Nope, what your Dad has bought is an upscaling DVD player and it isn't HD at all. All it will do is take the standard definition DVD's and scalue the picture up to a HD resolution and output that to your HD ready TV. It will not add any extra detail however. The only benefit you will get is if the scaler in the DVD player is better than the scaler in the TV as the TV has to scale everything to a HD format anyway as thats the resolution of the screen.

So think of it as getting the very best out of standard definition discs rather than high definition.

Although it does ironically seem that the best upscaling DVD player on the market is the new Tosh A1 HD-DVD player. So if you want the best from your DVDs then that's the one to go for.

Has it even been released here yet?

No, but you can import the machine for around £350ish notes. When one is launched here I'll be very tempted.

Is that the proper name of the machine? The Toshiba A1 HD-DVD Player? If your saying it's not a HD player there's going to be a lot of people tricked by that title.

There's the Tosh HD-A1 and the Tosh HD-XA1 currently available in the US. They're both HD-DVD players but they also play standard definition R1 DVDs and upscale them to 720p or 1080i.

The HD-XA1 certainly makes my standard def R1s look better than when played through my Pioneer DV-575A but I'm hearing that it doesn't do as good a job as a specialised upscaling DVD player.

Hope that helps,

Theres also a 3rd. Same tosh player as the A1 but in black I think ..:D

Its a clunky ol box too , basicaly a decent spec PC with a HD-DVD drive in a HC box. Just wait a few more months fo other players..

Thats a D1 - which is an exclusive to Walmart.
There's also an RCA (or Thomson over here) player out soon, but thats just a rebadged Toshiba as well.
