give him a negative feedback, claim back the fees and move on. You might find he'll respond after a while. Sometimes people forget and some just don't check their email often, whilst others occassionally have a valid reason for a delay.
And always be patient and polite of course :)

questions
1 - what payment options do I have? NO WAY WILL I ACCEPT PAYPAL so thats out of the question :) I want to be paid in UK pounds not Euros.
Can he do a direct bank transfer from his bank to my HSBC account?
Any potential of fraud?
Anyone got any other ideas of the payment type I could accept without being ripped off?
Also, whats the best courier to use for overseas? Parcelforce will cost around 20 quid. Parcelflash seem to be quoting a whopping £150 :suspect:
Also, another auction of mine - the buyer has paid nearly 300 quid all in Postal order money  . Can he reclaim this at all or is this guaranteed mine now? :) The reason I ask is I cant get to the bank until Saturday but can get a friend to post the item out earlier?

Why no PayPal? You can accept a credit card payment then and once the money is with PayPal, that's it, you've got the money.
If fees are a concern just tell him if he wants to use paypal he should add a %age to cover fees.
Safer than a cheque (which can bounce up to 6 months later).
What about Nochex?

New rules with PayPal being under UK law now (for UK accounts) gives you more protection.
Cheques - if they find it's stolen... you lose out ;)
They can bounce up to 6 months later with no protection whatsoever, and cheque guarantees *do not* apply to postal cheques.

Someone paid me with postal orders and I put the postal orders in my account rather than cash them in. Its been nearly a week and it still hasnt cleared yet!!!
I thought PO's were like cash>??? So why are HSBC taking their time in clearing these?

I've never paid postal orders into my account, only swapped for cash at the post office - I'd guess your banks got to present them themselves at the post office, thus adding a clearance time.

Some news on the ebay/PayPal buyer protection...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3518895.stm
just read the link about the ebay/paypal buyer protection, I recently bought an item on ebay fro £39.00 and the buyer sent it recorded post, short story is that it's gone missing I have to give the post office 10 working days before they even search for it.... the seller has a feedback of 334 and about 98% so he's probably use to things going missing and has just said keep him informed.... I've not mentioned getting my money back and thought I'd wait it out, does he have to offer me another item or a refund or can he just offer the standard royal mail refund of about £17.00, he didnt offer postal insurance as an option on the auction... I've only started using ebay and I appreciate that things do go missing in our postal system but this has kind of put me off buying anything else if I end up losing money.
When post goes missing, it is the responsibility of the sender to submit claims, i.e. the seller. He/she will have the paperwork necessary to make the claim - assuming he's a big time seller he'll probably want to maintain a good record and issue a refund, however AFAIK he doesn't have to.
I sent an item recorded once to a buyer, it was returned to me a fortnight later as undelivered, the buyer had given me an incomplete address.
From the FAQ: missing post (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=262301&perpage=20&pagenumber=1#postage4), reclaiming on ebays insurance (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=262301&perpage=20&pagenumber=1#payment12).
ok, tried replacing my pics on ebay, no purchase has been made on a BIN thing so its fine about me amending if needbe
I have managed to amend the picture where u click into the description, but for some reason i cant find how to change the pic next to the description on the front page
hOWEVER when i look at amending it in my ebay it has it down as the gallery pic:suspect:
With Pay Pal, am I still right in thinking that if a unscrupulous buyer uses a stolen card or simply likes to 'try it on', they can get their CC company to issue a chargeback against Pay Pal who intern charges my CC?
With Nochex (Fast Pay?) I know once the money is in my account it's mine. If there are any problems, I can use my Discresccion in regards with refunds and if a stolen card was used, Nochex discretion the cost.
Hiya - I have a quick question for anyone!!
I brought a gameboy off ebay last week for a mate - pretty expensive purchase, but when we received it the unit has no sound at all :( Ive emailed the seller to tell him, but he reckons it was fine when he sent it and that he wont take it back if damaged - but we have not received the fully working item we paid for!
So what can I do? Can I go through ebay or paypal to start claiming money back for this??

Email him again, and tell him you will negative feedback him if this isnt resolved to your satisfaction. Then take it up with Ebay and I think you can claim some money off them.
Hmmm how much can ebay do though? I clicked on some link and it took me to a legal site trying to ask 20 dollars to get started!

I recently purchased an item from ebay the seller is based in China (I know) his feedback was good though, having a check through my ebay today I noticed that his account is Not a registered user now as he has been suspended typically on the day I purchased it.
I have a bad feeling that I may not recieve the item, I will give it a couple of weeks.
Has anyone had this and still recieved the item and whats paypal like at getting a refund if it comes to that?
Stuart.
Hi, i am also having a few problems. Almost 2 weeks ago i bought a sony clie and sent a cheque to the seller who argued a bit about the postage costs. I had mailed him during the auction to find out how much he was charging as it was not stated, he didnt reply until aftet i had won the item them said £8 which i thought was too steep so he agreed to bring it down to £4. Anyway he mailed me to say had received the cheque but another £1.20 was needed for postage. I have been trying to mail him everyday since thursday to get his address as accidently deleted the mail it was on but the mails keep bouncing back ststing he has exceed his mail limit. Not sure what to do now, do you think it seems dodgy and should i cancel the first cheque for £72 or wait a while?? Help please.

What's the sellers feedback like? If it's high I'd give it a few more days but if it's low I'd cancel the cheque and leave him negative as once you'd agreed postage he can't then change his mind.

have a look through your invoice. Its in Preferences - Accounts. Look at the invoice and it should list it there.
I just got an email stating that due to 'unusual activity' my account has been limited until I click a the suppiled link and provide some very sensitive information, such a mothers maiden name and pin number.
The paypal email looks pukka but I'll be damned if I'm going to give that kind of info online.

Ok, just had an email that a buyer is sending me a western union cheque (well, actually I've had an email from western union that they are sending one on his behalf). Never had one before and know nothing about it, so I'm a but unsure about what this involves (and why a UK buyer would want to use this method).
Is it just the same as a regular cheque? Most importantly, can it bounce and should I allow time for it to clear once I pay it into my bank (assuming I can do that)?
Should I be annoyed that he paid this way when my auction stated payment by cheque or bank transfer and he'd already agreed to that (is it really a "cheque")?
Should I stop asking questions? ;)

Hmmmm - I got a little bit of Ebay woe...
I bid on 'Super Troopers' R1. I won the auction and promptly mailed the seller. They didn't get back to me for 5 days or so. Thinking he is never going to reply I buy it in HMV, get home and see he gets to me asking for payment.
I send off a mail explaining that I had made a genuine mistake and don't need the item anymore, I make my apologies and thats that. Then he gets back telling me he has option but to leave negative feedback and complain to Ebay about me.
I mail back to say it's a little harsh but that if he leaves me that feedback then I'll have to Mail Ebay and let them know I mailed him first and he didn't reply to my initial mail. Now he's just mailed me back telling me that I have until tomorrow midnight to pay up or he'll leave feedback with Ebay, get payment for the listing and mail my ISP about my spamming/threatning behavoir.
In reply I sent a copy of my original mail that is still in my sentbox and offered to pay for the listing of the item if he just drops it because there really is no need to keep dragging this out.
In short, if he does report me, is there anything I can do?

I think that maybe you were a bit premature to buy another copy. I don't know what the normal way of treating non-communicating sellers is, but in that situation I would have at least allowed a couple of weeks and sent more than one mail to the guy. An email stating why you'd felt that you'd waited too long and an indication that if you didn't hear within 3 days (say) then you'd be pulling out of the sale would have been fairer, but you'd need to word it carefully and include your reasons for not wanting to wait any longer. A simple "I'm pulling out" email after a short period of silence is one of the worst things you can do to a seller, so I'm not that suprised that you've had a negative reaction from the guy.
I think you're going to have to accept that you've done a bit of a faux-pas here and you will very likely get a neg. The guy's being rather harsh, especially about the spamming (which is, I assume, pants), but if he's angry enough to make threats like that then he's not really someone I'd like to deal with, and probably is not going to handle this rationally unless you can do some real sweet-talking!
Maybe someone else with more ebay experience can shed light on what you can do now, as I'm not sure how you should proceed (other than very carefully!).

Well i don't think you;ve done anything wrong as it's in the Ebay rules that both the seller & buyer should get in cotact within 5 days of the auction closing. I normally leave a few extra days just in caase but don't see why should have to.
I would forward his email to Ebay because he is threatening you with the comment about reporting you to your ISP which is frankly laughable. Sadly I douby Ebay will do anyhting and you'll just have to acceot you will get a neg. Make sure you post a follow comment once you receive it though.

PayPal will allow you open an account using your solo card, and whenever you make a payment in $, they'll charge you at their own exchange rate, which is OK but by no means favourable. On your statement, the payment will appear in £'s billed by PayPal.

OK lets try again.
Under the Items Ive Won, the first line is the auction name
eg 'Virgin SIM'
Right below it , the first column is the auction number! (item#),
End Date, End PRice, My Max Bid, Quantity, Seller, ... etc

I always thought that money had to be added to paypal first, but im now thinking this isnt right as I get an error when trying to 'add funds'
Sorry about the probably really stupid and obvious question, and thanks in advance :)

Just pay the seller using the 'click here to pay by paypal' link you will see when you win the auction.
If you have sufficient funds in your Paypal account you will pay out of that automatically, and any remainder will be taken from the credit or debit card you registered.

It depends what the insurance gets you. International insurances I don't bother with as I don't trust them to work, plus it can mean sending by courier which means a risk of customs charges.
With UK stuff, if someone offers Recorded I don't normally bother as even without Recorded you have insurance up to £27 I think so long as you get proof of purchase.
However, if I'm selling I make Recorded the default shipping method and hike the shipping price accordingly. The main reason is it gives me that extra bit of proof that not only did I send it but someone signed for it, so they can't try pulling a fast one and claim they didn't receive it when they had. It's of less benefit to the buyer I think.
ta, now, im tempted to make a purchase from someone in bulgaria. hes sold a variation of stuff, mainly old shipping equipment, i want to buy a sony camcorder battery. he has 97% feedback, the negs all came at the sametime from 2 people, hes made about 100 sales. do i trust him? it clearly states a sealed sony battery and theres a pic

They don't have to leave feedback and you're not obliged to leave any either.
There's not much you can do other than ask politely. I've got one outstanding that never bothered and it's over the 90 days (or whatever it is) so they can't leave any now :oh-hum:.
Some ebayers buy/sell a heck of a lot though and are busy and tend to forget (it's bad enough getting some people to just answer their emails).

Ive had an email sent to me from ebay saying they cocked up on last months invoice by billing for most things twice. But this has apparently been correctec...
Just thought I'd warn sellers and check your invoice to make sure you havent been billed in error :)
Advice required.
I've had a an auction pulled because it apparently encourages people to violate copyright!
Here's what I had.
This is the Japanese version of Mario Kart 64 it will only work on a Japanese N64 or a modified US N64 (which is what I used). The game MAY work using an adapter on a UK spec machine. Please take this into consideration when buying.
I take it they've taken offence to the bit about running it on a modded N64 or use of a adpter?
If I reword it as such...

Do you think that'll be ok?

why not turn up? Has he got a load of bad feedback recently? sometimes stuff just takes a while and people are away on business/holiday and think they have done their bit by sending the goods. Did they email to say goods on way? Thats always a good sign.

They emailed me to say that the goods were sent, this was about 3 weeks ago. He then said that he was going on holiday.
However, he's listed more items since then, and I've contacted one of the bidders who's said that they've received emails from them, and yet they're not responding to anything I've sent them.

I reckon saying that could risk scaring off those who have modded their machines.
Just say somthing like "This is a standard Japanese cartridge, and will not work on UK or US spec machines." Anybody who has modded their machine should know whether or not it will work on theres as they've already gone to the expense modding it.

Think we need a new question added to the FAQ (been appearing a few times recently):
"How do I add money to my account from my card?"
Seems like Nochex don't offer any protection once payment has been made to the seller.
Dear Dwaine,
We are very sorry to hear of your problems with this person.
Where you dispute a transaction between you and another party, NOCHEX will not enter into any payment disputed by you and any other person other than to confirm that the payment was made in accordance with the instructions you gave to us. We cannot arrange for money to be given back to you where you believe the payment was made incorrectly by you.
We are not responsible for any goods or services paid for by you using the NOCHEX service.
You must understand that we cannot get involved with disputes between buyers and sellers.
As much as we would like to, we cannot disclose any personal details about any of our customers to you without breaking the law - in this case the Data Protection Act. Furthermore, as you will appreciate, it would also contravene our Terms and Conditions.
The exception to this is in connection with investigations by the legal authorities. In these instances, they can file a Data Protection Disclosure form with us. In these circumstances we are legally obliged to supply them with any information they demand.
If you believe this person has acted criminally (deception, fraud or other) then we recommend you report it to the police and ask for their advice. If they want to speak to us then let us know and we will do all we can to co-operate.
If you have any more questions please get in touch.
In fact, on their website, it even promotes 'no chargebacks' - seems like it's every con artists dream!
Once money has been received into your NOCHEX account it cannot be taken back from you (unlike other email payment systems). So you have no need to worry about "fraudulent transactions" being claimed back from you.
Can someone explain the PayPal fees.
I received a payment from someone on Ebay for £11.01 and this was showing up on the transaction part of the main page as normal. However my total balance was showing as £10.44 This means that 57p has gone somewhere, but I don't know where and what for
Anyway I withdrew the £10.44 to my bank account and was charged 25p. I read somewhere it was supposed to be free.
(The Ebayer was based in the UK)
Thanks

Seriously though (and I did quote that out of context :D), these are the fees...

There are two levels of fees, one for Personal Accounts, and one for Premier/Business Accounts.
With a Personal Account, you don't get charged for receiving funds, however this has a restriction in that you cannot accept credit/debit card payments, only PayPal funds, which puts most people off.
With Premier/Business Accounts, you can accept credit/debit cards, but you will be charged a %age fee, plus extra if it's a foreign transaction.
On top of that, changes between currencies incur yet another fee, and withdrawls to your bank another still (except for US banks or UK if over £50. UK withdrawls under £50 cost 25p).
Make sure the bank details are correct as PayPal charge £14 if the withdrawl is returned!!
Some sellers set up two PayPal accounts, one for credit cards and another for PayPal funds and tell buyers to use the PayPal funds address when paying with funds. With a Premier/Business account you still get charged for receiving PayPal funds unfortunately :(
The only way you can use PayPal completely free is to open a Personal Account and send/receive only PayPal funds. Treat the account as a bank and just use the funds to pay for goods, deposit money (which is free) and receive funds from others. Just never withdraw money and it will be free.
Even with my Premier account I never withdraw money, I just keep it there until I want to buy something with PayPal. Unfortunately far too many ebayers charge a stupid (and often inflated) premium "to cover" PayPal fees, which for most low cost items is rediculous. My argument is that it costs a seller at least as much in time, parking and petrol costs to go to a bank and cash a cheque, as it does in PayPal fees, so why discriminate? :oh-hum: (heck it costs me a fortune to cash a cheque due to parking, and it's so much hassle. I much prefer PayPal to receive payments, even with the fees).

Can someone explain the PayPal fees.
Why don't you take a look at the EBay and PayPal FAQ: Does PayPal cost anything? (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=262301&perpage=20&pagenumber=1#payment2)?
Oh hang on, that's this thread! :brickwall :cuckoo:
I'm glad you lot find me so amusing..
I read all that stuff before and it didn't help.
Okay, now I understand why people sometimes say its free. Thanks.
However this does not solve the mystery of why 57p went missing. The Ebayer paid in pounds so it can't be a charge for having paid in a different currency..

yes it does, the 57p is fees, as he paid via a credit card? correct?
Also, if they pay £££££££££ is it not still changed into $$$$ and then changed back, so on a larger transaction you might get fx effects
Okay, havce checked, the fee is 3.4% +20p
So on your 11.02. it would be 37.4P + 20p ie around 57p

Applying the same maths to the amounts you describe above, you'll see the fee works out to 57p on that payment.

I want to buy a dvd from someone in Thailand but it says in the first post that sellers from Asia or Thailand are most likely to be scams. Surely not all are though are they?

Not all, but a vast amount are, especially with DVDs. Watch out for Hong Kong too, especially for GameBoy games (as I discovered, though I'll admit the fakes are very good quality, but they're still fakes) :(. Don't even rely on feedback, the guy I bought from had 100% feedback and loads of it. Probably many people don't realise they're fakes or he's "bought" feedback (or stolen an account), although I notice now the guy has changed to a private feedback.

Is everything protected to up to £120 approx, or do you have to pay for protection?

PayPal protection is sneaky. I think it only applies where the seller's address is confirmed or something (it gave me a warning with one of the people I was buying from), and possibly only if it's a UK seller. I'm not too sure, but check their T&Cs carefully and I wouldn't assume you'll get any protection.
