I've a card (Amex) with a positive balance due to some cashback that was applied, however I'm finding it hard to find anything to spend it on. I know there are normally fees involved if you make a withdrawal at a cashpoint but does anyone know if this is still the case if the balance is positive?

Ask them to send you a cheque

I normally would, but didn't know if that would work as it was cashback and not an overpayment

They have no incentive to do so with cashback.

Why not just use it for day to day shopping and petrol etc? That will eat it up quick enough I am sure.

I've gotten so used to places not accepting it that I didnt even think about using it in a supermarket. I'll give that a go

I find most places take it that I shop. Certainly all the supermarkets and petrol stations do. Out of all the places I do regular shopping at I cannot think of any off the top of my head that do not take Amex. I run up around 35k/year on mine so get a nice cashback payment each year that usually buys me a nice gadget or similar :)

How're you getting cash back on your Amex cards?
I've got a green one and I get the points (which I bought a toaster with last year).

American Express Platinum Card (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=267) is what you want  (note: credit card not charge card!)

will be normal fee for cash withdrawal, but no interest to be paid
