Looking through the bargain section in my local HMV I was brought up short by an Elstree Hills (Pickwick) budget version of Rashomon. At only £4.99 I had to pick it up and assess its quality. Seems to be an American release of the picture as the opening title says "R.K.O. Presents" and most of the titles are in English.

The film is presented in its proper academy ratio and has player generated subs. The packaging says you can turn off the subtitles but I couldn't do this on my machine. The print looks OK if a little smeary with some ghost trails. For a fiver it's not a bad purchase but you may have to go to HMV for this as I cannot find it online at all.

Great find, but this isn't really a film to over-economise on!

The superb Criterion release can be had for about £16.50 on DVD Pacific at the moment - includes an enormous booklet, amongst other things.

We should really be in the bargain forum... :|

Yes...should go to Bargain forum. BTW it is only £3 in FOPP in Bath!

I thought about putting this in Bargain Forum but as £4.99 was the normal retail price-it didn't seem to be a bargain! :)

I agree Criterion is the way to go but this version may be useful for people who have never seen the film before.

It's £2.97 in Music Zone. I gave it a miss as I wasn't sure of the qulaity.

I got one for £2.97 in Music Zone. Never seen the movie, so worth a go I thought.

Never seen this either, but am very interested. Is the Criterion really worth paying the extra? I am very tempted to get it....
