Classic hollywood films

I'm getting a little tired of modern films so would like some advice about classic hollywood films from the 30/40/50's. I looking for films of a light-hearted nature, something for all the family.

Well with Christmas coming up you could do a lot worse than It's A Wonderful Life. It's bound to be on at some point over the festive period. Check your Xmas TV guide.

I'm currently ploughing through a load of Cary Grant DVDs to satisfy my fiancee's addiction, and can thoroughly recommend <I>His Girl Friday, Arsenic and Old Lace, North By Northwest</I> and the Criterion <I>Charade</I> - all have superb transfers (reference quality in a couple of cases) and most have great extras too.

Hardly original choices, but you can't look too far beyond <I>Casablanca</I> and <I>Citizen Kane</I>.

Mike are the above R2? I thought the R2 version of the above trilogy were crap. All the reviews I read said the transfers were appalling and some advised against a purchase.

I opted for the R1 Rio Grande the only one to have had a decent review.

also, TinTin was asking for some light-hearted films and even though I recommended some westerns as well, I wouldn't have classed - A Touch of Evil - as light-hearted and something for the whole family :D

Mea culpa. I got a bit carried away and forgot that it was DVDs I was recommending rather than films.

AVOID the R2 DVDs of

"Fort Apache"
"She Wore A Yellow Ribbon"
"Rio Grande"

They're terrible. I've reviewed them both on DVD Times.

I can highly recommend the German R2 versions of She Wore A Yellow Ribbon (called Der Teuffelshauptmann in German) and Fort Apache (called Bis Zum Letzten Mann in German). The German DVD of She Wore A Yellow Ribbon has a stunning transfer (truly reference quality). I believe the movie was restored a couple of years ago and Kinowelt used that restored print for the DVD. As a very interesting extra the DVD features an hour long interview with John Ford.
Fort Apache also has a decent transfer althoug lesser than SWAYR. Both DVD's have the original soundtrack and subtitles can be switched off.
For Rio Grande I can recommend the R1 version put out by Republic.

I agree with you about the R1- Rio Grande, although I've only watched the first 4 chapters what I've seen of the transfer so far is superb quality.

Thanks but I should have said not Amazon.de Fort Apache is nearl £16 before postage. I got the R1 Rio Grande for just over £8 all in. Guess I'll have to wait until there's some kind of deal or hope there's a decent release in R1/2.

Fort Apache is 8,56 Pounds before postage.

She Wore A Yellow Ribbon is indeed nearly 16 Pounds but it would be well spent ;).
Warner will release SWAYR in the first half of 2002 on R1. No doubt they will use the restored print. Although I doubt it, I hope it will get the special edition treatment. Still gonna keep the R2 for the interview with Ford though.
