Still not overly impressed with Sky Movies in HD. Doesn't seem any better than anything I already have on DVD anyway....still I'll check it out.

Well worth watching though - was one of the better films I have seen in recent memory.

I think HD allows you to spot bad camera work alot easier, watched king athur and was quite underwhelmed, mind you I had a freeview box before HD so anythings an improvement on that.

I don't have Sky HD myself, but from what i've seen the pixelation is awful. Overcompressed to hell!

The BBC HD channel is fantastic as is Nat Geo and to a lesser extent Discovery.

I watched some of Kill Bill on Sky Movies HD late last night and it is without a shadow of a doubt no better then slapping on the DVD, perhaps even with the DVD being marginally better.

I watched a bit of Shrek 2 the other day in HD and it was totally stunning, i know it's cgi but it still looked fantastic.

Anyone see this? How did it look (as I don't have Sky HD)?

I recorded it to see if it was any good and a cursory glance gave me the impression that it wasn't all that when compared to the DVD.

Saying that, I recorded Spider-Man 2 in HD and that was very good, although the DVD isn't really top notch quality anyway.

Any critisisms at all of the new screen now it's bedded in a little?

Always interesting to hear from REAL owners about any ownership issues.

I've never seen a Plasma and a LCD side by side with things like HD and also Xbox360 type stuff.

While I don't own it myself, having sampled SKY movies HD now I'm a little unimpressed - the naughty rips of US television movie streams look far better.

Is this related to bandwith again? The HD titles I've sampled run around the 15mb/sec mark for an 1080i transmission - how would the bitrate of a SKYHD movie feed compare?

I recorded Sin City last night to give it the full eyes wide open verdict this morning.

I was absolutely....

AMAZED!

The monochromatic effect was jaw-dropping. The sharpness was absolute killer. It genuinely felt better than watching a DVD in terms of quality.

I was genuinely in awe. Never seen the film before, so don't know how it looked in the cinema, but I can tell you that this is one hell of a step up in quality from SD.

It was as good, if not better, than the high quality HD you get on BBC HD during the preview hours.

Very, Very, Very impressed.

EDIT: And that was through Component input. Haven't got a DVI adapter to connect to my Dell 26" yet. If it gets any better than this, I'll be gobsmacked.

Are all films on Sky's HD movie channels actually true HD? I understood many of the HD channels were still showing a lot of upscalled content, though I don't know if that's the case with the movie channels.

A couple of questons -

1 - how do you record? onto a dvd recorder / hard drive ? Which make ?
2 - if so, how much space does a HD film take up
3 - when playing back from a hard drive recorder how does it manage to output 'true HD' as opposed to upscaled SD ?

I was under the imrpession if you recorded HD to a hard drive recorder it only captured it then played back in SD or upscaled SD....If it was capable of capturing 720p then it would be the first HD recorder on the market...

I think these are some of the questions I need answered.

I f I thought a HD recorder could capture true HD then play back true HD I'd be happy...

Please clarify matey :notworthy

I'm another one who was very impressed with this - way better quality and detail levels than the DVD, in my opinion.

Weird how different people see it in different ways though - for example, I thought Return of the King was pretty average quality, and not really much of an improvement over DVD, but lots of people on AV Forums really rated it as being fantastic quality.

Are all films on Sky's HD movie channels actually true HD? I understood many of the HD channels were still showing a lot of upscalled content, though I don't know if that's the case with the movie channels.
All the content on Sky Movies 9HD and 10HD, as well as SBO1HD and SBO2HD, are true HD - although the quality of the HD source can vary. All the movies I've seen are a big improvement over their SD versions, but many are not significantly better than DVD quality.

Err...

This is a major point of the Sky HD box - it's a Sky+ box as well, so has 160GB of space for recordings. Any HD material recorded will be played back in HD - Sky+ records the digital stream directly from the tuner output, so when you play back a Sky+ recording it's *exactly* the same as when it was broadcast - no recompression or anything.

what screen do you have?

splobber

42PX60. If Carlsberg made plasma TV's then this would be the one they would make. Even though their lager tastes like warm cats ****.

I watched about 20 minutes of Sin City HD earlier instead of the 2 minutes the other day and have conceded that it is probably as good, maybe marginally better then the DVD. Still doesn't compare to the detail on the BBC HD World Cup channel though, although it is difficult to compare on a dark film like this.

I watched Hotel Rwanda on Sky Movies HD a few weeks back and the picture on that was excellent.

I run an upscaling OPPO DVD player into the screen and that gives an excellent picture, hence me not making dramatic comparison improvements on the HD channels. As I said before, Nat Geo HD and Discovery HD look a lot sharper then some of the content on the movie channels tbh.

From what I've seen so far, Sky Movies HD films certainly look better than the DVD versions, although not always spectacularly so. Some, such as "Cellular" look exceptionally sharp and detailed. I thought "Sin City" difficult to judge due to the look of the film.

This is what I mean. You don't look at a movie on the HD channel and go "WOW AWESOME BEST PIC EVAH!!!!", yet flick over to the World Cup or Wimbledon and the detail is more pronounced and you can really notice it.

Some movies are better then others I suppose and knowing Sky they are probably fleecing us anyway.

Is this where the difference between 720p and 1080i comes in as isn't one better for films and the other for sports?

Does Sky HD let you pick between them or are they only offering one format at the moment?

splobber
03-07-2006, 19:33
You can switch between 720p and 1080i but the latter gives the better picture on my screen. With my DVD player I find the best pic is offered at 720p.

Absolutely, made me want to move to the land of Far Far Away. The detail is incredible. I'm now watching films over again that I've watched on DVD previously, there's just no comparison.

I thought sin city was a major disapointment. Not the movie. That was awesome, but the quality was a bit meh. I use a video scaler to uprate dvd's to plasma panel and DVD's are usually better that what sin city was. also it only took up the same amount of data as tonight with johnathon Ross on SD BBC1! the bitrate must have been really low!

You sure you recorded the HD version? My HD recording was 4 times the size of Ross on BBC1

Lucky buggers! I can't wait to get an HD source to use on my PX60, but Sky HD doesn't really seem worth it yet, espeically as I'm not a big sports viewer.

AxelMusic (http://www.axelmusic.com/productDetails/065935820925) have the blu ray confirmed as region free and for release on 21/10/08 for £14.98, not bad.

Only problem is it's a Canadian release, so bi-lingual packaging. :gag:
