View Full Version : Canon IP4200 Ink
Hi Guys,
Not overly urgent at the moment as i have a set of canon original inks in it, but is it likely you'll have compatible ink carts for a canon ip4200 printer in any time soon?
Also, are you in any position to get originals? I'm keep to keep a £100 printer in good condition and don't use it overly (I have a long suffering laserjet to give real batterings to!)

Hi Wishy
Jet Tec are forecasing IP4200 compatibles for Jan/Feb 2006. Originals....doubtful to be honest, but it depends partly on Canons / Epsons attitute to compatible cartridges in the future.

I'm in exactly the same boat - may have to go for an Epson after all

Don't Epson do the same thing as well?
I'd prefer Canon over Epson any day, but it is a shame they've chipped their carts, as its always good to get cheap blacks, if not colours.
the Epson R220 is £60 in Asda atm and the compatibles are available from SVP. If anyone can recommend an equivalent Canon which takes compat's then I'm all ears :)

Apparently there are patent, copyright and plain difficulty issues in copying Canon's new thinktank ink tank chip technology. So I beleive that this is where the delay lies.
You can refill the tanks, but you loose all ink monitoring (and letting the ink run dry could burn out the inkheads) and you have to press the resume button on the printer every time you print.

With those you need to take the chip off original carts and put them on the compatible carts, it will treat these new carts are being refilled and so the printer will still disable ink level monitoring etc.
you're better off buying a really decent refill kit and doing it yourself tbh people, I got a ip4200 for a friend and was under the illusionj that the clones would be out before the originals had ran out, obviously not...
left me a little red faced, so I went out and bought them a Crab ink refill kit for the ip4200 and the results are spectacular! real easy to refill and cost effective, think it works out at £1.70 a refill per cartridge which is a far sight better than £8 an original!
As has been said before, you do lose all ink monitoring capabilities and i'm sure it mentioned something along the lines of it knew that it had been refilled and the warranty was now void!
Anyways, link to the refill ink is here (http://cartridge-supersaver.co.uk/cartridge/KB12C-530-Color-inkjet-refill-kit.html), I used them a couple of times now and they have been excellent, real quick delivery and they where using special delivery for me, so well insured!
hope this helps until proper cloned carts are out :)

Jet Tec are advertising a complete set of refills: http://jettec.co.uk/products_canonrefill.asp
Does anyone know where this is available to buy? I might just go for the aforementioned Crab refills but it'd be nice to have an alternative.
Jet Tech only have 4 colours in the pack when its a 5 colour cart. They're sharing the photo black with the text black. Probably means the quality of the photos won't be as good. When i first got the printer i thought "two blacks, thats stupid", but there is a clear difference in the results.
While I were after compatibles, as i were forever cleaning my epson even under original carts, I don't think i'd go the compatibles route as i've had no clogging or hassle of any kind with the canon originals.

Steve, Would you be able to stock original ink at reasonable prices? Current cheapest are http://www.inkraider.co.uk/ and 7DayShop (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=530&gid=6083&id=30372)

I bought this printer a few months ago, ignorant of the fact that compatibles were not on the horizon. After seeing lots of other ink brands on offer for the iP4000 and the like, I just assumed they would be coming.
What's the big obstacle compared with the previous generation (3000 / 4000 / 5000)? I know there is is something to do with a chip, but previous Epsons I've had used chips in the cartridge and compatibles were on the market.
Help - I don't want to shell out £35+ everytime I want a complete new set of cartridges. Where are the compatibles?

The difference is that Epson went after companies making compatibles and failed (tried to use the DMCA), whereas Canon went after a company and was successful (used patent violation).
Canons chip does not prevent you using refills, CIS or taking the chips of real carts and using them on compatibles. The only thing you lose is the ink level monitor and you have to agree to termination of your warranty.
A non-patent violating chip is said to have been designed but it can't be made at cost effective price due to the small size required.
You can make a CIS for the ip4200 or 5200 by modifiying one designed for an ip4000 or making you own DIY CIS.

No proper compatibles still. I'm stunned that there still aren't any proper compatibles, but there don't seem to be any

Nope - its not!

Has anyone tried the chip swap method yet ?
At 5.99 a cart, you may as well buy originals tbh! None are offering the huge savings you would see on an epson, for example. But then, epsons seem to spend most their ink cleaning their heads and i still had clogs...

Exactly why I'll never buy Epsons again - would rather pay the extra and have reliable ink as with Canon or HP!
Compatbiles would be nice for this tho....

Yes I know what you mean about Epsons and head cleaning. I always had Epsons before now and was pleased with the quality, but living in a hot environment caused me to have to clean the heads endlessly for even text print jobs.
I have just returned to the 4200 after it having been left in hot and humid conditions for nearly two months and it printed perfectly first time (no cleaning).
I don't print tons anyway, so will bide my time until proper chipped compatibles appear. If I have to buy some originals I'll just have to grin and bear it.

Hi all
I bought one of the new Jettec refill kits for the Pixma 4200 and am very happy with the results, the only problem being you don't get enough black ink. I think the best thing to do is to keep the specific refill for the small photo pigment cartridge and just order a canon black refill for the larger text print cartridge.
Also if any of you want to print Cd/Dvd's to the hub (as the pixma leaves about an 8mm gap) you can. I downloaded Acoustica CD label print (there's a free trial) and it can fix that for you. Costs $21.99.

Any news on chipped compatibles or any compatibles that will actually give you an ink level reading?
I'd be interested in this too - for my iP5200 which uses the same carts
