I'm thinking of buying the R2 and would be interested to hear from anyone who has purchased the disc. I know all releases of Chou Chou are a bit naff but I really like Shunji Iwai's work so providing it's uncut, widescreen, with Japanese audio, and a watchable transfer I'll do me for now.

well the R3 was good enough for me but as long as the image problems aren't too obvious i'm not bothered (note that a song by Lily Chou Chou was on the Kill bill 1 soundtrack, though not I don't think, the cd)

The R3 is supposed to have poor contrast problems though right?

Anyone know anything about this apparently new HK edition on pre-order at Korean DVDs (http://www.koreandvds.com/dvddetail.html?id=16358)? No details but released on the 22nd June.

That Panorama disc is the disc I have and therefore the image is not anamorphic and has an inferior picture compared to the other R2 disc.

The Panorama disc is more than acceptable though and is cheapish although Jimmyboy has problems with Panorama discs so I would avoid it for now.

Another thing about the movie itself its nothing like April or love story (two mega favourites of mine) so don't expect it to be I much prefer his previous romances than this hard/MTV/cynical look at teenage life ... its still good though.

Thanks, Cirrus - so it's not actually a new version then? Boo...

I thought the panorama disc was ANAMORPHIC!?

That's what I thought too. :?:

Could maybe someone confirm this? The Japanese DVD is very expensive and hard to find, so I'd like to order the Panorama, but not if the image isn't anamorphic.

I should recieve my panorama disc in a day or two, so I'll confirm whether it is or not. :)

Great!

Also, shouldn't this thread be in the World Cinema section? (EDIT: That was fast. :))

The Panorma DVD is anamorphic, but has been criticized for the colors being too dull. Here are some screengrabs from my Panorama DVD I posted recently at Bullets:

Those are not the colours I saw at the cinema.
It being dull compared to the cinema experience is not an overstatement.

Well a DVD screenshot on your monitor always looks different than when you play the DVD on your TV of course, but still... hm... tough call. The Japenese DVD is still available at YesAsia, but is just so expensive.

In another (old) thread I read someting about Criterion planning to release this movie. Was that not true? I can't find any info about it on the Criterion site.

If you go to the Criterion forums (http://www.criterionforum.org/forum/) and look for the rumours and speculation thread you will find it listed there...

...Edit: Although I can't find it since they moved their site

It's been rumoured to be a possible Criterion release for ages now, IIRC because one of Criterion's sister companies have the theatrical rights to the movie in the US. I think it's looking more likely that it will end up being released by HVE if it ever gets a DVD release in the US now (which is no bad thing).

Right, so I've been in doubt for weeks now, about whether to get the Jpn R2 release or not, only to find out that it doesn't have English subtitles. Maybe I should have checked that first.

Oh well, at least I found out before buying it. I'll just wait for another release for a while or get the HK version if it takes too long.

Hey Geert, I finally watched the film last night and thought it was real good. The dvd seemed decent enough imo. Maybe one to upgrade if a better release comes out though as I liked it so much.

Good to hear, megatron. When I have money again I'll go for the HK release too.

Well, it would seem that the call that Home Vision Entertainment would be releasing a R1 version of this is accurate...

Anamorphic transfer and a making-of documentary... sounds lovely. Was thinking of getting the R2, but I'll wait until February now to see how this new release turns out. Praying they don't screw up the transfer...

Great news, Aretak - I've been holding off from getting this and will be pick the HVe one up once some comparative reviews come up (and assuming they don't screw up)

It's released on February 15th. The same date as R1 Taegukgi and R1 Last Life in the Universe (which is rumoured to contain the BEST extra in the universe! a commentary by the God of cinematography. Christopher Doyle!)

I will be spending a lot of money on this day.

:)
