DVD Times have just released details of the first HD-DVD releases. Anybody else as disappointed as I am that we're just getting stuff already out on DVD rather than any of the DVD day-and-date (or very close to day-and-date) releases in the States like "Superman Returns" or "Lady of the Lake".
Pleased to see Jarhead included since we didn't get the two-disk version on DVD, but otherwise it's a pretty dull list.
My usual DVD supplier has these titles for pre-order at £13.89, which is cheaper than importing them from the US, but I'm not interested in replacing perfectly good DVDs I've already paid for, just in getting new releases on the better format when available, so there's nothing for me here.
Also interesting to see there's no combo releases in the list. Personally I hate double-sided releases but I wonder if this represents a deliberate position for future releases.

So spill, whos that then?
Sendit.com (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click?p=17328&a=60823&g=109565) have them at £13.89 each.

Well, The Bourne Supremacy (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click?p=17328&a=60823&g=109565&url=http://www.sendit.com/dvd/item/7001000128758) and Serenity (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click?p=17328&a=60823&g=109565&url=http://www.sendit.com/dvd/item/7001000128757) look good value, but it's disappointing that the line-up doesn't include the new US titles as there are tons I want from there.
I find it hard to actually find the HD DVDs on the Sendit.com (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click?p=17328&a=60823&g=109565) site.
Will be interesting as to what titles people will be Rebuying on HD-DVD and selling off their current versions.....
Matrix in HD perhaps?

The easiest way is to just key HD-DVD into the search field and you'll then get a list. My guess is that if the format starts to take off they'll do what the US stores do and have a separate link but the above method works very well in the meantime.

Can you buy HD-DVD players in the UK yet? I've not seen them in stores (or online for that matter), but then again I've not really looked.

The basic Toshiba model comes out mid November and the top of the range model at the end part of December

And the Xbox360 HD-DVD drive is out 24th Nov
Have to admit there's absolutely nothing on HD DVD i'd either like to see again or watch at all on any definition at the moment. Anyone know if Armageddon (Bay) is likely to appear on the format, cos if that's a Blu Ray only thing, i'm gonna have a sulk.

I do think if they want HD-DVD to be a winner, they need to under cut the current price of brand new DVDs... tis the only way to make people see the next generation... mind you it's gonna take forever for recordable hd-dvds... booooo hiss

Bugger, had a feeling it would be. This is why these new formats are crap.

I've just had an email from them saying that HD-DVDs will get more of a highlight when they're released but in the meantime you can see the HD-DVDs grouped by using this URL: http://www.sendit.com/video/promotion/hd_dvd

It says on there website that
"All Digital Versatile Discs on sale at Sendit.com are Region Two (2) Format only."
And in the details of Jarhead Direct Link (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/click?p=17328&a=60823&g=109565&url=http://www.sendit.com/dvd/item/7001000128756) it also says it's region 2 .
So let me ask just one more time.......is there region coding on HD-DVD's ?
If not, whats the benefit of buying from a UK seller selling UK versions ?
Thanks

I think the reference to Region 2 on the sendit.com site is just a "cut and paste" job from the standard DVD release. Nothing to worry about unless it's a combo release.
Toshiba's statements on the subject have been very consistent - that there is no region coding on the disks at present and the players being sold at present don't enforce region encoding on HD-DVD content.
This is at variance with the Blu-Ray position which has never said that Blu-Ray disks will be region free, although seemingly the titles issues so far are causing no problems.
Toshiba have always maintained however that they DO impose region encoding on Standard DVDs. My reading of this is that any combo release from the States will NOT play the standard DVD side on a Region 2 player (which means any of the currently unhackable HD-DVD players).
So far none of the UK releases have been announced as combo disks so there should be no issue with any of their content.
Of course it also begs the question as to what happens to the "standard definition" extra's but since nobody's complained yet I think we can safely assume that these count as "HD-DVD content albeit presented in standard definition" - ie that they will be region free.
For me this is one of the big strengths of buying a UK HD-DVD player rather than importing a US player at a cheaper price - you get all the HD-DVD disks from the States plus the ability to play your existing DVD Region 2 collection.

Unless like me you have more R1 SD's than R2 ;)
There are rumours that the new R2 players will be easily hacked for DVD multi-region anyway...
What about the source material of this 1st wave of Universal releases? It's almost sure that the same master as USA has been used. I bought Riddick USA and the japanese one, they are 2 different cuts (Director's and theatrical) and 2 different codecs VC-1 USA, H.264 Japan. But Riddick has been released in japan by Toshiba and in USA by uniseral, I've bought but still not tested the japanese versions of Apollo 13, Doom etc.. I'll soon tell if they are the same masters of USA version (even if I guess so). Does anyone know if the UK upcoming versions come from the same master? It's strongly possible that they will
