Hi guys
We are working on a new website.
www.svp.co.uk/index.php
Most of it is completed, and it's now gone into a live test. That means that orders can now be placed on it although there are still some improvements that we know we need to make.
The reason we allow it to go "live" when we know it's still not 100% finished is because we want feedback from people who regularly shop on the web while we carry on putting the finishing touches.
Most of the big changes are actually for the benefit of SVP when we are controlling stock and processing orders. The actual look of the website and the layout has been designed to be quite similar to the current site so as not to alienate regular customers, but you will notice a few nice new touches.
I'll repeat the fact that this website IS LIVE. One of the functions that is not yet live is a small discount for DVDForums members, but we will do that in the very near future.
Constructive feedback appreciated :)

Can't you make the site "stretch" to fit any resolution?
Just seems a lot of wasted space on the product listings page :D
The default of a limited number of items per page makes comparisons very difficult. Is this really needed?
The option to change to "all" isn't in a place you automatically look
There seems to be less control, for example, set things to all, go to the ink cartidges section and you get flooded with cartridges

When looking for discs I like to find ones with a dye from a certain manufacturer usually TY. But when using the brands index (http://www.svp.co.uk/brands.php) the TY option misses the discs by Panasonic, Plextor and Verb. Just a little niggle ;)

Please keep the suggestions coming. I'll be going through them all and discussing them with the web team shortly.

steve sent you an email mate.
I've just looked at the list of DVD-r (printable) and like someone else mentioned - the Panasonic don't appear.
After looking at the DVds I then looked at the PC peripherals - but the sort order was left at the previous setting - in this case "Pack price - high to low". The sort by box should be cleared - or preferably set to an initial default like Alphabetical.
I can't change the sort order from the previous setting. (unless pack price is a valid sort order for monitors)
Just looked at the new site. Unfortunately the dual layer dvd's are still £3.75. Pity really. Was hoping the new site meant a bit of sanity with them :-)
I would say you need to have a think about the brands page - There are too many of them so it all merges into one. Probably better to have a search box or a drop down menu or something...
Having said that it does seem more intuitive than the old site
Oh and I can't believe you have time for this at this time of year!!! You must be nuts!

 Gotta have the Panasonics, they are just
BAD THINGS
Brands? Maybe for jeans but for DVDs I think that's way over the top.
I liked the old style page where it had everything on one page eg if I was looking for DVD-Rs I could see everything on one page and CTRL-F a page search. Now I get "1 of 10" which sounds very time consuming and I can't use CTRL-F without viewing all 10 pages.
"Recordable DVDs". That's a technical description [that doesn't apply to some blanks discs]. "Blank DVDs" would look better.
GOOD THINGS
"Log in". Will this really work for all customers? That's good if yes.
Where's all the Google ads asking me to leave your site and spend money at Amazon (who sell what you sell and much more and have free delivery (I never understood you having Amazon adverts! Crazy))? Will you be renting out all this empty space to Google? :D

Apart from the comments above it looks fine.
I think SVP is a great company but as I always say when going through your checkout, don't change too much and keep it simple.
Good luck with the new look anyway :)
Don't really like it, can't put my finger on it exactly. On a side note: will you still be able to get a dvdforums discount?

The lack of the "STORE SECTIONS" list down the left is a big mistake IMO. Often I'll visit to buy a few disks and have a browse though other categories just to see whats there. The new site has only the main category headings in a drop-down, so not only do I need to actively click the dropdown before I see any enticements, I only see 8-9 generically titled sections.
Because of this I'd be surprised if the lack of the full list visible all the time doesnt result in the average sale being for less items/value.
Equally odd is that you now have much more screen real estate to play with because the list and adverts are missing and yet in the product list the type is slightly smaller and the pictures much smaller. I can fit the product list 3 1/2 times across my screen (1920 x 1280)
Its also slower to load pages than the old site.
All that said, I'll still be using svp :D
will you still be able to get a dvdforums discount?
The answer has already been given in an earlier post.

Hi guys
A few more changes and refinements are in place at the new website.
I particularly like the "sort by unit price" facility when you have a page of similar items. i.e seach for Taiyo Tuden CDR then put them in order of cheapest disc first or if you prefer cheapest pack first.
Anyway, it's your thoughts that matter so more comments / feedback from you appreciated.

I'm starting to like it alot more now. One thing you could do, is when you list the items on a page, the images are not proper size. I've noticed the large pictures are simply resized by the browser to show a thumbnail. The trouble is you get scaling and it doesn't look very professional. Indivisual thumbnails for the search page and then full size images on the view item page would be much better.
The site is looking very nice. However, we all know that this new site isn't a major plus point for alot of people. I (like others) order from you because since December 2001, you have kept the excellent customer service every time. Despite your growth, your service hasn't dropped at all. Something that not many companies seem to be able to do.

I see they're back! Is this not commercial suicide?
I see these Google adverts everywhere now (selling everything from dildos to pirated software and DVDs) and Google must be making a fortune.
What I don't understand is how these adverts seem to tempt customers away from the originating sites even though they sell similar stuff.
Do SVP make a lot of cash from these ads? That can be the only way I think it's a good idea.

Hi Gerrard
We are (IMO) the best in our field at what we do. We offer a range of products, advice and experience in blank media and associated products that no other company can match...including Amazon.
But...(and it's a big But), the range of products that Amazon offer from books to blenders...from Beatles to Bob the Builder is simply huge. They offer reasonable prices and decent service and I'm happy to recommend them. They pay websites like ours a percentage of each sale when people click through from our site and even provide us with a list of what items were purchased so I can see if they are products that SVP sells.
All things considered I think that the relationship works well. I'm comfortable sending SVP customers to companies like Amazon, CD Wow and Dell where they will most likely buy products that SVP don't supply, and SVP will earn a small income from it.
The adverts on our website are nothing to do with Google (although we have used them in the past). Amazon run their own affiliate network and the others are via a couple of companies that specialise in running affiliate schemes.
I appreciate your concern for us loosing our customers though. I was quite touched, but I think that overall it works out OK for us :)
Steve
I like the fact you can now link to specific items :) This is a massive benefit, as in the past people have asked me - via email, msn or whatever - what blank DVDs do I need? Or what CDRs are the cheapest/best? And Ive had to point them to the site and direct them to what they are looking for, but this has put a few newbies off who dont want to buy the wrong item.

One minor quibble. When browsing all the DVD discs by type the old page showed the media code of each of the discs. Now you have to click "More Info" to find out the code. Preferred the old way TBH ;)
Also, regarding more info - Make more info come up if I click on the name of the product, as well as the more info link.

Also on more info - List ordering seems a major problem, especially with multi-page lists. For instance, click on Recommended by SVP, when you look at more info on an item and then go back, the list has been reordered. This makes it difficult to work your way through a list systematically as everything keeps jumping around. This is even worse when on page 2, because now some items that you havent scrolled down to yet have been reordered and will not appear when you click through to page 3 and you will miss them. You can right click and open more info in a new page but really this should either be the default or the list sequence should not change.
Cheers!

AAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! This has just happened to me... I was looking at the ink cartridges, and after choosing "more info" clicked back, and the ink at the top of the column was a different one. Tried again, and a different one again!
I hate to say this, but I much preferred the older website (although no matter what your website looks like, I'll still order from it, even if it takes 10 times longer :D )
Also, on the payment page, it states that Issue Number is a required field, even if you choose VISA... I left it empty and it still worked (I hope!).

sorry but I spent near a grand with this company last year but the way this new site works is annoying me

Excellent to see that the media codes for blank dvds are now clearly shown in the listings. Good work!!
I'd move the add to basket/quantities bit nearer the top of the product listings (perhaps to the top, inline with the photo and title?) When you know exactly what you want it can be annoying having to scroll through a looong listing.
Other than that looks superb to me, good job guys :)

Some products appear to be missing. For instance I can't find the Amaray superclear slim DVD cases.

Keep the suggestions coming guys.
I may not discuss each individual issue here, but it's all being noted and discussed at SVP.

I've already said but seriously tho Steve, the thumbnails on the site look awful and you card hardly see em. I'd rather be able to use those old site as it gets on my nerves.
Hey Steve, I just signed up my own account, forgot to read this thread so forgot to check for any discount - Anyway, found a bug, after registering and going through the checkout, it brings me back to the "We have Moved" page and then when I go to the main page my basket is still filled with the stuff I had just ordered.
Anyway, any chance of applying forums discount to the order I just put through, if not no worries, should have checked here first:
