 Wow, nice work.

Just knowing some of the titles from the Golden Princess deal are going to be released by HKL makes me drool... hmmmmmmm, Golden Princess....

Question: Does anyone have the large cover scans from the HKL site on their drive? I'm looking for the initial cover designs which were later replaced by the final release ones (as far as I can remember: City Hunter and Legend of a Fighter. There's also the old Big Boss cover and the alternate Body Weapon Cover.) Also, does anyone know of any other alternate covers?

I could be wrong but Im only aware of The Big Boss having its cover changed.
If you send a cheque to HKL for £2 + your old blue cover, they will send you the replacement cover.

You're right about Big Boss having it's cover changed after its release, but I was looking for the alternate ones that only existed on-line. Since the release of City Hunter and Legend of a Fighter, the on-line covers have also changed. I e-mailed HKL twice about perhaps sending me the old ones, but no reply. Possibly rights issues, or they don't want alternate covers being used, or probably too busy working on the new DVDs and I don't blame them!

Didn't know about HKL doing a replacement scheme for Big Boss. Thanks! Sorry, if I made this go off-topic a little.

Thanks JohnMac for that,

However the only HKL DVD that BnB didn't review is Battle Creek Brawl so here's the link for Drive (http://www.bulletsnbabesdvds.com/article.php?sid=36)

Well im no expert in HK cinema, far from it, but every disk ive bought ive been impressed with film and commentary/extras. So much so in fact, 3 months ago I decided to sod selectively chosing a title now and again and just buy the damn lot...only need Battle Creek Brawl now and I have every disc to date..

Although having said that "Hong Kong 1941" doesnt look very good going on the trailer...it doesnt look like an action film of any type...

Yo, Vinyl!
so how many HKL are there then. Like you I have been very impressed with every damn disk and would like to have a rough idea how much it will cost me.;) I own about eight so far.

I think so far there have been 31 HKL titles released plus Drive which was released on the Medusa label as it is not actually a HK film but is an honorary HKL title. I have 22 of those. To buy all of them (do you really want Body Weapon, it is rank) it would cost about £320 or so if bought at the current sale prices from Under18 or Play. At their normal prices it would cost nearer £500, and at full rrp more like £650:eek: .

Vinyl-Pants
13-11-2001, 22:25
Well, imo, Body Weapon is probably the worst HKL release BUT its not as bad as many people make out - the story is a bit...erm...odd shall we say :)

The other "weaker" films, imo, are Postman Fights Back and In The Line Of Duty.

All the above 3 are still worth owning of course - they are just the weakest of a strong collection from HKL

Also, you tend to read a lot of negative critism of Black Sheep Affair, Hitman and City Hunter - I thought all 3 were really good!

The rest, particularly the Bruce Lee titles are classics - must buys!

<I>Battle Creek Brawl</I> is more of a historical curiosity than any kind of classic - it was Jackie Chan's first, failed, attempt at cracking the US market.

Vinyl-Pants
14-11-2001, 13:18
which is the main reason its the only title I do not own...although I suspect if the right offer comes along I will buy it just for the sake of being a completist.

A tough one!
Depends on your preferred style of action:
Here's a good start:
Jackie Chan:
Police Story - all round action
Miracles - good drama, and brief but fab action
Snake In The Eagle's Shadow - old school at its best
Armour of God - a bit slow for Some, but the action scenes are his very best.

City Hunter - visual delight, but a little wacky for some.

wire-fu
OUATIC - Jet Li masterpiece
OUATIC 2 - better than 1 for action
Iron Monkey - similar to CTHD, but better, for action, and a less serious, less accomplished film.

others not to be missed:
Drive - released under Medusa as opposed to HKL, but a fab fight-fest.
All Bruce Lee's films, even GOD as the 2 disc-set is great. Also include GOD2 as the choreography is great.
Magnificent Butcher - Sammo and Yuen Biao at fighting best
Eastern Condors - great War Drama, and one of the best fight finales ever.
Encounters of the spooky kind - great! wacky! top fights & hopping vampires!

there are of course, many more greats, but these are my picks of the bunch. I also really like ITLOD 4 for the non-stop incredible action.

IMO Black Sheep Affair has some stunning Kung-fu & swordplay, City Hunter is one of the only HK comedy films that I have actually laughed at (Jackie is hilarious), and has some good action too as has all Jackie Chan films & Hitman I think is the weakest of the 3!

HKL titles have now become a must see on most peoples lists here at DVDforums, long may they reign :D

I wasn't expecting much from this release for some reason. But your review has convinced me. I enjoyed In The Line Of duty so I'll probably like Red Wolf and the commentary sounds like a lot of fun. The second disc doesn't sound bad either, I don't know what the total running time would be if all the video extras were added up but HKL have put quite a lot on there. So I'll definitely be adding this to the collection.

Thanks for posting about that. Some are working like the ones for Beast Cops and Police Assassins. I'll find the reviews for each one and start updating the links.

This is worth sticking in a errr... sticky?

A rather nice interview with our favourite commentator at So Good ....

Bey Logan on fellow commentators:

"Mark King's (partner commentator on OUATIC) was the most exasperating, and it keeps coming back to haunt me. I really should have hit him on the head with the microphone stand...

Following a recent thread (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=258576) in the DVD and Movie Forum where a decline in the quality of HKLs releases was discussed, I think the time has come to unstick this thread.

Perhaps someone else (more knowledgeable about Hong Kong movies than I) could start a similar thread that wouldn’t be restricted to just HKL releases. Apart from the many HKL DVDs I’ve got, the only other DVDs I have like these are Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Enter the Dragon, Legend of Drunken Master and Fist of Legend. So I would be very interested in finding out about all the other Hong Kong movies worth buying.

Cleggers

Well I'll keep the thread going!

HKL may not have been releasing the best films recently, but at least they're still trying. We'll get our favourites one day, as long as we continue to support them...

My review for Tiger On The Beat is now up at Asian Film Reviews (http://www.asianfilmreviews.tk).

Well my review for the re-relase of Iron Monkey is now up at Asian Film Reviews (http://www.asianfilmreviews.tk).

Have a read. It's the longest review I've done yet, so I hope it doesn't bore you!

William Shatners Wig

Our comparison review of both HKL's Iron Monkey releases can be found here (http://www.dvddebate.com/article.php?sid=4074&mode=&order=0&thold=). The outcome isn't good - unfortunately.

Iron Monkey is a great piece of chop socky fun, and well deserving of a place on any kung-fu fan's shelf. The acting is good, direction lively and the action is spectacular, especially more so as it was before the breakthroughs in digital effects, and so relies on good old fashioned wires and the performers' agility.

Which DVD to get is a tricky question. While the new Platinum Edition wins hands down on extras, and sports a comparatively impressive soundtrack, the quality of the video transfer is a real let down. Surprisingly, the older disc offers a better and more pleasing viewing experience.
