Funny you say that. I've just been looking at getting one due to the labelling capability. I have been put off not by the price of the drive but the comparitive price of the media (and for some bizarre personal predjudice) only DVD+R being avalable.

However at £54 it appears a steal.

These appear to be good value but what put me off is the price and availability of the media, and also (to a lesser extent) the time it takes to print an image.

The problem is that HP have decided not to allow anyone else to develop lightscribe technology for the first 3 months of sale, thats why there isn't a wide range of media, but that agreement comes to an end the middle of next month... so the disc's should be more available and a cheaper price in the coming weeks...

My current burner is doing very well, but i had decided that my next one will be a lightscribe drive simply because i'd live a neater way to label my discs - personally i dont think the price of the drive is the main deciding factor - its the media.

Actually, I was tempted until I saw how slow it was.

5 minutes for a simple label, 20 for a picture. At those sort of speeds it's more of a party trick than a serious labelling device.

looks like they're halving the writing time for graphics but still ...

Compares very badly with about 30seconds for full colour CD on my canon ip4000

I still find the TDK mono printer ok for printing text onto any (non-printable even) CDR.

I'd be willing to buy a lightscribe drive assuming the media was reasonably priced and assuming the HP drive performed reasonably well at burning DVDs.
