View Full Version : Super Monkey Ball 2
havent been using my GC much so I decided to part-ex 4 games for Mario Kart and Super Monkey Ball 2. Does anyone else hate this game?
It plays like Marble Madness and even a 5 y/o would find these cutscenes childish. Who finds it funny using the word poo repeatedly in a cutscene? :oh-hum:
My brother is going to kill me when he finds out what I swapped two of his games for.
Are you on cra....never mind :D
It is one of the best games I've played in AGES!

is it true in single player SMB2 relies more on luck than skill in some of the levels ?
Weren't you the bloke who reckoned the last Tomb Raider game was great? :suspect:

Yup - the single player game isn't as well designed as the first game, but the multi-player is top notch.

single player is great fun. the cut scenes are poo tho.
it gets silly hard later on in 1player.
stick with it, honest.

Oh, and they dropped/ruined two of two best things about the first game...
- The multi-player race version of the main game.
- Monkey Fight, where they ruined the simplicity.
It's good as a companion piece to the first game, which also had a much better one player mode.
This must be one of the games that I have sworn at the most, some of the levels just looking at them make me go ahhhhhhhhhhh, it was a great day when I completed it in one player mode.
As someone says earlier some of the levels do seem have a lot involved in the way you manage to complete them, but others require a great deal of skill, I really liked the level 8 rings <it might be called something similar> as you can get a good rhythm going.
Sometimes I questioned whether this came was fun, but stick with it cause it, because it is. And it is great in multiplayer.
I found the levels harder around the worlds 6 to 7 mark, and I thought they got genuinely easier after this point. But maybe this was I was becoming more experienced at the game.

I haven't played SMB2 yet but if it's anything like SMB1 then you are on crack. One of the best games I've played in years and still sadly under-rated

Yes. Marble Madness is rubbish and I care about cutscenes because even if a game isn't upto scratch a good story can keep me playing (Getaway, Ghosthunter) watching this pitiful kiddy garbage doesn't.
I tried to play it more but was completly unimpressed, my brother felt the same so I got an earful for choosing it. :D

well prehaps u should shove it in the classfieds. there are enough peeps on here that would be interested im sure.
Wait, your suprised that its a marble madness type of game? Your suprised that its cutscene's are silly? Erm the game is called Super Monkey Ball and consists of a cartoon monkey walking through puzzles inside a ball.. What do you expect from it?.. Metal Gear Solid? :cuckoo:

Ok they might keep you playing (can't see that myself) but you seem to say it's a bad thing rather than just a redeeming feature
ah well, each to their own I guess.
TBH this will be the last Nintendo console I buy. Im just not impressed with the line-up compared to the PS2/XBOX and I'm not suprised Nintendo have been labelled as a kids console.
The only exclusive I enjoyed was Zelda and I cant justify keeping it just for Res Evil 4, so Im just going to flog it.

I really hate that attitude, can you say that you haven't enjoyed Metroid Prime, Mario Sunshine, F-Zero GX, Viewtiful Joe, Pikmin to name but a few.
I'm no Nintendo fanboy (The cube is my first ever Nintendo console) but I think their "We'll do what we do even if it doesn't appeal to the masses" attitude is what makes the games great. They are a little different, instead of sticking to the generic pap trotted out by the majority (not all, before anyone starts) of PS2 especially, and XBox to a lesser extent games companies.
I do have an XBox, cos I like my sports games and PGR2 :) but the cube is far and away my fave

I hated Metroid. :oh-hum:
Mario was dissapointing. :(
Viewtful Joe was ok but got bored halfway through, without the speed-up/slowdown gimmicks it was just a button basher.
I probably would like F-Zero, I was trying to get that today but they didnt have it, so I picked SMB2 instead.

i totally agree !!
GC my first Nintendo console too. And im loving it so far. Same with the N64 (my friend had one), a real gem of a console. sure not as many games are released in total. but i can think of more great games on the GC.
only games i am interested in the other consoles are FFX-2 and PGR2. GC and N64 are real 'cult' consoles :D

noooo way !! later on you fight less grunts (button mashers) and more boss type characters which require you to use different skills and dodging etc.
look Viewtiful Joe is coming to the PS2 so lets drop that game, it doesnt count. I didnt think it was a bad exclusive either. :D

I think its very good.
Goblin Viewtiful Joe was about combining various kicks/punches and special moves with speeding up/slowing down time. The fact that you went through half of it just bashing buttons means that you completely missed the point of the game. Don't blame the game for that, blame yourself.
Also what does it matter if Viewtiful Joe will eventually come to PS2? Do you see it on PS2 now?.. no. Its exclusive to GC right now and has been since last year, so why shouldn't people talk about it as a reason to have a GC.
As for your opinions on GC. They don't suprise me from someone who seems to hate everything Nintendo. Frankly why you ever bought a GC is a mystery.
True, in the same way that the only reason to own a PS2 was GTA3/Vice city. Now there's a better version on the xbox it doesn't make a difference
No one's mentioned
Resident Evil
Metal Gear solid: Twin snakes
Animal crossing
Harvest moon
I admit I just bought an xbox but that's mostly for Live and SP2, and now Winning eleven seems to be OOP on the cube I'll have to get that on the box (esp if it's Live)
IMO the only reason to own a PS2 was Pro Evolution Soccer. I considered buying a PS2 just for PES2. But then WE6:FE came out on GC so I didn't need to. Then PES3 came out on PC and that was when I finally decided I definitely wasn't getting a PS2.

eh? I never said I hate Nintendo? I loved the SNES and imo a games console is only as good as the games on it. I say I wont buy another Nintendo console because I think they will once again trail behind Sony/MS next time around.
I bought a GC because Mario64 is one of the best games I've played and wanted Mario Sunshine, plus the Resident Evil series. Mario Sunshine was a big dissapointment, Resident Evil was great but 2&3 were rubbish and Zero didn't offer anything new.

Very true! Ikaruga is, quite simply, a mind-blowing experience. You could literally sit at it for hours on end, learning the layout of each level. Of course, it's also available on the DreamCast- but I'd expect the GC version to be easier to track down.
My el cheapo Super Monkey Ball arrived from Tesco.com yesterday- cue frantic multiplayer session last night :D It's absolutely excellent! Obviously, the one-player mode isn't as great- so I can imagine you wouldn't like it if you have no friends ;)

Well I've just had a quick go of the single player mode and it seems alright actually... I thought SMB was just a party game thing (a little like Mario Party)- so these one-player levels are all new to me. Yes, they're timed- but I got up to one stage (the one where the platform in the middle splits up into smaller platforms) and was tearing my hair out after a few goes  It's the race against the time that catches you out!

It depends, if your sole aim is to complete the game quickly without having much fun then I guess you're doing fine. A lot of the fun comes from building up combos and doing pretty impressive moves to wow the people watching you play :)

You are aware that RE 2&3 were direct ports from the playstation originals and were released at a budget price?
RE:Zero offered an entirely new co-op method of play.

yes of course Im aware they were direct ports, I didnt expect them to be when I bought the cube though, I thought they were getting updated like the original.
The thing with RE0 is that apart from the co-op there wasnt much new. After 1,2,3 & CV I expected more, which is no-doubt why they have taken RE4 in a new direction and it looks all the better for it.

At the time the original RE was remade, I also assumed 2 & 3 would be getting proper remakes. However, when I found out they were just ports, I though that was pathetic, and they werent THAT much of a budget price

Are they really just exact ports of the PS1 originals- even with the same models/textures? That's very lame- at least they could have bundled them together, or better still, released a Resident Evil Trilogy disc :norty:
I bought REmake yesterday but I haven't had a chance to play it- I take it this is a more favourable conversion/remake? :)

Of course, they spent many months (IIRC) remaking RE1 and completely revamping the graphics/adding new areas etc. If they'd done this with RE2 & 3 then this would have delayed the release of RE4 significantly so instead they released the 2 ports with higher resolution graphics so they could focus their time on making RE4 the game it will be  They only released these 2 games to give fans the chance to keep up-to-date with the storyline and work their way through the series. RE1 was revamped to introduce new players to the series so they would go on to buy RE0 & RE4 (with many also purchasing 2/3 & CV for reasons mentioned above). RE1 is an amazing game and you are gonna love it  Once you've played that buy RE0 and that will keep you sorted until the release of RE4 :)
I preferred RE2 to RE1. I really can't see the remakes of RE2 and 3 cause a possible delay to RE4.
If anything, RE0 did that.

I was playing through it before with my younger brother- it's very addictive :D The easy level is very easy, and you start to think the whole game's going to be a breeze... Then I played advanced level and got to level 15! :brickwall Let's just say that it took about 8 continues to get past it, and I've never swore so much in my life
Great game though, especially racing through them on mutliplayer mode. I also have to give a quick mention to the name entry screen- definitely the best in any game ever made! :notworthy It also has the most interesting end credits I've ever seen as well

Sounds pretty good to me. Most people get stuck on level 7, I'm sure I needed more than 8 continues to get past. The great thing is you know it's your own fault rather than dodgy camera/game issues. As you say, the name entry shows how polished it is
You bought Super Monkey Ball 2... You are calling it "immature"? :oh-hum:
It's a fun game. It doesn't need to have a deep plotline, any "maturity", any fancy FMV effects... it just needs to be fun. SMB2 succeeds.
It's trying to be a game about monkeys in balls. Hence why it's called Super Monkey Ball. It's not exactly a mainstream name for a title and explains what it's about. If it was called "Super Monkey Shootout II Underground starring David Beckham" I would see your point...
I honestly can't see why you wouldn't like it - it's a simple, pure arcade game. A game having "cute" graphics shouldn't affect your ability to enjoy it. The game is upto scratch... whether it's fashionable to like it is another story.
Oh, and saying the GC is full of kids games is just pathetic. Again, just because something has "cute" graphics it doesn't mean it's for kids. I just think you're influenced in that you don't want to be seen playing these "kiddies" games to be honest. Nothing more. :searchme:

I wouldnt say its a kids game, its like Mario Sunshine the cutscenes seem childish but the game is hard. Either way if I enjoy a game I couldnt care less of what people thought of it which is why Im currently enjoying Barbie Horse Adventure. j/k

Do bear in mind I was slightly drunk at the time... it was suprisingly coherent.
What I mean is that it doesn't rely on any "maturity" or "immaturity" - there is no such thing as a mature or an immature game (well... except Elmo's ABC and 123, Mario Teaches Typing or the Pico's games etc... but you get my point). The game has been designed for a universal audience. Just 'cause it isn't a game where you kill multiple people with lots of swearing, or that it doesn't try to be realistic doesn't mean it's immature in any way... in fact, it could be argued it's more mature...
I also don't remember any cut-scenes being childish in Mario either? Still, 'tis a fun game. I don't get why you don't like it.

Just try to turn the corner as quickly as possible- don't try to venture out to anywhere near the outer edge of the corners at all. If you're not after all the bananas, you can fall down off the edge of the first platform, miss one corner and save some time!
Level 19 stumped me for a while after this one, but I'm a pro at it now and I can do it in 4 seconds :D I lost a lot of lives on Level 25 as well (grrrr...), so when I got to level 26 I only got a few goes and couldn't beat the timer :( I'm playing some more tomorrow- I will not be beaten!

Just wait until Master 3... The hardest thing I have ever done in my life. Honestly, it's so insanely difficult it took me around 6 hours to beat that one level. Thank god the rest of master is much easier.
Personally, I really enjoyed SMB2 but it was nowhere near as good as the original, mainly because they dumbed-down a lot of the best things from the first game - esp. the fact they allowed you to unlock extra lives/continues. It took me around 4 months to 100% complete the original - most of that time spent trying to get through expert with one continue - whereas it took me less than a week to 100% complete SMB2.
Monkey Golf was a significant improvement, though. :dork:
What's target like on SMB2? IMO this was one of the best party games ever on the original - stil trying to beat my 1,200 best score!

Target 2 isn't as good as the original - as with the main game it has been 'dumbed down' somewhat to appeal to a wider audience (no more buoys, easier controls, ability to look downwards so you can see where you will land, no more turning 180+ degrees - even if you are going really fast etc.).
That said, you can play split screen with up to 4 players and I know a lot of people will prefer not having to wait for their turn. Also, playing with a group of monkeys working together is quite good fun - but it is not anywhere near as skill based as before. :(

I find Monkey Target 2 ruddy difficult compared to the first, the inability to turn around when going very fast annoys the hell out of me. Still, the split screen action is fun.
I was reading something the other day, apparently key hole surgeons who play Super monkey ball are more likely to be much better at their job!

well got round to trying Advanceed in SMB1..
... Finally completed it !!
level 30 was having me in fits. I was going mad, kept falling off the edge. I was literally jumping up and down when i finally finished it.
Went back to do some levels again in practice, and the last level is so easy !! Just need to zoom straight through the exit when the timing is right - DOH !!
oooh really love the spiral level :D
this game is gonna me me bald.
Is the last level the one with all the platforms spinning around you? I thought there was one after that?

It's a pain in the arse that last level! I haven't been playing SMB much, I have to admit (I've been on Mario Sunshine and Zelda :D ), but I had a third go of Advanced level the other day.
First time I played it, I couldn't get past level 15. Second time I played it I lost a lot of lives on the spiral level (for some reason I always seemed to move the stick to the right and fall off the edge! I can do it now though) and the other day it was level 30 that stumped me. You'd end up getting onto one of the platforms near the outer edge, then you hit one of thouse bouncer things! Words cannot describe how annoying this is!
Still an excellent game, and I'll be playing it again in the near future when I've finished Sonic Adventure 2 :)

They are the 'Advanced Extra' levels actually - Master comes after Expert Extra (in other words you have to complete all 50 levels of Expert + all 10 levels of Expert Extra without using a continue before you get to Master :p ).
The full game breaks down like this (for anyone who doesn't understand):
Beginner - 10 Stages
Beginner Extra - 3 Stages (only accessable by completing all 10 stages of Beginner without losing a life)
Advanced - 30 Stages
Advanced Extra - 5 Stages (only accessable by completing all 30 stages of Advanced without losing a life)
Expert - 50 Stages
Expert Extra - 10 Stages (only accessable by completing all 50 stages of Expert without using a continue, you can lose lives)
Master - 10 Stages (only accessable by completing all 50 stages of Expert and all 10 stages of Expert Extra without using a continue, again you can lose lives)
IMHO - With enough practice getting through the 60 Expert/Expert Extra levels without using a continue isn't too bad - it's the Master levels that present the real problem (I have only ever completed Master 3 once :help: ).

I said that!
I did really like the original Monkey Golf, it was so different to the usual types of golf games, but some of the holes *cough*the big slopey one*cough* were too dependent on luck (IMHO) and once I got a really low total score, I could never beat it. :(
Monkey Golf 2 on the other hand is not really luck dependent at all (even if it is rather generic). As with most things in SMB2 the music was better in the first one too.
So all in all, I feel it was quite close between the two, but there's more replay value for me in its second incarnation.
PS - I really hope SMB3 (whenever and for whichever platform it is released) has online play. Being able to at least submit your scores would be great (coz i wood kicc awl ur aZZeZ!!!1111 ;) ).
You can always submit your scores here

maybe golf is better in the second one, but my dislike of real golf sways me largely to the original, also i like the big slope hole  but the last one is too much about precicion timing for my liking :) ive never got to the master stages, or anywhere near for that matter. your skill and commitment to the monkey ball way is commenable :notworthy

I did some time ago (in fact it was probably over a year ago now) but the only way to verify scores on here is to post screen shots - and I don't have easy access to a digital camera+web space. :(
With an in-game online ranking system, there would be no need for anything like that.
I did enjoy posting scores on here though, tough competition.
No need to verify the scores. We've always taken peoples word for it
OK then - Monkey target, 10 rounds, help items and wheel of fortune both on - highest score is now 2,720.
Monkey golf - hmm never mind :)
edit - SMB1 !

I had both SMB1 and 2, and I hated them. I gather most of the people who liked the game enjoyed the fact that it was really hard to complete a level (which in turn implies a long life span). I actually found it particularly annoying, and was glad to be parted with them.
Best regards

I don't know about that. If it was too easy it wouldn't have been any fun but it wasn't really hard, it just took some effort and was fun to attempt it
OK just got SMB2, and yes Monkey target 2 is so much easier! First go I got 12,000+, and I reckon it could easily be much much higher with a bit of practice. Monkey dogfight looks good for multiplayer tho'!
