... should I get for my Dad for Christmas? He loves westerns, especially John Wayne.

What I want to know is what films have a good DVD release and which region to get it on.

:) :) :)

The Serchers and Rio Bravo. Two of Waynes best and good DVD's as well. Both can bought for under £8 in the budget Warner Bros sections on a lot of sites like Play, Under 18 etc...

True Grit is available on R1. Not much in the way of extras, but a decent anamorphic transfer.

If you do not have 'The Alamo'R2/4,then that is a must buy.The transfer is simply awesome, and the film is just timeless.Do not buy the R1 version,as it is grainy.Costs only about £9 delivered from Australia. www.dvdstop.com.au

I'd like to second the recomendations for The Searchers and Rio Bravo. Both are superb films, The Searchers easily the greatest western starring John Wayne, if not the greatest western full stop.

I know it aint a western but the longest day, IMHO one of John waynes finest films. i would like to see more john on DVD as my dad likes him too. sands of iwa jima and she wore a yelow ribbon are amounst some id like to see make it to DVD. also the alamo should get released too with a good set of extras, possibly some documentaries on the event itself would be good to see on this disc.

Red River is quite cheap too and a superb film; I'll second The Searchers, very cheap on R2 from Play, good transfer and some decent extras, if you like taking the mick out of Gig Young...
