View Full Version : help with KV36FS70S Sony TV
Friend got KV36FS70 S Sony telly the other day. he used to have the 28" version...
he hooked his sony dvd (the one with the 5.1 dd amp built in), via s-video leads to scart to the back of the telly, as was before. only problem was his r1 discs are now black and white, but the r2 ones are fine.
any ideas?

Tell him to use a SCART lead direct to the RGB SCART socket - usually AV1, rather than using s-video leads/SCART.
not an option, because the RGB Scart is taken up by Sky Digital. May I also add that he used to have the 28" 16:9 wega and it was all fine.

Yeah, thought it was a bit strange that it worked OK on the other TV but not on the new one. Has the DVD player not got 2x SCARTs, with one being a passthru?
It should work regardless, though.
Very odd.
Can't u use the 2nd scart socket on the sky digibox to get RGB for both the dvd & sky digibox ? - that's what i do
(If amp has no scart output, this negates the above option i guess!)
One other idea - Does the sony dvd system have manual selection for NTSC / PAL / AUTO. May be worth checking the manual.

footnote:
If u find a solution, my m8 has the same telly, got colour picture, but it was wavy when attempting to use the other scarts as s-video. He found s-video to s-video to work fine.(except the svideo cable is exposed at the front of the tv!)
think i am going to have to and see him about it and put my techie hard hat on...
NTSC via s-video not enabled in service menu? Mine was the same!
Taken from HCC Forum:-
I have had my Sony 36FS70 for 4 months now, and originally had a problem viewing NTSC DVD's though S-Video.
It turned out that the scart ports at the back of the TV should automatically detect the s-video NTSC signal but this option was NOT set to ON. Seems a bit daft that Sony would not set this to on by default, as most users with DVD players will want to run S-Video or RGB signals to their TV. Sony were not very helpful and refused to give me the instructions on how to access the service menu on the TV so that I could enable the auto-detection of the s-video signal. Instead they recommended I callout a Sony engineer to do the job !! Needless to say, it is easy to do yourself if you know how to
access the service menu - just be careful not to change any other settings by mistake.
These are the instructions I used to access the service menu -
1.Turn the set on with the remote control
2.Turn the set off from the TV on/off switch
3.Hold down the two dimpled buttons on top of TV, and keep them depressed.
4.Turn the set on from TV on/off switch.
5.After a few seconds the set will come on. Now you can release the two dimpled buttons.
6.The menu button on the remote will now toggle between the standard menu, and the service menu.
Once you have pressed the menu button twice, the service menu should appear. There is an option for Special Adjustment - select this and scroll down the list. Number 20 and 21 on my TV are listed as NTSC AutoYc AV2 and NTSC AutoYc AV3. These were initially set to off on my TV, and as a result the set would not automatically detect an S-Video NTSC signal and the picture was poor. When you have set these to ON, exit the service menu and turn the TV off and on again. Careful not to alter any other settings, as this can screw up your TV.
that sounds like the most plausible situation edith, because it's the ntsc thing that is the problem (r1 discs being b/w and r2's being fine!)... thanks!
