50-Movie DVD Packs

I don't know whether these have been mentioned before but there are a series of DVD "megapacks" available under the titles Horror, Mystery, and Family. Each contains 12 Region 0 double-sided discs. DVDPacific (http://www.dvdpacific.com) has them at $20.21 plus delivery (search under "50 movie pack"). They are allegedly digitally remastered but at this price who cares? There is also a 100-episode TV megapack.

The Horror Pack sounds irresistable:

Carnival of Souls / Candace Hilligoss Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde / John Barrymore
Atom Age Vampire / Alberto Lupo Blue Beard / John Carradine
Creature from the Haunted Sea / Robert Town The Corpse Vanishes / Bela Lugosi
Nightmare Castle / Barbara Steele Night of the Living Dead / Judith O'Dea
Black Dragons / Bela Lugosi Doomed to Die / Boris Karloff
Invisible Ghosts / Bela Lugosi The Phantom of the Opera / Lon Chaney Sr.
One Body Too Many / Bela Lugosi The Indestructible Man / Lon Chaney Jr
White Zombie / Bela Lugosi The Hunchback of Notre Dame / Lon Chaney Sr
Attack of the Giant Leeches / Ken Clark Nosferatu / Max Schreck
The Screaming Skull / John Hudson Swamp Women / Mike Connors
Beast of the Yucca Flats / Tor Johnson The World Gone Mad / Pat O'Brien
The Terror / Boris Karloff The Little Shop Horrors / Jack Nicholson
Revolt of the Zombies / Dean Jagger Tormented / Richard Carlson
The Giant Gila Monster / Don Sullivan The Monster Walks / Rex Lease
The Fatal Hour / Boris Karloff Monster from a Prehistoric Planet / Tamro Kawaji
Dead Man Walk / George Zucco The Gorilla / The Ritz Brothers

what chance of getting them through customs?

None now that dvdpacific only declare the REAL value now.

EDIT: Ignore that, considering they are less than £11 each they shouldn't have any problems with customs individually.

Only what it says on the covers: Comedy includes some classics like HIS GIRL FRIDAY, MY MAN GODFREY, NOTHING SACRED, and TOPPER RETURNS. Otherwise expect a lot of faded stuff from the 30s, 40s, and 50s.

Action includes KING SOLOMON'S MINES (1950 version?), SANDERS OF THE RIVER, LAST OF THE MOHICANS (1936?), DANGEROUS PASSAGE, and TARZAN'S NEW ADVENTURE (!).

Interesting that Family includes some undisputed silent classics like THE KID, THE GENERAL, and THE BLACK PIRATE, as well as the 1934 JANE EYRE, which I don't recall ever turning up on TV.

I think the original post confused the dollar rrp and the GBP 'members' price.

I think morleyian means £11 (ex. delivery) so it's under the £18 duty free limit.

A bit of a silly question, but does anyone think there is a chance that any of these would be in their original aspect? I'll still be getting at least two of the packs, but it would still be nice as this is probably the only release some will ever get.

Perhaps some in the TV pack... :D

At a guess; you'll probably find it's a mix of +1/3 pan&scan/tv format, +1/3 16:9, and -1/3 (moderate)widescreen. regardless of original aspect. If they're not likely to be anamorphic, they're less likely to be letterboxed, so best pick a pack that doesn't have too many widescreen titles in the first place.

Shipping cost at time of order is only an estimate, they calculate actual shipping cost at time of shipping, so shipping cost will most proberly be around $14 ($1.99 + 12*$0.99) as it's a 12 disc set.

A very good chance I would say as a goodly number of them would have been shot in Academy ratio.

Yes, that's the surface rate. Airmail is another $3. I originally quoted $36.09 for airmail, thinking it was $4.99 + (11 x $0.99) when as you say it is 12 x $0.99. I have amended accordingly.

These are all public domain movies so don't go expecting pristine prints or anything fancy. I liken these things to buying a secondhand paperback, if you like what you see you might upgrade it to a better edition! :)

They don't come in cases as such.. an email I had from the company behind them advises 'The collections are boxed together in a carboard
collection box. The disks are individually teabagged.'

I've had notification that my Family Classics is on its way by surface mail (I'm a patient sort!) at a cost of £13.82 which is under 28p a film. Postage charged at $5.95 (as though 4 discs?)which seems jolly decent. No word yet on my Horror Classics order though.

Just received my Horror Classics pack. There is a big difference in cost between surface and air shipping - surface is $5.95, air $16.86. At surface rate it is still around 30p a film.

Sci-Fi Classics set is now available.

Got sci-fi pack today. Looks great - although the movie - Things to Come - I was hoping that was on it (shown in the preview pick) turns out not to be.

Worth double checking if you are particularly after a movie.

Gone for the horror pack now.

When they say 50 films - Is this 50 separate DVD disks, or are there multiple films on each DVD ?

Can't report on the Horror or Sci-fi ones yet I'm afraid. The Family one is a mixed bag. Some in poor condition, some less so. None I've had a look at so far could be described as pristine so I would take the "digitally remastered" bit with a pinch of salt. But having grown up with poor quality TV prints of old films I'm not too bothered.
