After several competitions on PES4 some people are still struggling to get to grips with playing the game. In fact, some poeple are getting worse :(
This thread is for the better players to share their secrets on how to play the game. Don't be shy.
Here is the button configuration of the PS2 pad to help out.

What I'd like to know from damell and Tequila is why you are so hard to knock off the ball?

For what my mediocre tips are worth....
Sort of in answer to Ono's question - don't use the sprint button so much and the ball will be under tighter control and should make it harder for the opposition to get the ball.
Always make a pass and the push in the opposite direction of the pass so that your team-mate comes to collect the ball, thus preventing opponent intervention.
L1 + Triangle can sometimes give you a superb little dink over the defence to put your man through.
Corners and especially free kicks - hold L1 so that you get more power in the shot/cross.
Probably all common knowledge :)
I'll cut and paste the tips I sent out to Andybhoy earlier:
- Pack the defence and midfield ( I play 4-5-1 or 3-5-2 depending on who is the opponent).
- leave your fastest strike up front.
- play the through ball to him more
- don't be afraid to shoot from half way line.
- don't **** about in defence if you are under pressure just wacked the ball upfield.
- don't be afraid to foul - useful for breaking up play or to stop a breakaway (even in the opponent's half)
- if a player gets a yellow card substitute him. (you can foul more then)
:D
Also remember:
Square, Cross & R1 together to put pressure on the attacker. Got to be careful with this as it can leave HUGE gaps to be exploited.

This is only if you want both the player you are controlling and the closest computer controlled player to pressurise. Pressing either button on it's own causes one or the other to pressurise meaning gaps won't be as likely ( same on xbox but with X and A)
Edit: not sure if R1 is needed unless opposing player is using it also

I honestly couldn't tell you what I do differently and that's not a cop out :suspect: ;)
One tip I will give is master super cancel! The number of players, including your Lous and your Bolchs don't seem to use it. I win so much possession by just intercepting passes, moving towards headers and such.
It's also deadly if you use it to move towards through balls. Completely wrong foots the defenders and gives pretty much instant control, depending on the player receiving.

I played a friendly against someone on here (think it may have been scottwilson82) who was lethal at crossing into the box and getting great headers in. He said you had to tap X (Shoot) twice to keep the header low and fast.
Managed to pull it off a few times but struggle with the timing, do you press it just before it reaches your player or as soon as you make the cross?
P.S. Good idea regarding this thread btw, could do with all the help I can get :D

Sure it wasn't just the different types of crosses? press once for looping high centre, twice for fast centre and three times for along the floor?

This is the thing I really noticed the first time that I played Tequila. Someone who can use it - and knows when to use it - has a massive advantage.
I find I am never ready to do it when needed because of the way I hold the pad (one finger to alternate between R1 and R2, rather than a finger ready on each)
And I certainly need to take Ono's advice about hoofing it out of defence - the number of goals I have conceded trying to pass my way out is ridiculous
My contribution would be to the thread is to suggest changing the camera to 'Wide' mode. It is not immediately obvious how to do this on the PC, but you have to do it from an offline game (from the Pause menu) and the change should then stick for the online game. Changing the camera angle was the single thing that made the most difference in my play, particularly as I like to thread through balls through
Another tip is to make a substition just before an attacking corner. The subsequent confusion in the defence will often leave someone unmarked (the same applies for defensive corners, too - so be wary of subs then)
Always make a pass and the push in the opposite direction of the pass so that your team-mate comes to collect the ball, thus preventing opponent intervention.
For some reaosn that doesn't work for me a lot of the time and my player just stands there waiting to receicve pass.
I've started using super cancel a lot more but I'm still far from mastering it.
My 2 tips for this thread...
Sounds daft but keep calm and watch what's actually happening on the pitch.
Be aware of who's around you and where your players are at all times using the radar. Glances at the radar every 20/30 seconds can show you how to pass to if you get in trouble and also which attackers are clear.

Ah that may explain why I can't pull it off most of the time. If I remember correctly you were making quick breaks up the wings and doing fast crosses so that would explain why you mentioned only that one. Was a while ago so I might be mistaken.
What I'd like to know from damell and Tequila is why you are so hard to knock off the ball?
Don't know how to answer that one too, practice I suppose. Try to dribble more and try those dribble challenges to get used to dribbling.
To defend against dribbling don't just hold down square and X, hold down square to get the computer to close down and back off with the player controlled player so they can block the pass or get to the ball if they lose the computer.
Final tip if you want to be flashy you could try the triple shot feint press square then wait half a second square, square then X.
My tip - Concentrate on the basics. If you keep the ball and keep the passes simple (triangles, passing backwards and sideways in order to keep the ball), sooner or later you will open your opponent up. No need for any fancy R2 tricks or tactics, keeping possession and being a mean finisher are the two most important skills in my book. It's very frustrating for your opponent when they can't get the ball.

My tip would be pick a team and get to know them inside out, The best starting 11, formation, everything. And keep practicing with them.
I tend to prefer playing as teams with at least one fast midfielder, usually one of the wingers so I can cut inside and use the pace to go past defenders, or skin one of the full backs to whip deadly crosses in.
Barcalona are a good side for this tactic. Play Ronaldinho on the left side and Giuly on the right. Both are pretty pacey and Ronaldinho has a hell of a shot on him for when you cut inside.
I also like playing a forward who's good in the air and a smaller, nippier partner who can pick up the bits and pieces and chase onto through balls.
Learning the different crosses is a great help too. The 3 tap, low driven cross across the box is un-defendable at times. As is the 2 tap cross.
Also dont be afraid to shot on sight. You'd be surprised how many of them fly in, or come back off the keeper for someone to stick in. Even if you get a corner from it, still gives you a chance to pile on the pressure.
This last tip is probably a bit suicidal but I tend to use my keeper as a sweeper. He's excellent at coming out and making last ditch tackles. Plus I dont think he can get sent off when he clatters into an oncomming striker

Well I play literally *all* my matches as client, which makes it a little harder to pull of - even so, it only really serves as a tool to regain posession - you have to know what to do with the ball once you have it :D
For the record, and bearing in mind we are smack bang in the middle of a compo so am I **** as like giving away my secrets
- Master defence: i.e tackling...and not just fouling. Learn how to predict which way an opponent will turn, and time those sliding tackles to perfection. Timing the 'shrug' defence is also an essential skill to learn.
- Use your keeper. i.e treat him as one of your plays DON'T let the CPU do all the work ;)
- Know your players. I don't care how **** a player is, in terms of ability - plonk a big centre-forward up front, and learn how to cross the ball properly. Wing-play is an essential skill to learn, especially when lumbered with a ***** team :suspect:
- Tweak your formation. Not saying any more on this one :p
Go on - be a winner like Lou!
My tips:
1. Never pressure with your centre backs - always use defensive midfielders to hassle and win the ball back. Leave your centre backs as a total last resort. The amount of people who bring their defenders out only to see a totally unchecked player walking in behind them is staggering! :D
2. Avoid slide tackles at all costs - even I'm guilty of this and it will ALWAYS cost you against better players. Only use it if you 99% certain you will win the ball or you simply want to foul some git!
3. Avoid single tap O crosses and use double O for more directed crosses/Triple O for on the deck driven crosses.
4. Keep in your head what foot your attacker prefers - although sounds simple, trying to shoot on goal whilst balanced on your right side when he is left footed will see your shot go wide pathetically most of the time!
5. If you are on the ball and you see someone coming to tackle you, hold down R2 (Black Button on the Xbox pad) and move left or right. This shifts the ball to that side and makes the defender look a numpty :D

They can, ive played against people on more than one occasion who've had their keeper sent off when theve fouled the last man.....unfortunatly it lets the opposing team make a substition before the free kick/penalty so they can bring on a reserve and not have a defender in the net

As for tips, when wanting to head balls in front of goal, press black for a second as the cross comes in and back a couple of steps AWAY from the ball. This means your player will get their head over the ball and not not under it and send it over...
I had ISS and ISS Deluxe on the SNES, all 3 incarnations on the N64 then nothing until PES4. Played PES2 a couple of gamkes but preferred ISS98 on the N64. I love PES4 but thee's a couple of things I wish were carried over from ISS98 (such as the ability to hold through pass to make your players run on and time your release). Can't beleive the name of ISS has been cheapened wih the crap games of late :(

Always try and make sure you can see on screen who you are passing to (Wide camera helps)
As someone said earlier don't use sprint all the time - apart from making your players knackered easier, the control is much harder
ALWAYS dribble, and dont run in a straight line, doubling back on yourself can fool defenders
doubling back on yourself can fool defenders
As can letting go of the d-pad/analogue stick and pressing R1 to stop your player dead.
On free kicks press select to bring up 2 players. With 2 players if you press the right analogue stick down one of the 2 players passes to the other with a slight tap. You can then tun him into a better position for the cross/shot.
Tip for free kicks:

Dont worry about tactics and trick moves. The only tactic i ever use is counter attack mode.
Super cancel is most definately your best friend. It means i win the large majority of headers, pick up more looseballs and can make more unpredictable runs.
Know your team and stick to it. I use Inter all the time. I know which players are good for doing what jobs.
Practice running the keeper out. Doesnt sound like much but if you know when to run him out and when not to you can keep more clean sheets.
Listen to this and one day you could be as good as me :-)

I'm wierd with scoring. Some sets of games I can't stop scoring. Others, I struggle to score one and fluff shot after shot after shot.
Anyhoo, the best way to avoid that is as advancing on the keeper (keeper should be running out to you) hold L1 and tap shoot (release L1 at the same time as pressing shoot) and you'll chip it very the advancing keeper. The longer you hold shoot, the higher and further the lob will go...
Try not to be running when you lob as often you'll send the ball MILES over the cross bar in to the distant crowd behind the goal
Just checked super cancel - will begin using that baby tonite!

My most successful methods of scorring....
Draw keeper out then pass to open player for the clear shot
Double O style cross about 6 yards from line
As the keeper comes out tap square to roll a low one in
As the keeper comes out press square then X to dummy the keeper and go around him (this one's in the training options).
If the keeper comes right out (we talking 15 yards+) after a succesful throughball shoot but press R1 to do a low chip, less likely to go over the bar
Free kicks wise - if it's right on the 18 yard line a simple tap of O will result in a kick that'll go over the wall and just be right height for sneaking it in. Even had a few off the cross bar and ins with this one.
I am partial to the old fake shoot and round keeper goal - but only with good strikers and under no pressure.
If there is pressure I normally go for the conversion. :|

A quick tip for people .
IN the player settings change you player status to spectator (from blue man to grey) and then play the game in double speed.
I did this with my master league team and you can watch the team on the rader screen and see how the defence and shape of the team react and its sometimes usefull to see if and how arrows/positions/defence levels effect players and the team.

Players stats make a difference to all games, but nils is talking about the Master League which bears no refference to our online leages.
If you have a through ball to someone clear on a wing - use R2 to tap the ball in field to run towards the goal. In fact, mastering the R2 shove to the side is very effective.

Only time I've used it in the past is to stop my player from running after a ball that was going out for a throw to me. Very tricky trying to incoporate it into a through-ball situation.

Well the official update is the only that is essential but I'd always recommend the Wolf Evolution 2005 pack - you can find a link that I posted in the latter pages of the Season 3 thread or at PESFan forums. This will give you the massive overhaul of kits, balls, boots, advert boards, stadiums etc and makes the game a league ahead of its console cousins

cant believe noone has mentioned manual passing?? i only play the PS2 version but manual passing makes it sooo better. you have perfect control of the strength and direction of the passing, great for putting tasty thru balls and lobbing it over the defence for a fast striker.

The problem I've always had with manual passing is that it's just not quick enough. For first time one touch passing (which is generally how I like to play when I'm passing it around), it takes the manual dexterity of a monkey to pull everything off as you need to. The CPU is generally good enough to do what I want, when I want. It's fine if there's no-one pressuring you, but when does that happen!

I was practising with super cancel yesterday. Hit a long ball up, adriano turn and controls it., hit super cancel and whacked the volley in. Took about 30 attempts, but one day....one day!
A good tactic for having a good crack at goal from a free kick i've found is to first have someone who can curl the ball, shoot getting the bar right in the middle as usual (anything less and it hits the wall, anything more and it goes over) then hold L 1 and 2, and on the d pad back and the direction of curl you want. It slows the ball down a bit allowing it to curl right into the corner though it takes a bit of practice at first to get the position right.

I find the best way to tackle people (after months of playing this version) is to stand off them, keep players back and not dive in. Leave it to them to make the run past you which is usually very easy to block. This is opposed to how I used to defend when I used to run around like a headless chicken holding A and X all the time but all that leads you to is have players out of position.
One useful play is when you are back peddling and out of position and they are on the wing looking to put a ball through to a attacker on the penalty spot who will tap it passed the keeper with consumute ease if he gets it, try to get the computer to defender to mark up the player with the ball and YOU mark the area near person who the ball will go to. Try to get on the ball side of the attacker too as usually the ball will go to your player and then you can GET IT CLEAR

Thats one thing ive definately noticed is people seem scared of just hoofing a clearance. Its not pretty but its much better than giving away possesion.

No-one gives the donkey enough credit - so many times i've seen people try and pass/run out of defence, when a nicely crafted row-z clearance does the job and keeps the pressure off your defenders.

...and don't be scared to plough in with a good old fashioned sliding tackle (as long as it's not the last defender). I've won many a ball through breaking their legs :)

I'd go further than that - don't be afraid to play the 'ball over the top' at every opportunity, especially if you have nippy forwards and the opposition defence is quite small.
Do NOT try this against Milan though

Any tips for long range shooting ?
Make sure you've got a decent player before attampting the shot (ie don't try with one of the Neville's). Look at a players stats to determine who's more likely to get the shot on target.

Timing is everything - volleys can be very satisfying :D
Im struggling a bit with WE9 at the moment. I like to think im pretty good on PES4 (can often beat the comp 10-0 on 6* in a 10min game).
Ive scored some nice goals, but i just cant dribble at all, I get tackled every time. Its hard for me to get used to not using R2 for sidestep.
Im also finding it annoying how the ref seems to blow up at the slightest contact.

Yep. I didn't like that as well. Everyone else says that I will just have to adapt my game. Very hard when I have been fouling for so long. :(

What's the point of wanting to suss out a game so as you win 10-0 every time?
You have to actually pass the ball about in this game, rather than dribbling round everyone, which is going to make the online games all the more entertaining Im sure :D

I know what your saying but i was trying to say i was finding it a lot harder to suss, took about 1 day to do the same for PES4. ;)
But the thing is im not enjoying sussing out WE9. I can pass the ball around fine, but its things like control and touch im having trouble with. I read that pressing R1 and a direction helps but it doesnt seem to do anything for me!
In terms of dribbling i dont want to take on the whole team like you can do in PES4 but im finding it almost impossible to take on even 1 man with top players like Ronaldhinho, Henry etc. Even these players seem to take an age to change direction quickly and i get bodychecked straight away. This on 3*, but im thinking its probably best to jump straight in the deep end to 5* and unlock 6* asap.
Ive played loads against a mate and have enjoyed those games far more but unfortunately dont get much chance for 2 or more players.
Scored a lovely Becks freekick last night, about 25-30 yards at quite an angle in the absolute top corner. :notworthy

I think change of direction plays a part - I love Wright-Phillips for this reason - he changes direction, and then nobody can catch him
It's a VERY different game, and I'm quite glad of it tbh...
Yeah ive been playing a lot with England ( :gag: ) as Becks, Lamps and Gerrard can all smack them in from long range which seems to be my main source of goals at the moment.
I put SWP in place of Joe Cole as he can come inside and R2 bend them in the far corner quite well.

You wanna hit it when you not moving or striking in any directions........
I cant explain excatley what i mean but i find in pes4 if you hit super cancel then just strike it (no direction) it just flies stright at the goal corners .........
Of course you need a player with good skills

WOOT WOOT , BUMP :D
also i found out in pes 5 to curl free kicks you use the norma dpad or left analogue stick and not the r3(right anlouge) stick............
Man i thought my new ps2 pad was broken till i read you use the dpad or left analogue stick to add after curl on free kicks unlike pro evo 4
Is this like after hours where the bouncers are trying to kick you out but not getting anywhere?
If you're names not down, you're not coming in. Also nils you can curl freekicks in PES4 with the d-pad.
I said closing.
