View Full Version : Food that you used to love but can't buy anymore?

Just been thinking with all the food threads - is there anything you used to love which you can't get in the UK anymore?

I'll start with two, both by nasty foodgiants Nestle:

Nestle Lucky Charms (cereal with little marshmallow pieces in)
Nestle Chocolate Pretzels (salted pretzels covered in white/milk chocolate)

Both super delicious but not available (in the UK?) anymore.

Nestle Chocolate Pretzels (salted pretzels covered in white/milk chocolate)

Ahhh, the fantastic Nestle Pretzel Flipz!!!

I was gutted when these weren't sold anymore.

You can buy them imported from the US from CyberCandy, but be warned they aren't cheap at £1.50 per bag, and also they are sold out at the moment too.

I wish Nestle would sell them again, but apparently people have asked and got a flat out "NO!!". :cuckoo:

Used to be able to get this liquid mint chocolate that you would squirt on your ice-cream and it would chill into solid chocolate. Nice stuff, but not seen it since I was a kid!

There is a version of "Treat!" Chocolate sauce that hardens seconds after it's been squirted :D. Asda sell it for about a quid.

I think it's the "Treat!" brand. I have a bottle of the maple syrup in the cupboard in the kitchen but I can't be bothered to go look. It's a blue bottle, with a coloured flip cap. Found in the ice cream topping section thingy.

Edit: Found it

Puffa puffa rice - breakfast of the gods. Even better in its special-edition form of Sootie stars (Sweep was plugging coco-pops at the time - :gag: )

Ovaltine chocolate bars, MIA since the 80s. Sounds like they would be poo, but they were :luv:

Chocolate-coated garibaldis.

Breakfast slices - rasher-shaped thingies made from reformed bacon and 'nads (or something similar). Very tasty, don't want to know what's in them (see also haggis)

All chocolate bars taste like pap now!

Does anyone remember maltona drops-they were lush

and what about rissoles. Sparks bakery used to sell them. For the uninitiated they were corn beef and potato brick shaped patties -coated in breadcrumbs and grilled or fried till golden brown.

Tasty, tasty very, very tasty!

How about 80s Mars bars. I know you still get Mars bars but they made the toffee softer and changed the chocolate at the start of the 90s and I dont like them as much.

It's the same with Cadbury's Caramels, why did they make them smoother? I liked them the way they were!

And Whispas! They changed the shape and the chocolate. The chocolate originally had a nice powderiness to it, now it's just pants. :(

Does anyone remember any of the following fantastic treats which are sadly no longer with us?

Wheelz - massive bags of crisps you could buy from KwiK Save with a squirrel on the front - they came in salt and onion flavour (I think) and were fantastic as they lasted forever.

Um Bongo and Moonshine - flavoured drinks with memorable advert tunes (everyone knows the Um Bongo theme tune right)

and now a real blast from the past
Gold Wonder Pot Dessert - crumble style deserts which only needed boiling water and a couple of minutes standing time to be ready - they were FABULOUS, but only lasted a few months on the shelves.

I also miss Fuze Bars - can you still get these?

Oh and my local Home Bargain shop (Liverpool) still sell Fish ' n' Chips in multipack - lovely they are too!

I used to love Honey Bear spread. It was a bit like Golden Syrup only it looked "browner" and was thicker. It came in round tub similar the same size as Dairylea 'spreadable'.

Totally agree about Pacers. Basically like minty Chewits.

Also, Splicers. Fruity chewy bars. Had a cracking advert where a boy was wandering along eating one and everything behind him would change colour as he took a bite.

You can still get Vice Versas - they seemingly were relauched earlier this year. Still rather difficult to find but are available in some Morrisons and Woolworths.

Agree with Shamaniac about toast brot - yes it tastes like crap if you use it for sandwiches and not toast but I like it and always insisted my sister brought some back with her. Synders of Hannover cheese pretzels are another - they're delicious and far better than any pretzel over here.

Food of yore:

Pacers - I remember them before the green stripes
Oil Rigs - best sweets evah. Penny chews that tasted a bit like tablet - last seen in about 1984
Original Boost - the coconut ones. The biscuit ones aren't as nice as they used to be either.
Proper Mars Bars - none of this wishy washy sub-old Milky Way rubbish. Even the 1993+ version would be preferable.
Marks & Spencer prairie wheel crisps - best crisps evah. Stopped making them in about 1984 but the prairie wheel design is still used in some of their snacks.
Cheddarie - delicious cheese spread, fantastic in toasties. Now all we have to choose from is plastic Dairylea or Philadelphia :(
Kraft cheese spread - bright orange stuff in a glass jar. V nice.
Alpen Rise & Shine - 'fresh' orange juice. Well, it was powdered actually but it was about as close as you got to fresh juice in the 1970s. Tasted a bit like Sunny D california version before they messed with the ingredients of it.
Wispas - why have Cadburys all but got rid of these in their ridiculous and pointless recent rebranding? The replacement is crap.
All Stars - bacon flavoured crisps from the 70s shaped like a star and with a free football sticker.
TAB - prefer original TAB to Clear TAB but both were quite nice.

Also, Splicers. Fruity chewy bars. Had a cracking advert where a boy was wandering along eating one and everything behind him would change colour as he took a bite.

Christ – I didn’t think anyone would mention Splicers – I always thought I was the only one who remembered them. They were a sort of bar of Opal Fruits (sorry – Starburst) all merged together – very colourful and very tasty.

Pacers sort of evolved from Opal Mints – the latter were either white or pale green (as were Tootie Minties) but pacers went for the (Lotus Cortina) white with green stripes look. Remember the advert for them with the ice skaters?

Crisps I miss:
Rancheros, Kung Fooeys, Bones, Fangs, Bats(?), Football Crazy and Fish ‘n Chips of course. Oh and they used to make chicken flavoured Wheat Crunchies (bit odd but quite nice) and bacon flavoured Nik Naks. Come to think of it, Golden Wonder Sausage & Tomato crisps were pretty nice.

Lollies:
Haunted House – white with a fluorescent picture – they were gorgeous, Dracula – black ice with red jelly and ice cream. Thank god they still make Fabs and Zooms. Wasn’t there a lolly entirely made of the yellow bit of a Zoom – called a Jungle Jim or something?

Sweets:
Blobs, Space Dust (and the more violent Rocket Pops), Fruitettes, Toffee Treats, Texans, Tootie Minties.

Drinks:
Cresta, Noggins, Quattro and there were some where the plastic bottle was shaped like a polar bear and you had to gnaw the top off to get into it.

Oh and I remember those Rissole things too – looked a bit like fish cakes – I remember them being quite nice but I don’t know if I’d like them now.

Matt.

Marks and Spencer have the terrible habit of making food that I really love, then stop doing them again. They used to do this wonderful pre-cooked pasta with bacon and egg on top. So nice, then they just stop making it.

Chedderie was great too - nearest thing I have found to it, was a Kwik Save own brand effort, but even that wasn't spot on.

Bitz n Pizza were nice crisps - I always used to like those.

Biscuit boosts used to be quite nice, til they packed them full of sugar. The center of those old ones were amazing.

Still rather difficult to find but are available in some Morrisons and Woolworths. This is perhaps the best news I've heard ever. (Well, certainly in the last few hours or so.) I shall be turning up late for work tomorrow after striding into Woolworths of Reading and demanding they sell me Vice Versas.

I also miss Pretzel Flipz (salt... and chocolate... tasting nice together! Almost as wacky as that final "z" instead of an "s").

Crisp-wise, I sorely miss barbecue flavoured Tuba Loops. To pre-empt the inevitable question (since some people who hear this lament, often unasked, tend to say "Hula Hoops?!" to me): Tuba Loops contained two shapes (one like a Hula Hoop, and one a bit like a Wheat Crunchie) but were made out of the same stuff as Square Crisps. The barbecue flavouring made them delectable.

I'm always falling victim to getting addicted to something they then discontinue:
Tuna pasties (no really, they were very nice!)
Chicken tikka pasties (same again!)
Microwavable breakfast bap
Cinnamon swirl bread
Sweet potato & 3bean wrap (they've still got it but have removed the sweet potato  )
& they did jars of ready-made bread sauce one christmas which saved a lot of bother & was delicious, haven't seen them in a couple of years though.

This is a fairly recent loss from the shelves but whatever happened to Strawberry Alpen - gave off the image of healthiness and yet still managed to taste good.

Also Mountain Dew - seemed to only last about 9 months before they (Pepsi I think) dumped it.

This ones a bit vague but someone started doing savoury pastries you heated in the toaster (same idea as pop tarts but savoury stuff like cheese and ham or pizza fillings. They didnt last long but were the ultimate in junk fast food.

Mountain Dew is still available in America as far as I know.

I don't suppose anyone remembers those chocolate bars they used to sell in Woolworths (about 20 years ago lol) they were like crunchie bars but the honeycomb was either strawberry or mint flavour?? YUM!

Does anyone remember any of the following fantastic treats which are sadly no longer with us?

Wheelz - massive bags of crisps you could buy from KwiK Save with a squirrel on the front - they came in salt and onion flavour (I think) and were fantastic as they lasted forever.

yes loved these made by "Burtons" I beleive. wasn't just kwik save though - most of the major supermarkets (Asda, tesco, morrisons etc) used to stock them as well as our local off licence :)

Used to do 3 flavours - plain (ready salted), salt and vinegar and mexican spice flavour. all superb.

This ones a bit vague but someone started doing savoury pastries you heated in the toaster (same idea as pop tarts but savoury stuff like cheese and ham or pizza fillings. They didnt last long but were the ultimate in junk fast food.
I think it was pilsbury (the one with the giggling dough man). I think they went from toaster pockets to microwave in a daft cardboard tube (or did they always have a microwave option?), then just vanished.

Tesco chilled Chilli Lasagne. Used to be pure manna from heaven but my local store stopped getting it in and then Tesco pulled the whole range. A chilled lasagne (about 400-500g) with chilli instead of bolognese sauce and with crushed tortilla chips on top - fantastic! I've tried the Chicago Town frozen version and had a major IBS reaction (but had same with other CT products), so at least it went on a high note and I didn't have to go through seeing in the shop but knowing I couldn't have it! It's bad enough with rice pudding.

Whenever I mention this to friends of my own age ... they all claim they have never heard of it - please, someone on here, prove to me that I am not going insane and confirm this sandwich spread did actually exist ??

They were also relaunched briefly about three years - however, rather than the old style of yore these were just your bog standard maize crisps. Original Ringos always had a distinct cheese and onion flavour as well.

Pacers sort of evolved from Opal Mints – the latter were either white or pale green (as were Tootie Minties) but pacers went for the (Lotus Cortina) white with green stripes look.
Very early Pacers did *not* have a green stripe, they were white.

Not going too far back for this one, but Jacobs launched a Chilli cracker about 3 years ago. Only lasted about 6 months - but they were absolutely fantastic. Then one day, they were gone.....

A week ago, I'd have said "Chelsea Whoppers", but I went home last weekend and my brother had secured a box of the things from somewhere or another. Yay!

Why has this thread changed from food to sweets?
I'd imagine that the demographic of this forum combined with the shelf life of products, would point to our sweet buying phase as most likely to contain forgotten treasures.

I miss the old style ring pull on cans, who else used to rip it into two bits (the ring and the bit of the top of the can, and use one to flick the other like a flying frisbee thing) :D

Snack-A-Jacks........stupid quaker or whoever decided recently to stop making these and come up with "Mini Bites" which are the same thing only they have next to no taste now and are like eating cardboard half the time.

No shortage of these round here last time I looked (couple of weeks ago..?). If you like them you should try the Asda own brand ones - the cheese and onion ones are better than proper Snack-a-jacks IMHO.

The white meringue chocolates similar to ferrero rocher, were made by the same company. Last time I saw them was in prague in 2000.

Chocolate:

Cabana - similar to bounty but had bits of cherries and toffee in it.
Bandits
Banjo
Rum & Raisen bar
Cadbury's Silk - Strawberry flavour chocolates

Crisps:

Smith's Salt N' Vinegar
Muyrphy's Worchester Sauce
KP Beef

All so much better than the insipid Walker's rubbish we get nowdays.

Ice Cream:

Tubs of Italiano - Strawberry and chocolate chip were best
Mint Chocices
Ice cream chocolates - mint and orange flavours
Ski yoghurt icecream bars - Strawberry was lovely

Orange coloured and flavoured segments, usually in the penny sweet sections alongside the jelly-welly wellington boots with a light dusting of icing sugar

Pink Panther bars - :notworthy

Ranchero crisps :notworthy

Iced cups - cool tasting chocolate in a little foil cup :luv:

They don't make them like they used to!

WHAM BARS , they use to rip out fillings for fun.
They were so hard and once chewed could pull full teeth out.
The modern day version does not have the same capabilities.

As an update on the ice cream sauce that hardens-Silver Spoon have introduced two new flavours-white chocolate is one and Vanilla is the other. Saw them in Asda last night. No mint yet though :(

They haven't been 'stodgy' since they changed them last year. They're now rather insipid and, other than the toffee, taste a bit like old Milky Way.

They also got smaller in weight yet the calorie count stayed the same. Hmm :suspect:

One thing I couldn't find for years and years were Toffee Crumble ice-creams - I was convinced they'd stopped making them. Then the other day I walked into Safeway, and what was staring back at me through the freezer cabinets? Packs of 4, perfectly preserved Toffee Crumbles. I bought 20. My housemate and I devoured them all within 3 days.

You can still get Roysters - hadn't seen them for ages but our work sandwich van had some last week.

Another vote for brontosaurus rib Flintstones crisps from Sainsburys - very yummy. And the Chinese/Tandoori/Thai (?) multipacks of Skips.

Can you still get Cadbury's Spira, mango and mandarin Lilt and prawn flavour Monster Munch?

I thought Discos had been phased out but I saw some last week. Not found Cheetos in this country for a few years though.

No. 25 years ago, you were smaller. ;)

The original mars bar weighed 68grams, now weighs 62.5g I think. Chicken tikka pies can be found at morrisons. What about Relays? Like a chewy round sweet in a bag. Can still find the equivilent in a bag of revels.

Salt and vinegar Discos are  , i still see Cheetos about, i often see their delivery lorries about too. There was a knobbly variety ( Niknak style ) and a normal ( Wotsit style ) once upon a time. think they only do one type now.

Does anyone remember Robinsons Orange and Cola cordial. Truly rank

Never mind S&V Discos, what about the spicy ones? I forget what the official flavour name was (or was it "spicy"? :)) but I last saw them in the library coffee bar at York university about 10 years ago. When I went back there a couple of years ago I had a look but alas to no avail :(

And Heinz Beef Soup! None of this broth nonsense, proper beef soup in a tin. Not seen that since mad cow disease came to light! ;)

And you used to be able to buy a bag of sweets that were basically Minstrels without the shells. Like the ones you get in bags of Revels. Anyone know what they were called?

I can never seem to find Golden Wonder crisps. Walkers have taken over the crisps market far too much.

Walkers bought out a few crisp companys and various brands years back - including smiths crisps...Golden Wonder have been re launched again and include the ringo in their list of brands

Yoghurt Whirl.

It was kind of like an instant whip powdered mix that you added milk to - but it was yoghurty. Black Cherry was my favourite.

I used to love Tesco's Tex Mex dips (the nacho cheese was like crack) until they changed the recipe - now all four dips taste putrid.

The words "Great new taste" on food packaging always fills me with dread, because it usually means they've ruined it.

Biscuit Boost used to be my favourite choccy bar, but then they added glucose and it became too sickly sweet.

And didn't Shreddies used to be bigger and more malty tasting than they are now?

Anyone remember the original Special K (with thin crispy flakes of rice) before it went malty?

Couple more that have come to me:

Pasta Twirls - These were great, crisp style snack made from Pasta that not only tasted great but were low in fat. Only ever saw them in Whistlestop and MIA for years now. Shame as with an emphasis on healthy snacks could have sold well.

Poppadom Bites - Tubes of pringle stlye poppadoms, the Chilli flavour ones were lovely but not seen them for a while now
