Have just reviewed The Candidate - an excellent 1972 film starring Robert Redford as an idealistic senatorial candidate attempt to maintain his integrity.

Check out my DVD Times review in the link in my sig

Has anyone else seen this film?

What are the chances of this getting a dvd make-over?
or should I just get the currently available (but not very good) R1 dvd?

Raphph's review is here (http://www.dvdtimes.org/content.php?contentid=4121) btw!

I would hold on; I reckon the chances that Warners will revisit this properly are very good (and we've yet to get it in R2). I saw it again, quite recently, on cable; marvellous film with a killer punch line.

Cheers, John.
I just hope it gets a revisit sooner rather than later! Hopefully it'll be on tv in the meantime!

How about Warners doing a Redford boxset:

The Candidate
Jeremiah Johnson
All The President's Men
The Natural

Works for me...

Watched a superb print of it on Film Four last month. Not sure when it was last on terrestrial though.

Hello there. I only just registered. I hope it's ok to bump this thread back to the top again, because I'd like to know if there are any R2 news / rumours?

Has anyone mailed Warners regarding a proper R2 release of "The Candidate"?

The Sting SE. I assume this is going to be the R1 Legacy Series pendant!? Play.com has it listed, but the status is Not currently available. When I last checked it was November 2005.

And I wish Fox would finally release a R2 DVD of "The Hot Rock".
'Afghanistan Bananastand' has got to be one of the coolest passwords ever.

All the President's Men R1 SPECIAL EDITION / 2006

To commemorate the film's 30th anniversary, look for Warner Home Video to re-release All the President's Men in a new special edition next year. Expect extras and featurettes focusing on the production, as well as the actual Watergate scandal.

Welcome to the Forums; no news I'm afraid, but keep an eye on 'Upcoming' (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=238227); you never know.

Robert Redford is planning a sequel. He said he will play the same character 30 years on, who is now president of the United States. If this comes about, do you think Warners would finally consider releasing the 1972 film R2 / OAR ?

Not normally into this kind of thing (or sequels generally) but i think this sounds like a great idea as long as they get a quality scriptwriter and director on board! Shame Tanner '88 already did a similar thing though.

In the early 70's Michael Richie made a handful of dark, brilliant satires which are still are rather underrated. Anybody who loved The Candidate should also check out Smile and Prime Cut if they haven't seen them.

Erm, all I can say is ****! :brickwall
I am such a mong. I wait this long and the second I order the dvd it's on tv! I can't win!
BBC4 website says it's widescreen as well so no doubt a much better print than the current 4:3 dvd! :(
sigh!

So it seems BBC Four showed a "new" print in widescreen (but it still had quite a lot of speckles) as the reel change marks from the dvd were absent but to be honest I prefer the fullscreen dvd for 2 reasons. 1) the colour was far too "hot" on BBC Four and the print was rather too bright (the dvd looks far more natural and as I would expect a 1972 film in this style to look) and 2) the framing in fullscreen (although open matte and being a 1972 film not the OAR) is actually a lot better than the overly tight widescreen presentation. For a film in a pseudo-documentary style the 4:3 image is actually a better fit I feel.
Just my 2p but I'm actually now glad I got the dvd, plus Sky+ failed and screwed up the recording so phew for the dvd backup!

It's on the Sky plus. I would have missed it if I hadn't seen it here, so thanks.
