View Full Version : Please recommend DVD-R's !
Hi SVP, I have a Panasonic DVD Recorder DMRES10 and am looking to buy a spindle of -R's and possibly -RW's. Can you please tell me which ones work with this machine if you know ? Was looking at the Datwrite but not sure if these work.

Hi Warney
The TDK discs are particularly good value for money at the moment.
{DV 3264** TDK Branded (8x) DVD-R in Spindle Tubs of 25

{DV 3337** TDK (4x) DVD-RW in Spindle Tubs of 10

Thanks Steve. Any thoughts on the datawrite Red's or Rivision ? Cheers. (Both *8)

They are cheaper but not as high in quality.
Personally I think those 2 discs are excellent value for money, but the Panasonic DVD recorders have a reputation for being a little bit fussy on media, so the TDK may be a "safer" choice.
You may want to try 1 spindle of the cheaper discs, and if theyy do work to a standard you are happy with in the your Panasonic, then you can buy more in the future.
Steve
Thanks Steve, I'll stick with the ones suggested then ! I will also be buying a hard case (DJ) in the same order. Is there any chance I can buy a single disc of the other ones to try them out to check out quality etc ? Many thanks.

TYG02 from SVP.co.uk
are the only way to go. Most other dvd-r have severely limited lifespans
and you be lucky if you can copy them after 6 months. The reds are very poor.
Just about to place an order, is it possible to have the order delivered to work and not home address ? Many thanks.

Hi Steve
Looking to buy a dual format DVD Recorder Xmas/New Year.
Am I right in assuming it doesn't matter what speed discs you use?
Hopefully you'll do a special offer on the Liteon 5006 soon.:D
I noticed that ***** have it reduced it to £99.99 now.

Hi TCS
The ***** price is very good.
I shouted at Liteon last week for a price that would allow me to equal it.
I've put a new price of £109.99 on the site, but I can't do £99 :(
You will have the benefit of SVP's service should anything go wrong, but only you can tell if that's worth the extra £10 compared to ***** :)
Just about any low speed media seems to work fine in it.

Thanks for the reply Steve
I have found your service excellent in the past so no problems there.
Tough decision as ***** are just down the road from me and I'd have to pay around £8-10 to send it back to you if anything went wrong with it.
Maybe I'll wait until you can get Liteon to allow you to drop it below the magical £100 barrier :)
I reckon this time next year you'll be able to pick up dual format DVD Recorders for £50...or less!
Placed an order today, thanks for your help. I received an email but no confirmation of what I had ordered or where I can check the progress of the order. Is there anywhere on the site I can check please or will I get an email when the products are sent ? Cheers

What DVD-R Printable do you recommend?
I have an NEC 2510, therefore 8x max discs. I am concerned to get discs which will be reliable as some of these will be used to provide a wedding DVD which need both to work properly and to last.
Thanks in advance for your reply.

If you are after Premium Quality, go for the Panasonic 8x discs. They use the Taiyo Yuden dye. Thanks to SVP these discs are now only marginally more expensive than other brands. TY are the worlds best at DVD-R discs for recording quality, reliability and longevity.

I presume that from the SVP website these are:
{DV 3358** Panasonic Printable (8x) DVD-R (excellent Taiyo Yuden dye) in Spindle Tubs of 50. SVP Price: £14.70 / Euro 21.82 inc VAT.
Equivalent Retail Price Per Disc: 29.4p
How would they compare to these:
{DV 3220** Datawrite Titanium 'Full Face' Printable (8x) DVD-R in Spindle Tubs of 50. SVP Price: £9.49 / Euro 14.09 inc VAT.
Equivalent Retail Price Per Disc: 19.0p
Although over £5 a tub more I guess in reality for the sake of 10p extra per disk if the Panasonics can be relied upon as you say they are then it is not worth short-changing. However, I guess for producing DVDs for preview purposes then it may be more economical to buy a second tub of cheaper non-printables.
Thanks for your prompt advice on this Gareth.

The Titanium 8x are CMC MAG or TTG02 dye's depending on the spindle you get. Personally I wouldn't touch CMC with a barge pole, but for some people they are fine. I use to be fine with Ritek dye discs, but I learnt my lesson and since the move to Taiyo Yuden dye, I wish I had moved earlier.
If you are looking at saving some money, try looking at discs with the MCC dye, which tend to be pretty good. The 16x version of the titaniums you were asking about are the MCC dye.
Since this is SVP's forum, they are probably the best people to reply to your msg. However, I thought i'd try offer some help.

Thanks Gareth - I really appreciate your feedback.
I think for sure I will get a spindle of the higher grade Panasonic discs. Following Gareth's comments, if anyone from SVP can add anything and also provide advice on a good budget disc to go for (max 8x) as outlined above, that would be appreciated.

Surely that is an exaggeration?
I have been writing DVDs for a little over a year now. Stuck with Ritek G04 for most of the first 6 months and since then Datawrite Titaniums and Bulkpaks using either CMC or MCC dye. I have yet to find a disc which I have written that subsequently became unplayable. Admittedly many of the year old discs might not have been used for a while - but certainly there are a handful which get watched quite a bit still (kids programs).
I would hate to think everything would suddenly get 'lost' that soon. Important ones in many cases have been backed up to a different manfacturer or different batch disc and the topmost ones are kept on my hard drive too.
Should I go out and buy 2-300 TY discs just to back this lot up before I lose anything?
