View Full Version : First Blu-Ray Disc Mastered! 1080P!
According to this site

Sony has mastered their first Blu-Ray movie and is shipping it out for testing. What's most noticeable is the 1920x1080 resolution. The good news is that it appeares to be 1080P! Sony refer to 1080P as Full High Definition. 720P is impressive, but looking forward to seeing 1080P!
Your views?
Yeah, but Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle?!?!
1920x1080 Lucy Liu? I'm not complaining.

Thanks for the post Garath! 1080p has long been rumored and the PS3 output seemed to provide more fuel and this is even better.
Is it possible it could be 1080i? Of course even if the disc is encoded at that resolution the players have to be capable at outputting that

Is HDMI upto the bandwidth requirements though? I've seen reports that it can quite happily handle 720p and 1080i (which use the same amount of bandwidth), but 1080p uses nearly all of it, thus not really leaving much for the HD audio...
I think some HDMI needs a firmware upgrade but it is capable. The PS3 does 1080p out over HDMI

I think in the latest specs, HDMI supports 1080P now.
Camaj - At first I was concerned it was 1080I, but I is only going to be used for Live stuff and stuff shot in Interlaced. However, in the press release they refer to it as Full High Definition. If you look at Sony's HD press releases for hardware such as Plasmas, they refer to the new Full High Definition as being 1080P.
That's what I thought Garteth, but I wanted to make sure since 1920 x 1080 could be interlaced
Just bumping this up as I have been sent this latest info which may be of interest to some http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=4820
Says that Amazon.com (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect-home/thedvdforums-20) have started some HD DVD listings, but whilst there are some dates [earliest being 28 March with a U2 disc] there is still no pricing.
Note also that there is speculation that initial discs will not in fact be High Def, rather just SD with the space filled with loads of extras etc! :nono:
Seemingly too, Blu-Ray is taking an early lead in the number of backers...
We shall see.

which means the current crop of hdmi stuff is no good! I already knew that new hardware would be needed once HDMI audio came along, which already was a damn annoying situation...why not get the damn thing right in the first place!

And this is going to be even worse than a new cable - Now you'll have to know whether a player/tv/amp has HDMI v1.0, 1.1 or 1.2 - expect sales staff the country over to have no clue...
