Good offer for the inclusive minutes but shame about the phone itself and the 3 customer service.

jlgmax

At least the A835 is meant to be the best of the current 3 handsets so this offer aint that bad.....!

If it wasnt for the fact that the NEC 616 and (hopefully) the SE Z1010 are coming out next month Id probably go for this myself !

The Link are offering the NEC e808y for free on the same line rental on the 3G network.

Not sure which is the better phone.

From what Im reading the A835 is the best 3G handset currently available.....

In fact, for £12.50 a month its a steal ! I think Ive just about talked myself into getting one - just trying to find out if "3" still offer the 14 day money back guarantee (just in case the reception in my area is a bit poor !)

racingclub

yes - 3 still do the 14 day money back guarantee

How long is the contract for on 3 phones?

jlgmax
21-02-2004, 18:25
12 months. Therefore the total price for phone and 6000 anytime minutes = £150

Does anyone know whether I can sign up on "3" and put the sim card in my nokia 6310i (As I have a fully fitted hands free car kit for this phone).

Would it work on the 2G type reception?

simon_hzero
21-02-2004, 21:55
Nope, you will find it increasingly difficult to use the 3 USIM card in a 2G phone.

3 is cracking down on users who do this as it costs them money for people to roam on the O2 network.

Rigpig
21-02-2004, 22:29
I've been with 3 for since July 2003 and the network has got better and better all the time. They deserve more people signing up as they are offering a radically better deal than anyone else.

Regards, Rigpig.

Looks like an excellent offer, is the phone still locked to Three's naff home page? I have the 808 and it's really annoying as you can't upload Java apps or go to any website apart from three's :(

jlgmax
21-02-2004, 22:48
Think the "walled garden" still applies ie no real web access (which is a pain cos you cant check your non-3 pop3 email like you can on almost every other half decent 2g phone !)

bugger, thought so, a quick search brought up www.3g.co.uk and on their forums they have a post on how to upload Java apps to the A385 via some kind of hack. Not sure how many decent apps work though !

I popped into the link today to have a gander at this and thought it was entirely reasonable. Looked about the size of a Nokia 5110 (my first mobile :sniff: ) and not particulalrly heavy either. I do like the A920 though (PDA one) don't suppose anyone has seen the 12 month offer on that one instead have they?

Or is the A835 better in someway?

AudioVisualGuy
23-02-2004, 13:31
I caved, even though I posted the bargain I wasn't sure if I needed it or not. the 8 hours and 20 mins free per month pushed me over the edge.

jlgmax
23-02-2004, 13:47
OK just back from town - had a good look at and play with the A835 in the 3 store. First impressions:

POSITIVE
- Screen kicks the T610's ass
- Keys are very nice indeed. Nice and responsive.
- Camera quality is good - again, better than T610
- Loud Polyphonic ringtones

NEGATIVE
- Texting seems quite awkward - very different to Nokia & Sony
- Its a lot larger than any 2G phone Ive ever used.....

There were 3 customers asking for PAYG A835s whilst I was in the store so its generating lots of interest by the look of things.

I then went over to The Link and I cant believe this deal:

FREE A835
£100 CASHBACK AFTER 6 MONTHS
£50 (!) TRADE IN FOR ANY WORKING PHONE WITH CHARGER

IE:

3 months @ £12.50 = £37.50
9 months @ £25.00 = £225.00
Total Charges = £262.50

Minus:

Cashback £100
Trade In £50

Total Charge for year = £112.50 (or £9.38 a month !)

This compares to £150 yearly charge under the £12.50 a month deal.

joker3001
23-02-2004, 15:01
ah but if u don't want to trade in your old phone .. its still 162.50

Trium Mars that is an ancient phone. What I'm doing to having the 12 months contract for calls on seperate network and using my o2 online contract for o2 calls and txt messenging.

Has anyone got their despatch email yet who ordered today ?

Given it a go even though I upgraded on Orange another phone won't hurt as I can use this for all other calls.

Now the only thing is to fax over all that stuff so I can send it to my dad's workplace.

Also found out if anyone is wondering that after the 4th month they will automatically send you out a cheque for remain 9 months @ 1/2 price.

Now all I need to do is get a bluetooth headset that will work for this and the my new panasonic x70 and I will be fine

By the way - do buymobiles.net simply credit £112.50 to your '3' account (9 months at 12.50 a month discount) or do thye give you this as a cheque, or do '3' actually just bill you at £12.50 for 12 months ?

Yes they do - just rang to check.

Well - Im afraid I just cant bring myself to do it !!!

Ive just come back from CPW and the Nokia 7600 just looks and feels so much more modern than the A835 !

I figure theres only £150 difference over the year (9 x £12.50) and after 6 months I can drop to £15 a month and sell the phone on Ebay anyway !!

I just really cant see myself taking the A835 out round town with me - especially at night, its just (unfortunately) too large !

No video calling on the 7600 but since I dont ever plan to use that feature I dont think it matter much !

if you mean your mins, then dial '333' then 1,2,1 for remaining talk time. It is real time I have been advised so that the time you hear is the time exactly left.

Quick warning if you have any problems with your phone.

Just checked my phone today and the blue background has changed. spoke to 3 quickly as i could not figure how it changed or how to change it back. was told that this has been happening a lot with this phone and that it was a software problem. They advised to get it exchanged before 28 days from the dealer otherwise if they had to supply a replacement one itt would be a refurb.

Have spoken to buyingmobilephones and they offer a pick up and deliver service.

Applied for this offer a few days ago and was accepted, but they asked me to fax over some proof of id.

I don't have a fax machine so didn't bother and forgot about it.

Until today.............when i recieved a phone call from them asking if i still wanted it - i explained i didn't have a fax machine so didn't bother.

The lady on the phone said no problem and is sending me the phone anyway - delivery on Tuesday.

Er, isn't that for the Motorola E365? The A835 definitely has Bluetooth and IR.

For anyone who has been put off by 3's bad press, don't be!

I've had an Nec e606 since last August and I've used it all over the country with very few problems. Yes I've had dropped calls (who hasn't) but it's not been a big problem. I've phoned the support team twice and got through to someone in a relativly short time and had my problem dealt with quickly.

My only real moan is that I now need Bluetooth and although the e606 is supposed to support it for data only it doesn't seem to have it at all even though it appears on the menu's.

Might have to go for one of these A835 deals now though and give the e606 to the wife :-)

Rigpig

P.S. the 3 network is improving all the time and although in my case I seem to be in a 2g area more than 3g I'm sure that more 3g areas are coming online all the time. I bought the phone for the inclusive minutes at a great price anyway so the 3g stuff doesn't really bother me.

A question - as it is possible to move to a different tariff with 3, do you think it will be possible to move to the Video Talk 100 tariff (£15pm) after three months? This means that you get a cheque for £112.50 (£12.50 x 9 months) and then pay only £135 for the remainder of the year (£15 x 9 months)???

kokee2000

I was hyped to get this phone until I realised that there is no mmc card slot - its in the phone (need to do some unscrewing to get to), and apparently games you dload cost 50p but only last for 3 days.
Then I saw the a925, nice phone with symbian - really would like that, but no comparable deal to this :( (only 3 months 1/2 price l.rental)

I would be interested to see if i can somehow dialup a local isp. i know they state 0870 and 0844 numbers do not count as free mins. So thats most ISPS out the window. But if you can find an isp with a local prefix. 0116 for example if you would be able to dialup to the internet using your free minutes. I'll have a play :) when i get the fone tomorrow :)

Had mine 2 weeks now. Some very annoying "bugs" (like - no proper alarm functions, inbox wont display texts by sender name even if option is set to do this) but overall a good phone. Texting takes some getting used to, not as intuitive as Nokia/Sony Ericsson but for £12.50 a month for 500 xnet mins its unbeatable value..... Id feel VERY restricted going back to my old T Mobile off peak contract now.

Plus - free "WAP" access for news, sport etc !

@ Jush - I was travelling back from Blackpool today (had full 3G signal all the way back to Leeds by the way) and I rang 3 customer services to enquire how much the text/images only links from "3 Today" were (after Id been browsing them for about 20 minutes lol !). I was advised by 3 CS that I would ONLY incur charges for video downloads and that text/graphics-only links (eg News, Sport, National Lottery content) were all free..... So allthough its not "full" WAP (we all know about the "walled garden" limitations) it seems OK for free........

When you say no proper alarm functions, does it mean you can't use it as an alarm clock? My nokia is responsible for waking me up everyday, and I need any new phone to be able to do the same!! :D

Read two posts up.......

Re: Alarm - no dedicated Alarm function. Have to set a "recurring event" in calendar and call it "Alarm". Therefore its not as flexible as usual alarm functions on mobiles (no snooze, not as easily changed, cant set to exact time - reminder alarm is 5 mins before the time you set etc etc).

Have I worked it out correctly with the Link offer ? .....

1st 3 months half price i.e. £12:50 with the £100 cash back, the next 9 months cost £25*9 - £100 =£13.88 a month for the 500 minutes package ?

cheers guys, really like the look of this deal.

(I won't be exchanging a phone in the deal)

Cheaper with Buymobiles.net. Their Customer Service is also excellent. I am on my 3rd A835 (1st one had a dodgy joystick, 2nd one came out of box and was scratched in transit, 3rd one is OK !!). Each time they have quickly and effeciently replaced the handset. Only £12.50 a month on their deal too......

Cheers mate, are they quick on sending out the phone ? I don't have any ID on me today and wondered if this was a necessity with them.

jlgmax

Need to email/fax/post ID to them. They despatch same day if you email it over to them and call them to let them know you've sent it.

You will need ID for any mobile contract anyway.....this deal runs until 31st March I think.

I went with A1comms.com in the end - phoned them, good attitude on the phone. As it happens they look like the same company if you take a look at the website!

They required ID proof over the phone but ordering online you do not need proof. Hope to have the phone tomorrow. Any suggestions on a decent bluetooth headset to go with it ?!!

My A835 will not display the contents of my Text Message Inbox by sender name no matter how many times I set the option in the "setup" sub-menu of the Inbox !! (Mentioned on here previosuly I believe !)

'3' Technical Support claim that they have not heard of this problem before and have suggested that I take the handset in to have the software re-flashed !

Has anyone who has an A835 managed to get it to display the Inbox contents by sender name, rather than displaying the first few words of the actual text ?!

When they claim the line rental is £12.50 is that with/without vat and do you get charged for itemised billing ?

jlgmax

With VAT. No charge for itemised billing.

On another note - whos got an A835 and fancies trying out the video calling ??!!

JedMc

That's interesting ! as I have been charged for itemised billing ?
Also I have just received my first bill, and it states........
"Half price line rental discount applies to your first 3 full months"
I thought it was supposed to be 12 ?

I may be reading this all wrong, or I have missed something.

3 months discount from the network. 9 months @ £12.50 a month chequeback from the dealer (if its buymobilephones.net / al comms).

Itemised billing is shown as a debit then a credit for the same amount on your bill. (this is all explained in the "your bill explained" leaflet enclosed with your bill).

seems tempting but has anyone gone for the Nec616 model or know if this model is any good???

jlgmax

Shorter battery life - same "iffy" network coverage !

Id advise the A835 @ £12.50 every time - less finanical committment to a contract than the 616 (lets face it - all the other networks are gonna have their 3G services running within 12 months...!)

anyone know what network 3G uses in the USA? It says its triband so I know it will work, just curious as to which network.

Anybody know if you get charged buy 02 when you roam ?
I have heard that when no signal is available with 3, the network roams to 02 where you get charged 50 pence per minute.
Any ideas.

You still get your inclusive minutes allowance whilst roaming on O2 due to inadequate 3G coverage, and only get charged 15p/min if you make any further calls after using that up.

Has anyone had their cashback yet from this deal ?

Do we have to contact buymobilephones.net or do we just automatically get sent the cheque after our 3rd month has been billed ??

Cheers !

I just called Buymobilephones.net and you have to send them off a copy of your 4th bill (the one that is now 25£) Then they will send you a cheque.. Im gonna send mine off today. Hopefully when i get the cheque back i will down grade to a lower contract. like 15 pm. :)

Gonzarlis,
When you say downgrade, are we able to go to a lower tarriff and still claim £12.50 from BuyMobiles.net ?

I am currently in a state of confusion, this damn phone has caused me nothing but hassle, but I don't know who to contact first, I cant keep a conversation for more than 5 minutes without the connection dropping.
Anybody know what the penalty for jumping out early is ?

I strongly suggest that you head over to the 3G Forum at www.3g.co.uk and reflash the firmware on your A835 to enable you to "lock onto" the 2.5G backup network from o2. I did this about 2 months ago and since then I have not suffered a single dropped call......

Yeah shag mate. I sent my fourth bill off to them a while ago. Heard nothing for quite a while also. Got in touch with them about 3 days ago and I got the cheque through the post this morning a nice 112.50 into my bank :). They were helpful when i called and it seems to have done the trick also :)

"reflash" .. does this get round the ringfenced browser aswell?
