View Full Version : Double Life of Veronique
For such a well thought of film, I'm surprised this isn't available on DVD.
Does anyone know why it isn't available or any news on it being released sometime soon?
Apparently Artificial Eye are experiencing legal issues with this film but are hoping to release it when it's all sorted out. I can't wait til they do because it's probably my favourite film and my DVD collection isn't complete without it. Also waiting for Naked (Mike Leigh) which is also in limbo :(
Ahhh... thanks for that. I notice Artificial Eye have the video listed, but I couldn't understand why they hadn't released the DVD. Now I know why. :)
Let's hope they get the legal side sorted out soon and the disk released.

The laser disc was Tartan which may be the problem.
I just hpe Artificial Eye win the rights to the DVD! ;)
The weird thing is that it's not available in any other regions either, AFAIK - not in US, Canada, France, Korea or Australia, anyhow. And if there was a release somewhere like Poland you would have expected that to have been spotted by now, by the likes of DVDBeaver.

I haven't seen publication of La Double vie de Véronique (http://boutique.mk2.com/boutique/fiche_video.aspx?id_pdt=676&mId=1235463) mentioned in this forum yet. English subtitles. Available Feb 22. Amazon.fr seems to list it.
And about time too! cheers for that info!

Cool I'll have to pick that up.
BTW it's currently being shown on Sky Cinema this month.
Brilliant! It looks like a very good release with plenty in the way of extra features - will definetly order this :)
At last!! I'll definitely be getting this one. :)
Just a thought though - will the extras have English subs or does this only apply to the main feature? Otherwise I'll have to brush up on my French or wait for a UK release. Then again just to have the film on DVD would be something.
super this was the news I was looking for. can finally retire the vhs copy.

I'd be very surprised if the UK release wasn't released shortly after, so I'll hold out for that.
I never bought the Blue and White movies from Artificial Eye but I bought Red and it was a travesty. The image was so blurry that I could have cried. While the US Miramax DVD isn't perfect it is fairly sharp and presents the color red as red while the Artificial Eye DVD presents red with an almost grey tint.
So I'm not very happy about Artificial Eye releasing it. If the French DVD has subs for the extras as well ( the trilogy DVDs didn't if I remember correctly ) I might get that but I do expect a Miramax release sometime in the future which will have the commentary track by Anette Insdorf.

Artificial Eye release down for 27th April according to MovieMail (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://scripts.affiliatefuture.com/AFClick.asp?affiliateID=17278&merchantID=848&programmeID=2665&mediaID=0&tracking=&url=http://www.moviemail-online.co.uk/films/7068).
And the 24th April according to Play.com (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://playcom.at/thedvdforums?DURL=http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R2&title=880743&p=57&g=72&pa=sr)
It's the 24th - catalogue code is ART321DVD is anyone cares about these things. I presume it's a direct port of the French release given it's 2 disc nature.

It usually is with MK2 stuff.
Is anyone sure about subtitles for the extras? Or just the movie?

Good news, the French DVD has English subtitles for both the film and the extras:
From Disc 1:

and Disc 2:

I got this in the post yesterday. Picture quality is excellent & I can confirm that English subtitles are definitely present and correct on all the extras.
The only slightly annoying thing I note is that an incorrect flag, or whatever you call these things, means that 4:3 material on Disc 2 (and that's most of it) is zooming up to 16:9.
A great-looking release, and it even has a collectable strip of film cels included in the packaging. Not that that's going to do me a lot of good TBH, but it was nice to hold up to the light for about 3 seconds.

I didn't realise that this is now available on the High Street as a UK region 2, 2 disc set. Saw it in Sainsbury's today for £14.99, but can't afford to get it this month :-(
Hope this is of use to someone. I'm not sure if it's 4:3 or 16:9 though.
watched it a month ago.. bit disappointed - not as good as three colors blue or red.
Although its well worth watching for Irène Jacob anyway..
Am I right in thinking that this film has no blue in the colour palette. That might not be the right way to describe it, but I've just watched it on the new DVD and there were reds, greens & yellows - but the blue seemed to be filtered out. I assume this was the intention of Kieslowski and Idziak, the cinematographer.

The Criterion's been announced. I don't know about the MK2 transfer, but the Criterion's been taken directly from the original negative in high-def. It has all the MK2 extras and adds a commentary, two new interviews with the composer and cinematographer and the usual extensive booklet.

Oi, I worked hard to compare the two and figure out what was new you know!!

DVDBeaver describe it as a "golden hue" and it is intentional according to them. I won't link directly as one of the screengrab comparisons shows naked titties and I'm not sure if I can link to such things.
ok, as for the film itself....
ridiculously disappointing. I think all the trois couleurs trilogy are absolutely awesome, whilst this was pretty it was whilst not exactly boring, very pointless and unmoving, like watching swirls of colour.
I really didn't get this film, am I completely alone? Admittedly the trois coloures are the only french films i've really seen and got, perhaps I'm too attuned to having a bit more plot, action, dialogue etc. rather than art itself but I'm amazed by the acclaim for this film, not sure whether to try it agian or cut my losses?
