View Full Version : Are Barclaycard the most hopeless credit card company ever? Formerly Morgan Stanley.

Situation is that I have been a completely happy and relatively high-spending customer of Morgan Stanley Platinum credit card (mastercard) for years. A year or two ago Morgan Stanley sold the credit card business to Goldfish, who subsequently sold it to Barclaycard, around April this year I think. The card has still said Morgan Stanley on it though, including when reissued, and there's been no change to the fantastic level of service ... until now.

About a month ago Barclaycard said they were going to send out new cards to everyone and the Morgan Stanley ones would stop working. Supposedly there would be no changes to the T&Cs but they have butchered the cashback and made it barely worthwhile. Anyway I never received my new card (and I still haven't, despite emailing and telephoning them to try to discuss it). When you phone them (on an 0844 number ) you just get their Indian call centre which is the WORST example of an overseas call centre I've ever experienced. They are absolutely hopeless, and either can't understand or won't understand that I've never received a replacement card. If you email them you just get referred to the 0844 call centre. Yes I know there is probably a local number on saynoto0870 but it's not really the actual high cost of the call I object to, it's more the principal of contempt that they hold their customers in, to have such an utterly untrained, useless and couldn't-care-less call centre and expect their customers to pay to call it and pay to sit on hold or in a queue.

At the weekend I got a mass-mailing from them asking why I was still using my old Morgan Stanley card (I haven't been) and a day later, another mass-mailing apologising for sending the previous email. More incompetence. Wouldn't really mind but the mails are being put straight in the Outlook junk email folder ... with Outlook set on the default junk settings. How frickin' hard would it be for them to get a copy of Outlook themselves and work out whether the format of their mass mails is triggering Outlook's default junk email settings, and so change their mail format accordingly so that it didn't get classed as junk? It's not difficult.

So now I have got a statement from them (so I finally know my card number) but they have charged me interest on it, even though if you clear your balance in full (which I always do, and did last month - except for the £6 that the September statement said would be taken by direct debit, as it always has been, for years). It looks like they did not take the £6 direct debit even though the last statement says they would, so that £6 shortfall is therefore the cause of the £2 interest.

They're absolute idiots. Throwing away a good customer like me (they may not make much in interest or fees out of me since I pay in full each month - except for when they muck up their own collection that is, but they make up for it in transaction fees from the retailers I use). I'm done with trying to get them to understand that I don't have a new card so don't know the card number or expiry date on it. I'm just going to pay the full amount of this statement, and write to the muppets telling them to close the account.

So anyone else had the misfortune to get lumbered with this bunch of plonkers?

:cuckoo:

They don't even have funny adverts any more :(

Only used my MS card for stoozing so now pay Barclaycard instead.

When I got my first Barclaycard statement, it said my 0% ran out in 'Nov 08' so I called them up to check when it ran out exactly. Now you mention it, I used one of the alternative numbers on saynoto0870.com and got through quite quickly and to a British call centre. Question easily sorted.

Worth trying the alternative numbers (can't remember which I used) but you might get more joy that way.

Barclaycard are not good. Friend of mine works for Barclays and his card got cloned and the amount of hassle he had trying to get it resoved with the Indian calls centre was mindboggling!

I'm annoyed. I chose MS when I wanted to ditch Barclaycard three years ago. Now I'm forced back with them.

I did get the new card but about two weeks after the PIN arrived. I then had a bit of trouble changing the PIN at a cashpoint. I also don't like their website payment either.

I haven't got my first statement yet and am waiting to see what happened to all the cashback I'd accrued.

Got a barclaycard as well after being with Morgan Stanley for years. Just had to buy something on it to spend the cashback as they credit your account rather than send you a cheque like MS used to.

So know just have to get around to closing the account.

The cashback accrued on the Morgan Stanley card has been applied as a credit on my first Barclaycard statement, yes. Because my purchases on the MS card in it's final weeks are more than the cashback amount the net effect is I have a reduced balance to pay off. If the cashback had been more than the final purchases then as Fat Bloke says I would have been left with the account in credit and presumably having to buy stuff to recover the money (or close the account and make them send a cheque).

Little tip to save all these 0844/0845 numbers either:

1) Use www.saynoto0870.com or
2) Use the int number on the back of the card, it normally says when ringing from aboard please call ... just take away the + and add a 0.

Well I have written to them asking them to close my account, as I'm just not interested in chasing them for the new card that I've not received, or dealling with their hopeless helpdesk any more. There are better card providers who have a clue out there. Hope they enjoyed buying my account off Goldfish, because it was a complete waste of money for them.

I applied for one of their Pulse cards back-end of July. I still haven't received a working card and last week I wrote to cancel the account.

Basically, 2 weeks after applying I got a letter saying this is the PIN to use with your card - er what card ?? Phoned up and they said they'd cancel it and send out another one. About 1 week later a card turned up, tried to activate it but it turned out to be original card turning up 2 weeks late. The same charade happened another 3 times. At one stage, I had 4 different Pulse cards (2 of which with the same card number !!!!) - none of which were usable :nono: And then looking at the letters I have received from them - it would seem they also managed to open up 2 accounts for me !!!

To top it all off - over the weekend ( nearly 3 weeks after I last tried to activate the latest card to arrive in the post), I received ANOTHER card from them

def wasn't on the most recent 2 credit reports i got hold of.

Am a good girl now, only 4 credit cards :D

(personal, mystery shopping, overseas, 0% for 12 months on purchases - should close that one)

stoozing isn't worth it anymore with fees and such.

You have a separate card for mystery shopping? with a mystery identity on it :D ?

I'm a little surprised you don't have a separate card just for internet shopping, I know I do.

The cashback accrued on the Morgan Stanley card has been applied as a credit on my first Barclaycard statement, yes. ... have been left with the account in credit ...

Got my first statement with cashback applied and I'm in credit too. It would have been nice if they had written separately on the bill the amount from the old card and the money earned this month.

I got a new Goldfish card from them about a week ago, just rang to confirm I received it and there's no option to do so it just says to use the old card until the 27th, thanks and cuts you off

Dont forget they also put on the axa payment protection, even if you didn't have it before!

I dunno, they are still only about 3% But it depends on the length of 0% offered. Ive just swapped £2600 to Barclaycard for 15month! and been charged £78. What interest would I have paid on that amount in that time?

I too wasn't happy when I saw that Barclaycard took over Morgan Stanley. I gave up on Barclaycard a few years ago after my card got cloned to the tune of £800.

What really ****** me off is when I had to activate my new cards, phone the number and was expecting the usual security checks and the cards would be ready, thank you. Did all that but I also got a whole load of patter about an Identity Theft Protection service which seemed to go on and on and it was only towards the end of what she was saying, and while telling me she was waiting for the cards to be authorised that it was a service I had to pay for and have the right to cancel. Woah.... Hang on, I didn't sign up for that, I don't want that thank you. I mean really, it originally sounded like it was part of the card service, but no, £69 a year for them to sort out any identity theft issue if it were to happen that shouldn't have happened in the first place if proper security checks were done by them!!!

Told the lady to stuff that and was constantly asked if there was anything I didn't like about this service being offered to me. I had to tell her I was only expecting to phone and activate my cards not get a sales pitch.

Once all the bits and pieces have settled down, I too am cancelling my cards and going elsewhere, but I can't find a decent cash back credit card now.

I was given all that blurb, and basically told them that the card would never be leaving the house so if any fraudulent activity went on then that was their problem not mine. The bloke seemed to understand.

Egg Money is a good cash back card.
