View Full Version : Nationwide account holders - looky here
Used the ATM earlier and just managed to read a little message that briefly flashed up saying you won't be able to access your account through ANYONE'S ATM between the 5th & 12th October.
'kin' brilliant. I'm off on my hols then so looks like I'll have to take a wad of euros with me but, apart from that, they aren't widely advertising it which is a bit naughty.
So make sure you've taken your beer tokens out in good time.
Are you sure? That seems a bit drastic, surely not the best way to stop people panicking.
Not sure that will happen. I could see 5th and 12th but not between the dates! Natiowide are upgrading their NCR ATM's so could see outages on two Sunday's but not for a whole week!
Are you sure you did not read that incorrectly? Maybe the between part was only for times (e.g. between 2AM and 8AM or something like that)

Just checked my account and their website. Can't see anything relating to this and would be surprised if they did this. I also reckon the ATMs are only being closed overnight on 5th and 12th October.
I thought that was a bit drastic too - I will check again today. As I said, it only flashed up briefly with not enough time to read it so I may have misread, but I thought it said between those dates. I will post later unless someone else does.
I'm sure you must have misread it, the only times I've seen something like that it's been for a short time in the small hours.
Sounds like scare tactics from a Bradford and Bingley salesman.
I hope it bloody well is a scare tactic as I’m going to the states next week armed with my nationwide flex card and hope I don’t get shafted with this whilst I’m over there.
I've got an idea. Someone ring them. They're very helpful and open 24x7
That's so crazy it just might work

I won’t be ringing them from America.
Ah Zenza, I heard he once stared at a carton of orange juice for an hour because it said 'concentrate'.
Ah Harsin, always can count on him chatting ****.

Zenza...are you there now? If not ring them, if you are, perhaps Skype to their Int'l number could help you make the call cheaply.
Nationwide really are exceedingly helpful on the phone, I've always found.
Nah, I’m flying there next week.
Was going to ring them anyway this week to make sure that they don’t block my credit card and flex card as they normally do this if you don’t inform them that you will be going away.

I've only been with Nationwide a few years and set the account up specifically for overseas withdrawals, and never needed to advise them about my travel.. I did ask about notifying them before I went to use it the first time abroad (as it was 9 months after setting up the account and I was going overseas for a year but I had never actually used it prior to then!) but they said there is no need.
In fact, I think I've only ever used my Nationwide card overseas so they would probably consider any usage in the UK as suspicious! On the other hand, I have problems with Egg randomly blocking transactions wherever I use my cards.
I’m doing it as I’ve never used it abroad so they may get suspicious about transaction with both cards in the USA.
Called them today and there is actually an option for on the automated message to inform them of a trip aboard so your card doesn't get blocked.
I once had transactions blocked in Canada while using [whereas I never did before] and since then always rang. As pointed out there is now an option the automated system.
Barclaycard have joined in as they asked me during a recent call if I wanted to notify them of a trip abroad for the system [I had booked flights on the card]

I rang up Nationwide and went into my branch to let them know I was going to the US for two week. My card got canceled about 5 days in!
I had to ring them at 1-2am US time (while drunk) to sort it out. They did after putting me on hold a few times and hanging up on me.
I came home to a nice phone bill...
Psycho

Regarding the OPs first message. He is indeed incorrect. The cash machine network is only going to be down on 5th and 12th October between 2am and 7am. I was walking past a Nationwide machine in Hammersmith this evening and had a quick look.

That's good news - it was so quick I didn't catch the times, just the dates. Panic over.
And thanks for the tips about letting them know I'll be abroad - I hadn't thought of that.

I bet it will end up getting blocked even though I have informed them that I will be travelling over there.:|
