I've just watched Zulu which I thoroughly enjoyed, and I've also really enjoyed Lawrence of Arabia and Spartacus. Are there any other classic films in a similar vein to these? There's a certain fascination about 1000's of real actors rampaging across the screen. :D

If you can't tell what film the quote below is from, you have missed one hell of a classic :D

If you haven't seen "El Cid" and "Fall Of The Roman Empire", both of them are essential viewing. Both of them, in my opinion, better than "Spartacus" and "LOA" and ample evidence that Anthony Mann was one of the great Hollywood directors.

Thought El Cid was good, but definitely nowhere near the magnificance of Lawrence of Arabia...

I'll get me coat... :D

I'd leave your coat where it is if I were you. Although it may make me shake my head in despair, the awe in which "Lawrence of Arabia" is held suggests that a lot more people agree with you than they do with me. I think it's pretty mediocre myself, but that's merely my opinion. Compared to "Zhivago" it's quite good, but then so is "Confessions of a Window Cleaner".

It doesn't help that I can't abide anything David Lean had anything to do with after his masterpieces "Brief Encounter" and "Great Expectations" - both films which are as good as so many people reckon "Lawrence" is, and probably better. That he never got to adapt my favourite Conrad novel "Nostromo" is a constant source of delight for me.

Anthony Mann, on the over hand, is a truly great director who made more good films in ten years than Lean made in an entire career. Anyone agree with me or am I shouting in the wilderness yet again ?

Probably shouting in the wilderess, but I have to admit that I have a soft spot for Mann. My particular favourites being, The Man from Laramie, The Glenn Miller Story and God's Little Acre and The Fall of the Roman Empire (now that's how an epic should be done)
