There are actually two different versions of Unreal Tournament 2004, a CDs and a DVD version.
It doesn't state which version it is on the Play.com site, if it was the DVD version I'd get it for sure. I'm far too lazy to be swapping 5 discs around when installing it. :D

Yup, its a 5.5Gb install! :D
Both the DVD and CD versions are £26.99 at Gameplay.
If the DVD version comes with a headset it might go up in price so if you're wanting to pre-order perhaps ?
Personally I'm happy with the cd version for £18, played the demo and onslaught mode rocks !

Thought I would bump this. Play.com now listing BOTH CD and DVD versions at 17.99. Check your orders to see which one you have and cancel it if needed.
Surely this has to be an error in price? Unless of course there are 2 different versions of the DVD set.

Nice spot Samuel - i just ordered the dvd version
dont mind too much since it will be a matter of minutes before a no cd patch hits the servers anyway, but damn fine find none the less :) One order on the way.
note that the blurb @ play does say microphone and headset (not included with game) wrt the DVD version...

Cheers - dvd version 2 me
ordered it as well, already got a headset mike from ebuyer for £10 delivered
Just went to order DVD version, to replace the one I ordered a few days ago.. but that's coming up as the DVD version in my outstanding orders.
So, if anyones ordered before, but wants the CD version rather than the DVD, you'll have to change your order it seems.

My pre-order is now listed as the dvd version so no need for me to change the order. Noticed that the CD version is listed as 6 cds! :D
Thanks to Samuel Downey for posting about the versions, I'd been a bit concerned about having to swap 5 cds during installation, let alone 6, so knowing I'll be getting the dvd version is good.
Cheers - slapped in an order for the DVD version. Should be a nice match for my soon to arrive Radeon 9800 Pro ;)

I gave Atari a ring earlier today. There will be a DVD set and a seperate special edition set that does include the DVD version, metal like case and head set. I am guessing that the version we have ordered with Play.com is the standard DVD edition.

UT2004 UK Rebate Announcement
It's very similar folks -- rest of Europe coming...
ATARI AND EPIC GAMES ANNOUNCE EUROPEAN REBATE PROGRAM, PRICING FOR UNREAL TOURNAMENT 2004
Owners of Unreal Tournament 2003 To Receive £7.50 Rebate on Purchase of New Game; Special Edition Package Includes Headset, Bonus DVD and Metal Box
LONDON – Oct 16, 2003 – Atari and Epic Games have announced pricing and packaging details as well as a rebate program for Unreal® Tournament 2004, the highly anticipated follow-up to last year’s smash hit Unreal® Tournament 2003, which has since become the standard for competitive multiplayer gaming since it shipped in November 2002.
Unreal® Tournament 2004 will ship for Christmas 2003 on PC CD-ROM. The game will include new maps, modes, characters, weapons, technology and a redesigned interface while also including all of the content – including the free downloadable mission packs from Epic and Digital Extremes – from Unreal® Tournament 2003. Unreal® Tournament 2004 will mark the return of the fan-favourite Assault mode, the introduction of vehicles and the all new “Onslaught” mode, a team-based challenge across massive battlefields where players face off in a war to destroy and capture the opposing team’s power nodes.
A Special Edition package will also be available for Christmas. Unreal® Tournament 2004 DVD Special Edition will ship as a double-DVD set – disc one will include all of the game content while disc 2 will include more than 150 hours of Video Training Module (VTMs) from 3D Buzz that will teach fans and amateur mod makers how to use the Unreal Editor to create custom game content. Unreal® Tournament 2004 DVD Special Edition will come in a limited edition metal box and will contain a Logitech Internet Chat Headset for use with the game’s exclusive voice over IP (voice chat) technology, as well as an Unreal window sticker.
REBATE
Owners of Unreal® Tournament 2003 will be entitled to a £7.50 rebate on the purchase of Unreal® Tournament 2004. The rebate will apply to both the standard game and the DVD Special Edition. Owners of Unreal® Tournament 2003 will be required to submit a proof of purchase for Unreal® Tournament 2003 along with a voucher and receipt from Unreal® Tournament 2004 in order to receive the rebate.
“Unreal has always been all about and entirely for the community, and the Unreal® Tournament 2004 packaging options and rebate program is the purest reflection of that attitude,” said Mark Rein, Vice President of Epic Games. “The rebate will allow current fans of Unreal® Tournament 2003 to get this incredible new game for an amazingly low price. We’re thrilled that Atari has gone to such great lengths to reward our existing customers. Unreal® Tournament 2004 DVD Special Edition packs some awesome goodies. With voice chat support, a headset is essential equipment for true fans and the bonus DVD will help mod makers create better and deeper custom creations. With our ‘$1,000,000 NVIDIA Make Something Unreal’ contest underway, you never know where those lessons and your skills can take you!”

Where is the official word on this though? The press release that was pasted simply says "proof of purchase" but mentions nothing about barcodes or receipts.
The rebate sounds like it will be the same as the MS Flightsim series. We will just have to wait for the game to be released to find out for sure.

No, it isn't.
got my order in for the dvd version... all these bargains recently, I really miss food :(
For those wondering whether they will get the Special Edition, as far as I can tell all that is ever mentioned in press releases is a CD version and a Special Edition DVD version.
There is no mention of 2 DVD versions so there is a chance that the DVD version with Play and everyone else is the Special Edition. If you look on DVD Box Office they only have the CD and Special Edition DVD version on sale, no other DVD version.
Some companies don't mention it as there is only one DVD version and so don't need to call it a special edition. It is a special edition compared to the CD version as there are extras.
The one available on Amazon.co.uk says its 2 DVD's with the same RRP as the one Play are selling.
Steven Lewis
09-03-2004, 12:20
I really can't see Play selling the special edition version with metal tin, headset, window sticker and two DVD's for £17.99. If they are that truly is a bargain.
MetalGearAl
09-03-2004, 12:21
Well, the special edition is meant to come with a headset, and the Play website says:
"..using a microphone and headset (not included with game)"
Also the Amazon.co.uk Feature listings are a bit shoddy at best:
"Features: DVD version - on 2 DVDs"
I know that says 2 DVDs but the way's displayed I really don't think it's a trustworthy source at all.
Many UK people on the official UT forums have discussed this exact issue on this thread - http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=347211&perpage=30&highlight=special%20edition&pagenumber=1
And Atari replied with:
Hey everyone, I dropped in so I can help to end the confusion. So with no further ado, here's the situation. Currently there are going to be 3 versions of the game available (more or less), please let me explain.
1) 6CD version (main version for North America, rest of the world, Asia, and some parts of Europe)
2) DVD (Main version for Europe, Germany will be DVD only, not North America)
3) DVD Special Edition (w/bonus DVD and a headset, this should be available pretty much everywhere but in LIMITED QUANTITIES. I cannot discuss the amount we are creating so please don't ask)
I hope that clears thing up.
Also, we aren't kidding about the limited quantities, it's a special thing we put together for you folks, the hardcore Unreal fans. To ensure you get a Special Edition version, I would suggest that you pre-order at your local retailer, you know you are going to buy it, so might as well pre-order.
So to squash the confusion, there are 3 versions (6CD, DVD, and DVD SE), all 3 may or may not be available where you live, because that depends on where you live and your local retailers not Atari. And finally, Special Edition is ONLY available on PC-DVD in limited quatities.
I hope that helped.
-Gangrel
Now it is also been said that the only supplier to receive the SE edition from Atari UK will be Gamestation, at the low low price of £49.99! That's nice isn't it, when the US get it for $39.99...
http://www.gsserver.co.uk/site/shop/products/3546430112021/
Jeepers at the current exchange rate thats more than double the price.
Anyway gone for the play bargain, thanks for the heads up.
Off the top of anyones head, whats the release date?
MrLondon
09-03-2004, 15:04
15.03.2004 supposed to be release date for US.
There was a press release from Epic a few days ago when it 'went gold', and that said the release date was the 15th worldwide... although Play still say the 19th.
mikegray
09-03-2004, 15:33
19th is correct for the UK. 15th is the US and "worldwide" of which we apparently not a part!

Why didn't you use DVDBoxOffice or Importmadness? Both less than the ridiculous £50 UK price tag!
http://www.importmadness.com/cgi-bin/prod?Item_Number=131031 - £36.98
Even if you take into account that you won't get your £7.50 rebate from UT2003 because you'll have the US coupon instead of the UK one, it's *still* cheaper!

If you think 50 quid for the retail edition is a rip off, you will think it is even more of a rip off when you find that some retailers in the US, such as Frys are selling UT2004 special edition for under 30 bucks! (which is roughly 17 quid!)

Ooh nasty things these debit cards are. Downloaded the demo last night and ordered the game tonight off play.
Mmmmmm, it looks like the CD version status has been updated to state they are out of stock. Me wonders whether the DVD version will soon do the same, considering the volumes of orders they must of received. Anyone have any guesses how long some of us are going to have to wait to receive this game. Going to be very tempting if it is going to be hold for a while to pay the little extra and get it from elsewhere!
DVD version now down as out of stock, should hopefully mean it will be on its way soon.

Time to cross our fingers!
Ordered mine from Play - anyone know what they are like at delivering games on the day of release?
First time I have ordered a game off them but my friend ordered a PS2 game and got it two days before the release date:)
I've been playing the demo since yesterday. Seems a pretty good game. However, I do get occasional faults from the game so it crashes out, the PC is still ok though. Do others get this or am I looking at a memory, graphics card driver etc etc elimination process. I using an ATI9800 se AIW and mid Dec drivers.

Anyone else order the special edition from gamestation? I know I'm probably the only fool here to do so but my order status for some reason shows two orders for the £50 beastie, one with the status "Pre-order" and the other with the status "Payment Failed". Just wondered if this is this normal as I haven't ordered from gamestation before. Thanks.

They have a shortage of stock, it maybe arriving today or Monday, offered to cancel the order so I could buy it locally, this wasn't an option as Game are selling it for £34.99!!!!
I'll wait knowing that I will get it and in the meantime my money is still in my account.

you can still order it from like Amazon, Game.uk.com or gameplay.com for £25ish and they should get it to you by next day.

Annoying isn't it, we can get illegal copies but not legit ones! Why don't they realise staggered release dates increase piracy?
mikegray

Review copies, promo copies, factories pressing the discs and stores. All of these *have* to be with people before the release date, with a big release like this and Far Cry, it's inevitable that it will leak before street date, especially as they use generic protection which crackers can presumably remove with their eyes shut now. Unless they use Starforce (is that the name?) which never seems to surface before street date.
MetalGearAl
18-03-2004, 14:46
I'm not sure if Far Cry is out in the US yet, it might be. If so then both of these were only 'released' on the net at most a day before the street date anyway.

so whats on the 2nd DVD at Amazon?
The limited edition 2 DVD version of Unreal Tournament 2004 (as opposed to the 5 or 6 CD version) will ship with a headset that can be used for in-game, real time communication. The second DVD in the case will contain 15 hours of video tutorials for UnrealEd, the editing program released for the Unreal series. The DVD version will be supplied in a metal case (ala Return to Castle Wolfenstein perhaps?). The set will be available in the US and in Europe, and both the CD and DVD versions are currently scheduled for the same release date. Let's hope that the game is released in time for the Christmas period! --This text refers to an alternate edition.

Bits and bobs but it won't have the headset - 99% of retailers in the UK are only selling the CD version and the standard DVD version. They ain't selling the SE version and that is a fact I'm afraid :(
My order now says awaiting stock. :( I ordered it on 28th Feb you would think they would have ordered enough stock in for all those who ordered it well in advance.
Changed my order for Far Cry from Play to Blackstar as Blackstar have always managed to send the items in time for the release day.
The 2 disc one is a bit gimmicky anyway.......unless you're at a lan party, you're unlikely to be sitting there alone shouting orders to team mates elsewhere in the world who you don't know into a headset.......can't see myself watching 15 hours of crud either, and a metal box isn't really practical for a shelf.
All I want is the game, and if need be, I could always buy a headset if I'm that desperate - can't see it being fantastic quality anyway.

Ordered Feb 11th and still awaiting stock. Last pre-order they get of mine. Funny that all the shops near me have stock though.
Still, I don't care. My bro is picking it up today for himself, I'll just copy that until the original arrives. Plenty of serial nums available already too, almost makes you wonder why we bother paying for them. Is it still piracy if you've bought a copy, but it hasn't arrived?
Anyone know if uninstalling removes the serial num from the registry? Obviously I want to use my real copy when I get it, but for this weekends LAN party it won't be here.

It is not encrypted in your registry. In fact even a malicious web script could be able to access it. Also I've read they're easily hidden in applications, so be careful what you download. I read a quote that someone is planning to keep a database of UT2k4 stolen keys for people to use, so be wary.
Mind you, the applications that those scripts will be hidden inside will be things like Aimbots and cheating software for UT2k4, and people who use those deserve everything they get.
There is an app, there's a link on the official UT forum, for a small piece of software that someone wrote that keys your key encrypted, and decrypts it ecah time you run UT. It does mean you have to enter a password each time to play UT, but it's a bit more secure than nothing at all (Obviously not 100% secure still though).

So cheaters lose the ability to play? I like it!
Key stealing sucks. My flatmate can't play half life at the min because some bugger already has his key in use (new copy). Now he has to prove he paid for it, and can't use it til he does.

Why haven't you cancelled your order and paid £34.99 for it down your high street then if you are that disappointed then..? Vote with your feet if you feel that strongly about it.
Sure, you can argue that retailers should provide a high standard of service whatever price you pay, but for the money I'm saving I'm prepared to wait a few extra days for my copy that I've ordered from them. It's not as if it is a life or death situation, although some of the reactions/comments that I've seen from members over the years suggests that they have very little else to concern themselves with.
Has anyone contacted Watchdog yet incidentally?

Splobber - I think the fact is that play.com should have informed its customers before now to say they didn't have enough stock - so people could choose whether say they wanted to pay more and go with amazon etc. They must have known in advance they hadn't enough stock.
For instance - Blackstar - are now saying that any pre-orders after yesterday for Far Cry will not be dispatched on the release date.
If Blackstar can do it - why can't play - answer because they didn't want to loose their orders.

I can appreciate people wanting to play games on their release date, but there's nothing stopping them from cancelling their order still and going down to GAME and paying twice the price for it. Most won't though purely because it is cheap, even though the ranting will start if the postie doesn't get it to them by tomorrow morning.
I won't be losing any sleep if Play didn't order enough stock - at £17.99 they can send me it a week later and I'll still be happy in the knowledge that the money I've saved will almost pay for Splinter Cell 2 (which is currently doing the rounds for £17.99)

What I meant slobber was that if play had announced say earlier in the week that they would only have enough stock for say pre-orders up to start of Feb then they would have lost pre-orders I'm sure. Blackstar tell you in advance - then yourself as the consumer have the choice of the cheaper price and wait or pay more and get sooner.
I myself would have instead gone to Amazon (like I've done with Battlefield Vietnam) at 25 pounds - paying only an extra 7 pounds.
I'm not going to loose any sleep over UT2004 - I'm in no rush for it - just hope they don't do this with all their pre-orers - for instance Far Cry later in the month/

I know what you meant, but to see people complaining about the wait yet are still prepared to give the retailer the business is what I'm talking about.
It's similar to the Splash scenario - members moaned about them something chronic and vowed that they would never order from them again, yet the minute a cheap price reared it's head they would order again and end up moaning a little bit more.
Members can still cancel their order from Play and go to Amazon, Blackstar, GAME, wherever really. A shiny £1 coin says that most won't though purely because of the price point. That is why I'm prepared to wait. For people to complain about it even though they still can cancel their order and get a copy elsewhere today (for more money) is pointless.

Well, I've cancelled my order with Play and got it from Game who price matched the Software shop at 29.49.
As Play don't appear to have had any stock of the DVD version it would be mid next week at least before I would have had it from them. They also sent me the wrong DVD-Audio disk last week, so I'm not having a good time with them at the moment!
As an aside, the voucher in the box to claim the 7.50 if you have UT2003 says that you have to send a copy of the receipt for UT2004 and the Blue Play Disk One of UT2003 back to them. Also only one rebate per address / household.

I took the whole day off work (unpaid) to wait in for the delivery today and bought a six pack of Curly Wurly's and a dozen Pot Noodles for the nights gaming which will go well into the small hours. got mine delivered this morning 6CD version
There's a coupon enclosed with details of the rebate too!
1) Complete the coupon
2) Enclose a clean, clear copy of the original receipt for UT2004, dated between March 19th 2004 and May 19th 2004, please circle 2004 on the receipt with a black or blue pen.
3) Enclose Disc One (Blue play disc) of UT2003
Which knackers my plans to get the rebate and then sell UT2003 as the boxset will become void once the Disc 1 is gone.
£7.50 is still great, totalling £10.50 for UT2004!
Now to install it.

I wasn't disagreeing, just trying to work out their strange logic.
It's a shame I was going to buy a copy on EBay for £10, cut out the barcode, sell it and get the cashback.
Oh well lol :)

I was thinking they'd have you send the CD Key or something. Bit mad to have to send your play disc.

Have you ever considered a career in videogame reviewing? You'd knock 'em bandy. :D

Oh, I've toyed with the idea on occaision, do you think I could carve a career for myself from it?
I might actually get to play the game sometime too, then I'd have something useful to say about it.

Played this for most of the weekend at a get together, and it rocks! Unfortunately only 5 out of 16 people got their copies on time though, so the rest of us are stuck with one player til we get our valid CD Keys. I'm gonn see how much time I have free this week, and if I have an evening spare I'm just gonna go buy this from town and cancel with Play.
Excuse my ignorance, but is there any benefit in getting the DVD version over the CD version (apart from the obvious fact you don't need to keep swapping discs on install)?
Lagerlout
22-03-2004, 10:41
Well the DVD version actually just contains 6 folders marked CD1-CD6 and an install file! It IS the CD version, just on one DVD.
The DVD version is now showing as back in back stock at Play and mine is now processing

Does it go straight to dispatch after Processing?

I think it's:
Processing - Got the order and just waiting for somebody to take a look at it.
Packing - Someone is shuffling around finding the DVD to put in an envelope. Then left sat by the door ready to be posted when someone fancies going to the shops :)
Dispatched - On it's way!

Just to add to this. I actually *DID* cancel my UT2004 DVD last wednesaday and I have also got a £2 coupon. So it seems like anyone who ordered will get one..
Now do I use the £2 to replace the order :)
A big  to everybody who cancelled :norty: because they were slighlty delayed, its only a game and not the end of the world because we didnt get to play it on the release day. Cant beat that price with the rebate.
Now to search for the old game so I can get my money back
DAM :oh-hum: just read the post above
I hope you're all taking back your letters to Watchdog/Trading Standards/Amnesty International. :nono:

TBH, I cancelled the order last week after actually playing it multiplayer online and realising that like the UTs before it *I* wouldn't be playing it online after a couple weeks.
So the £2 coupon is a nice bonus ;)

Hm.. did you have to email Play to complain about the delay to get the voucher? I've happily get my order for almost a month now, but I didn't receive an email.
No, for me and 4/5 mates I know play just automatically sent the mails. Id imagine you may get it later as I would guess that play had an awfully large number of pre-orders for this so will have a lot of coupons to mail out :)
Beats me why they sent the coupon out. Only ordered on Thursday knowing it wasn't in stock, and was in no rush.
Whether or not I choose to use it, I don't know yet, as not really fairly earnt in this case and it will be taking money out of their pockets for no fault of their own.
