The important features of the machine itself are:

You'll find this player and more info / pictures here, but remember to log in to get your price. http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acatalog/dvdplayer.html#a399
I looked at a number of DVD players this Autumn ready for the December market, and this machine struck me due to it's build quality, willingness to play back all CDR/RW and DVDR/RW, and of course because it plays DivX Xvid and MP3 in addition to all the normal formats.
Should make a few people very happy this Christmas

Can it play packed DIVXs? Right now I have to unpack nearly everything for my Mum!
Steve, how many characters in the filenames can the On screen menu display? I have all my MP3's formatted like:
"01 - John Lennon - Imagine.mp3"
And when I played these in my girlfriends divx/dvd player all the menu showed was "01 - John L" which is a pain. Can this one display full filenames?

I think what he means is can it playback Packed Bitrate Divx files as lots of players can't but some newer players can.
If you go to www.divxtest.com you can download a test CD so you can put the player through its paces and see what it can and can't play! Will be doing this myself as soon as I receive the player!
I don't expect it to play everything, but as long as it plays back most of my DivXs / Xvids then it'll do me!
does the remote control have a volume control ?

Tempted by one of these but would like to know about the reliability. My mate has a divX player and it only plays around 60% of his divx files and even they often have strange faults like out of sync audio from time to time. How good are divx/xvid players these days?
Just ordered two of these lil' beauties.
Are these firmware upgradeable? More importantly, are they any good?

Denver electronics have made a few firmware upgrades available for other / older DVD models in the past it seems, one in particular was to fix subtitles for divx. There are no upgrades available currently for this model but that doesn't mean there won't be!
Mine actually arrived today! :D
So far it has played everything I have put in it except divx in OGM file containers (could be added in a future firmware upgrade??? Time will tell!). It has only struggled with 1 particular xvid where the sound went out of synch and kept stuttering - although in all cases the picture remained clear and didn't get any bad artifacting, but this is going to be expected with even the most expensive & "better" Divx players with some problem files. Have tried about 10 DivX files / Xvids so far. Im happy enough with it for what it is playing so far. Anything it doesn't want to play I can always fire up on my media PC!
Was also multiregion out of the box!
Any chance of a special for a HDD version that does Divx/ Xvid playing?
Does 'multi-region compatible' mean its multi region out of the box or is there some remote hack for it?

Steve, any players on the horizon that have DIVX/XVID playback via a USB hard drive? (like the Lidl Targa, with a bit of a hack job!).
DVD-Recordable & HDD would be useful too! (am I asking too much here!)
How is subtitle support on this player (in Divx/Xvid playback mode) please ?

Don't know. Tried to download DivXTest but it failed. Will try to find and play one tonight.

I found a remote hack for it which works and gets you into the region menu. I didn't need it though as the player was already set to region 0.

One annoying thing is you can't seem to turn off the blue light, it stays on even when the player is in standby mode like some sort of night light. I haven't read the instruction manual through so it may say something about it in that!
Watched an Xvid the whole way through last night. Picture and sound was perfect the whole way through, and no synch problems.
Picture quality wise, I haven't hooked it up to the RGB scart yet, as my freeview is currently going into the only scart on my tv. Its currently going into composite as its just my bedroom dvd player, and im not too bothered about picture quality as its only a 21" TV. It's main purpose is so I can watch divx & dvd's in bed, and so far it is doing its job well.
As for the Divx side of things, when loading a few files it comes up "Qpel" on the display then disappears, so it seems to support divx that need this codec.

If you have a laptop hooked up to the TV then why do you need a separate Divx player? Your laptop with the correct codecs installed will playback everything you'll ever need?
OK, it might be me being crazy but I just login using the forums username and password, as shown in the first thread and it only takes 40p off :(

May have spoke to soon is anyone else getting lip-sync problems with this player ?
Only had lip-synch problems on 1 file so far. Just give a quick rewind of the file for 2 secs and hit play again and it usually sorts it. For the most everything has been playing back perfectly.
I emailed the manufacturers who say there isn't likely to be a firmware upgrade that will give OGM or Nero digital support as the chipset doesn't support it - Oh well, its playing every thing I need so im ok with that.
Also on the blue LED side of things, it is hardware enabled and there is no option to turn it off at all - permanent marker may have to be taken to it. Or indeed a dry wipe marker, that way my warranty won't be invalidated!
Can't complain though for the price, but im just miffed at why the manufacturers do stupid things like this???
did anyone else's seem as it was a return?
The box had had a couple of scrapes, the bubblewrap around the remote had been pretty much completely popped, the remote control some very faint scratches, the sellotape holding the plastic bag around the player itself had been peeled off and resealed, and to top it all off the display of the dvd player had finger prints and indeed there was some dust on the dvd player. It genuinely seems as if someone has used it for a week or two, returned it, and then svp have fobbed it off to me.

Ive had lip-sync problems on 2 retail dvds.Ive been trying it over the weekend and most seem ok will try it over this week to see if the problem occurs again.SVP have offered to replace or refund but i like the player and would prefer to test it further. The blue light is distracting i was going to stick some blue-tack over it to lessen the hypnotic effect

well my experience with SVP has been quite different.
I've used them on and off for years and have no complaints (well once when the couriers had played football with the box and damaged several jewel cases - but they were replaced without any trouble) but getting a RMA for this dvd player almost rivals ebuyer's system: from being told the serial number is not in the correct format (i gave them the code in the exact format as it's printed on the back of the dvd player and on the sticker on the box), to being asked to confirm things that have already been confirmed.
All the while being told it's "almost impossible" or there is "no way" the dvd player is in the condition i described. Well i have absolutely no reason to make it up given that i'm after a replacement (an unused one) anyway and as a result am having to wait a week and wait in for a day for a courier too.
The DVD player i received had most definitely been opened up and used before - i guess the moral of the story is get out the camera as soon as any queries arrive regarding the state of the goods and then they won't be able to deny it.

Hi BS7
Sorry to hear that the RMA has not been straighforward. We are usually 99% helpful and 1% watching that the occasional customer isn't "trying it on". It sound like we've got the balance wrong in your case. We are certainly not one of the companies that tries to make the RMA process so awkward that people give up! (I'm told there are a few of those around!)
Have this now been sorted? If not can you give me the ticket number and I'll have a look at the email.

Just ordered three of these for christmas presents. One question to any owners of this player regarding the Divx and Xvid playback. If I burn a DVD full of Xvid Movies, does it play them in order? also what if the Movies are in sub folders does it still work? any answers to these questions will be garetfully received.
Thanks

1. It plays them in alphabetical order. For multiple xvids files (episodes) I usually rename them to 01, 02, 03, 04, 05 etc....
2. I place all my divx files in subfolders and it works fine.

Just one thing though, just before my Player starts to play an AVI file, it makes a strange scratching/rubbing sound just before the "initialising" text comes on...anyone else???
