View Full Version : "My so called life" boxset on the way!
Just got this email, thought it might be good news for some of you!:
Hey Everyone! It's Miller Time! :-)
I am very excited (ecstatic is more like it!) to inform you that the
My So-Called Life DVD Box Set is going to become a reality.
"How soon," you ask? You'll be amazed to learn that you can actually
place a pre-order now and reserve a copy with a $20 deposit. BMG has
agreed to license the DVD to AnotherUniverse.com as the exclusive source.
I, too, am amazed at how quickly things have progressed. To all those
who doubted this would actually happen, I say, "don't doubt the power
of prayer." :-P
Here is a little information:
1) The complete set will be issued on DVDs with bonus material, special
collector's packaging, booklet, etc. Specifics will be coming to
www.mscl.com/dvd soon!
2) There will be no region coding. It will play anywhere. International
shipping is available.
3) The DVD is available exclusively online, at
http://www.anotheruniverse.com/mscldvd
4) You can pay by credit card, check, or money order.
5) I believe that there is a phone number to order from (on their site).
6) For those who already own episodes 1-3, you can buy a set without that
disc.
7) The price with all episodes is $99.98.
8) The price for episodes 4-19 is $89.98 (the set will be identical,
minus disc one. You can insert the old disc into the new set
package – but not the holder).
9) These prices may go down given a high number of pre-orders, as
production costs can be spread out over a greater number of units.
10) There is a lot more info at http://www.anotheruniverse.com/mscldvd .
Important: The number of box sets manufactured will depend on the number
of pre-orders received. There is no guarantee that there will more after
the pre-order period. There is no “evil” strategy behind this; it's just
that the set is being manufactured in response to our demand. In fact,
we are the only reason it is being pressed at all. The estimated turnaround
time is 3 months. However, if extra bonus material is located before
production, and it is worthwhile, it is possible that this could be
extended so that the extra material can be included.
This is pretty much the first time that I can remember that a DVD is
being made solely in response to overwhelming fan demand and believe me,
your signatures and hard work made all of the difference. There were almost
4,500 pre-pre-order signatures, so AnotherUniverse.com is just trying to
make sure that they don't make too many or too few. It would suck to make
4,500 copies, if only 2,500 bought the set.
Besides that, I will post more information as it becomes available,
including information on extras, sneak peaks of the packaging etc.
I know when I originally wrote to everyone, I had quoted a lower $ amount
for the DVD box set. I had underestimated the number of discs that would be
needed for all of the episodes, as well as some of the costs for licensing
the material. I still believe that the price is fair, and in line with
other similar sets. The set will be made to have special features for
ardent fans and collectors… do I really have to convince you why to get
this? It’s all 19 episodes of the show! :-)

“The guy who used to work for BMG” :-)
I was going to post this as well.
Excellent news,I've got them all on video, but I think I'll be getting the dvd's...
It's good that you can buy it without the 1st one too as I've got that already.
:D
I'm pretty sure they'll be surprised at the demand for this set. Especially the way it's being distributed. Can't wait.
:D

Thanks everybody who signed the petition, I thought it would work but Im surprised at how quickly they've pulled their finger out.
$100 + shipping though !.:(
Its also a little worrying there craming 5 episodes per disc.

I got the e-mail as well, but nearly deleted it cos it looked like junk mail.
Anyway they say it going to be in Dolby 5.1! That sounds pretty damn good for TV series (shame Buffy didn't get the same treatment) but at £70+ I think....
I'm going to have to order it now! Should be a good invest if nothing else, if the release is going to be so limited...
I've just pre-ordered.
Did anyone else get forced to pay postage, even though they used the code to prevent that happening?
I'm guessing it's an 'overseas order' thing. I hope they adjust the final amounts later on to take this into account.

This seems to be a known problem as a few people have reported this.
Remember, International orders only $6 off shipping for pre-ordering, not free shipping which domestic orders get.
I so badly want this set but Im finding it hard to commit the $100 + bucks when so little is known about the technical specs of the discs.
The 1st disc that was released had some transfer issues if I recall correctly and as its possible to order the rest of the set minus the 1st disc, I kind of assume that the 1st disc is an example of what to expect for the rest of the discs.
A disc full of nothing but extras just seems to good to be true !.

I've pre-ordered. I reviewed the first disc here (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/reviews/other/mysocalledlife1.html) and I'll do likewise with the rest of the discs in due course.
I didn't think the first disc was at all bad - I'm certainly looking forward to the rest of them. Particularly as there's one episode I haven't seen as Channel 4 didn't show it!
What was the episode that channel four didn't show?

Wasn't it one that involved a shooting? Something controversial anyway, that C4 didn't feel appropriate.
As for the DVDs - glad to hear our signatures made a difference, although I'm a little shocked by the price!

The episode that wasn't shown during the first Channel 4 run (in August 1995) was the penultimate one, Weekend .
They did, however, show the episode during the belated repeat run, on 13th August 1997.
The reason for it being missed out on the first run was probably the risque running story about Rayanne being handcuffed to Angela's parents' bed...
Aha! Channel 4 didn't show an episode - that explains a lot! I was fishing thorugh my vid collection of this series and found all but 1 episode according to the episode list I got off the internet.
Was the "missing" episode ever shown on Trouble?

That's the reason I was told - subject matter considered inappropriate for a 6pm timeslot.

I always thought the banned episode was the one where Angela goes with Jordon to that sex house which is being used by the local highschool kids.
The theme for the episode was about people putting pressure on Angela to have sex before she felt ready.
It was shown in the re-run on C4 anyway, trouble.tv seem to show the episode's out of order so I never bothered watching them on that station.

This is great news - as soon as I get paid I'm going to pre-order! Have such good memories of the series - just hope I'm not disappointed when I watch it again.
Going to have to get this for me sister for her birthday
Saw on bbc ceefax that the orders are up to 700 so only another 300 to go

MSCL.COM DVD Newsletter -- February 28, 2002

PRE-ORDERS REACH 1,700 UNITS!
----------------------------------------------
Wow!
It has not even been 19 full days since the pre-order period began, and we have already reached the 1,700 pre-order mark with little sign of slowing down. So, what does this mean? It means that the limited edition "My So-Called Life" DVD Box Set has moved into production.
----------------------------------------------
NOTE OF CLARIFICATION - PLEASE READ
----------------------------------------------
Based upon inquiries sent to MSCL.com, there is some confusion about MSCL.com's involvement regarding the MSCL DVD Box Set. Let me clarify.
The MSCL DVD Box Set is being produced and sold by Another Universe <http://www.anotheruniverse.com/mscldvd>. MSCL.com is *not* involved in the production or sale of the DVD set, and has no financial stake in it. MSCL.com exists solely to share and sustain interest in "My So-Called Life."
To that end, MSCL.com is:
(a) providing a link to the MSCL DVD Box Set page located at
<http://www.anotheruniverse.com/mscldvd>;
(b) allowing me to send periodic updates to their mailing lists; and,
(c) offering suggestions regarding the content of the special bonus disc.

LIMITED EDITION SET IS *LIMITED*
----------------------------------------------
AnotherUniverse.com believes that the entire pre-order run of 2,500 limited edition box sets will be sold out by the end of next week. This means that if you have not already pre-ordered a set, your time is very short! Once this production run has sold out, it will not be available again. While Another Universe might produce a second run of the set, they will never again produce this limited edition with the special packaging and the bonus disc of "extras."

FREE SHIPPING DEADLINE EXPIRES TODAY! - HURRY!
----------------------------------------------
For those of you who have been holding off pre-ordering, Another
Universe is extending its free domestic shipping offer! To take
advantage of free domestic shipping, orders must be received by
midnight (PST) on February 28, 2002.

ORDERING SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS

If you previously experienced difficulty placing your order, friends
in high places tell me that all reported errors have been fixed. If

SPECIAL THANKS TO YOU!
----------------------------------------------
Lastly, I'd like to thank you all for signing the petition, for signing
the pre-pre-order list, and now, for pre-ordering in droves making this project a smashing success! This would never have been possible without your enthusiasm and support.
Anyway, we'll keep you posted on the project as it progresses. If you know of something that would make a great bonus for the box set, please email me at <mailto:comments@mscl.com>, and I'll make sure they are considered for the set!
All the best,

Just got this:
----------------------------------------------
PRE-ORDERS REACH 2,500 UNITS!
----------------------------------------------
Hey everyone.
This email is being sent as a general "heads-up" to everyone who signed
the MSCL DVD petition. It is now apparent that the planned 2,500
pre-order copies will be sold by the end of this week.
PLEASE NOTE: After the pre-order period ends, you will still have an
opportunity to buy the discs, but they will not come in the special
pre-order packaging.
AnotherUniverse.com has said that it will set up a wait list after the
first 2,500 copies have been sold. You will definitely get a DVD set,
but you will be on a wait list for the special packaging.
There are TWO possible scenarios:
1) Some people will cancel their orders. In such a case, the next
customer on the wait list will receive the special pre-order version.
2) If the wait list is large, we will lobby for a minimal increase
(say 150 units) in production of special pre-order DVD sets.
As always, if you have questions, feel free to send me an email at
<mailto:jasonr@mscl.com>
Thanks for making this happen!
Jason Rosenfeld
I've not had any contact asking for the rest of the cash? Has anyone had any contact from anotheruniverse, if they are to be shipping by the end of the week you'd think they'd be collecting the rest of the cash?

As much as I love MSCL, infact I'd go as far as to say a MSCL boxset would be top on my list on a desert island dvd list everytime.
But the way this has been handled has led me to miss out on ordering.
Trouble is, nobody really knows what there getting.
Nobody really knows what the shipping cost will be.
Nobody even knows if they made the first 2500 pre-orders.
Nobody knows if a retail release will happen, and if so will it improve on this drastically over priced ltd run ?.
They really should have thought this through before making it a pre-order, they've lost my order anyway and it saddens me to have to say that.

I'll ditto that Jimmyboy. I feel so sad about that but I can't justify such a speculative purchase. I feel sure I will regret it when some forum member writes in about how lush it all is but I simply can't afford not to pick and choose.
Looks like they are going to start charging those who have pre-ordered the set:
Greetings!
We have begun production on the LONG awaited...
MY SO CALLED LIFE DVD SET!!
We will be pre-authorizing your credit card, to ensure that the order will go through when charged.
You will be pre-auhtorized for an additional $79.98.
($99.98 Price Per Set -$20.00 for your deposit)
This does NOT include any shipping charges. This will be calculated seperately.
Shipping information and any shipping charges due
will follow when we know how much the finished product will cost to ship.
If you have any questions about this product or this email...
Please contact:
mike@anotheruniverse.com
Thank you! We are just as excited as you are about this!!!
More news will be released as new information becomes available!
The wait is almost OVER!
I do realise this is a bit of an unknown, but this is something I've wanted for years and don't want to miss the boat on.
I suspect those of you that are unsure now will find people who want to trade later either here or on e-bay. I'll certainly be getting rid of my single disc as I ordered the complete set (I didn't want a mix of sets and packaging) even though I have the first episodes already.
Jimmyboy
13-03-2002, 14:46
Yikes,
Glad I didnt pre-order it now.
£71 + a possible £40 customs tax + shipping !.
You could be looking at around £150 in total for this boxset.
If it goes on normal retail sale for a reasonable price, I'll be picking one up though.
Yeah, it is bit of risk, but I for one had to go for it. Have taken plenty of risk up on DVD box sets up to now and have been lucky, so I'm hoping to ride that luck.
Secondly I felt I needed to support this kind of venture to possibly see some of my other favourite series come to DVD (e.g. Blakes 7). If this shows that fans will buy their fave shows as a consortium then more people might look into producing DVD box sets of shows that won't sell in a high volume.
The shipping is the biggest uncertainty and if you look at theirwebsite (http://www.anotheruniverse.com/help/au/shippingrates.asp) shipping on this box as standard would cost $69.95
This is very exciting news indeed.
I expect you all to sign my Malibu Beach DVD box set petition.
Malibu Beach? Pah!
I've got a Manimal petition going. Best series ever.
Another mail from these idiots (I'm loosing faith in this myself now):
<<< Please note, that if you already responded to this email, you do not have to respond again. This is just for those who had trouble getting it the first time it was sent out. >>>
Order Number:XXXXXXXX
(Total reading time is about 2 minutes)
Hey Everyone.
This email begins with an update on production of the boxed
set, gives the scheduled release date (mark your calendars!)
and requires that you click on one or two options. If your
email client cannot handle HTML email, you may have to cut
and paste a link. As always, email me with any problems.
Once again, thanks for making this box set happen. Were
it not for the occasional, minor potholes, I would think this
was all a dream. And besides, now we can all gloat to my
old company that we were right all along. ;-) Just kidding.
We have received numerous phone calls from members of
the press, as well as fans of other series who hope to follow
our example. We know that as the delivery date approaches,
the importance of this project will be even more apparent.
Personally, I believe that the entertainment industry might
finally really take notice of the power of networked fans.
I have some progress to report today, as well as some
very important changes.
First, I'll tell of the progress:
1) AU signed an agreement to begin manufacturing of pre-order
packaging by G-Whiz Online. Shipment of pre-order packaging due
in late May
2) There will be a press release from BMG, I am told, very shortly.
3) Full payment for the sets is going out to BMG next week.
4) There is a delivery date of late May/early June for the DVDs
from BMG.
5) Permitting one week for assembly, AnotherUniverse.com are
tentatively scheduling the release for 6/18/02. If there are changes
due to scheduling bonus material, I will let you know immediately.
Now, as they say, "The devil is in the details." Here are some
previously unforeseen issues that have reared their ugly heads:
*During the last week I received about 14 emails from fans who said
that their credit cards were already charged for the full amount.
Authorizations were taken, and some debit cards do show
authorizations as sales, while the other incidents are being checked
out.
*AU has never had an authorization period this long and ran into
an unforeseen situation. We learned that the CC authorization
cannot remain open for 3-4 months without becoming invalid. Many
moons ago, I worked for a car rental company. I know this to be the
case in that business (with contracts having to be closed in 30 days),
and I am sorry that I did not realize it would apply here.
This means that there are two choices:
1) AU can take the full charge and snail-mail a proof of pre-order
toeach customer. (This has the added advantage of alerting you if there
is some problem with your order -- if you fail to receive a proof of
pre-order from AU then you can clear it up with them prior to the
ship date.)
2) You can cancel your pre-order.
To approve the charges and snail-mailing of "proof of sale",
mailto:postmaster@ANOTHERUNIVERSE.COM?subject=approve-XXXXXXXX.
To cancel your order click here
mailto:postmaster@ANOTHERUNIVERSE.COM?subject=cancel-XXXXXXXX
While this will eliminate the uncertainty of when the charge will occur,
I am sorry that they cannot wait longer to take the charge. Again,
the
potential upside to all of this is that if you do not receive the
notification by snail-mail, we can fix the problem before the product
ships, and ifthere is a credit card problem it can be rectified before
ship date. The confirmation snail-mail will be physical proof of
your order, which a lot of people have requested.
I hope no one cancels their order, but you can do so at any time. That
is why the stated policy has always been to allow cancellations if
therewere changes. We knew that there could be changes along
the way. Please remember, that once this set has been sold there
might not be another chance to buy it, and it is only happening
because of our collective support.
Note: Due to a large number of requests, there will be a limited number
of box sets available when this product ships, but it will not include
pre-order packaging (i.e. the lunchbox case), and will not be at the
pre-order incentive price (retail is $115.98).
Thanks! And please hang in there a bit longer. June will be here before
we know it.
Jason Rosenfeld
I've actually done the agree, simply because I would like to see fan power achieve something as I believe (probably incorrectly) that this can only be a good thing for the future. I just hope my principles don't end up costing me a small fortune.
But the statement "Couldn't organise a **** up in a brewery" seems to suit this operation.
I've had to cancel my order :(
Do you mind if I ask why Richie?
simply 'cause I can't justify the cost at present. Nowt to do with the payment policy really (although it hasn't helped that full payment is in effect 2 months prior to shipping and still no-one knows what the special features or disc specs will be)
Jimmyboy
26-03-2002, 20:59
How can they charge you now when they dont even know how much its going to cost in total.
Not involved with this myself: great series (did anyone else think the mum was rather tasty?) but the set is too expensive for my pocket.
However, I wouldn't be so hard on the people organising all this. They've made a mistake and are doing something a lot of other companies would not do; telling everyone exactly what's going on, and keeping you all informed.
That's the way I see it at least...
I certainly appreciate them keeping me informed.
I value this very highly. So often it is only after scouring these forums that I find out that there is a problem e.g. Heathers AnchorBay. This is the first time that a project like this has been attempted and so it is bound to have a few teething problems.
Another Universe has finally posted a table of shipping charges for non-US deliveries. It may be found here: http://www.anotheruniverse.com/mscldvd/shipping.html . European customers are to be charged US$18, those in Australia US$19.
This is getting dreadfully expensive for five discs, even if they are to be issued in a "limited" edition, when any firm details of transfer quality, quality of packaging, nature of extras, release date, etc. are all still up in the air...
In the light of the recent, extraordinary demand for full payment up-front, I am still in two minds as to whether to proceed with my pre-order or not.
If I decide to do so, is this shipping charge also going to be taken in advance? (And if not, how is it going to be collected?)
If I decide to cancel, now that circumstances have changed, is recovery of my $20 deposit going to be straightforward?
The series is certainly exceptional, but...
from the anotheruniverse website:
"The details so far: 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound , Fullscreen (1.33:1) Format, Region 0 Coding (Can be played in players around the world), 3-4 episodes per disc (5 total), Special Bonus Disk. Estimated Ship Date: June 18. 2002"
Further to my last post I have in fact decided to go ahead with my order. I weighed up the various factors and it seemed a little silly of me to cancel something that I have been part of trying to get released from the start!
Remember that if you ordered before Jan 3rd you get $6 off shipping, making UK Shipping $12
Can't wait to get mine, $12 for shipping isn't too bad for a boxset.

Actually the 5th disc is an extras only disc so the first 3 discs will contain 5 episodes each & 4 on the 4th disc.
Thats one of the reasons that turned me off buying the set.
Got my receipt in the post today, the letter was dated April 12th, no new information just confirms payment in full of the order.
Another update, box-set due to ship 18th June.
Got my receipt today - letter dated April 12th - postmarked 6th June. Orderd on 20th Feb.

I got my receipt about a week ago.
By strange coincidence, I got an email update from Jason today. It sounds like it's coming together very nicely. I wouldn't expect to see it turn up before the autumn, but I think it will be worth waiting for!
Here's what the latest update says:
------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey Everyone!
It has been a while since my last email update. There has been so much going on in all areas, that I would like to take an opportunity to update everyone on it:
For those who read the message forums at mscl.com regularly, you probably already read my posts about delays in clearing all of the music and artwork for the box set.
I have been to BMG three times over the last two weeks, and I have this to report:
1) Every piece of music in the show was cleared. There will be no need to cut anything (they could have sped things along by cutting out some songs, but we believed that diehard fans would demand an uncut DVD)
2) The lunchbox design for the pre-order sets was okayed by Buena Vista
3) Production was given the green light
Now that BMG cleared everything they needed to clear for this to happen, this project will progress extremely quickly. Nevertheless, the June 18th date is not realistic. I would like to say that BMG is not to blame for the delay. This is a legal DVD box set, being created with the full permission and cooperation of content owners and artists. This is no bootleg, and we could not and would not cut any legal corners.
Another development is the creation of a special customer service email address for MSCL DVD customers. If you write to mscldvd@anotheruniverse.com, it will be treated separately from other customer service emails received by AU. In fact, it will be forwarded to me to provide an answer. I am usually able to respond in the same day, although I have been getting a lot of emails lately because I sent a lot of mass mails to resolve some order problems. I am trying to maintain a 24 hour response guarantee.
If you have not seen the lunchbox design, you can see it at the designer's site http://www.fivesided.com/mscl --it is really cool.
Also, I am hoping that we can clear 2-3 minutes worth of the bonus disc footage so that people can get a taste of what is yet to come. Check the www.AnotherUniverse.com/mscldvd order page in the coming week, as I believe that the video will be posted there.
For regular updates, or simply to talk with other MSCL fans, the message forums are also the place where I post information before it gets mass mailed:
http://www.mscl.com/cgi-bin/wwwthreads/wwwthreads.pl?action=list&Board=general
Also, US News and World Report featured the MSCL DVD in the May 20th issue. It was posted here: http://www.usnews.com/usnews/issue/020520/misc/20dvd.htm
However, after 2 weeks it turned into a pay-only article. If you creatively Google the usenet, you can find the entire text (or go to the dentist and see if they have a copy of the print article lying around). They credited the fans of MSCL with being the first fans to succeed in getting a company to put out their show on DVD. Woohoo!
So anyway, we will be posting a new release date soon. BMG can typically turn around a project within 30 days, but the lunchboxes are going to take a bit longer, as it is a relatively small run, and US Customs is a little slower than in the past. Finally, since a lot will be happening in a very short time, I am going to soon post a daily "diary" to give updates of what is going on. I will place the link in the MSCL forums.
Thanks!
Jason Rosenfeld
My receipt just arrived this morning. Looking forward to getting the discs. With my luck it will just arrive when I have gone on holiday.
TO EVERYONE WHO HAS ORDERED THIS!!!!!!
Check your credit card statement carefully!!!!!!
I just got mine today and I've been charged another $115 - which is completely taking the ****!
If you have been overcharged:
a) contact your credit card
b) fill out the customer service form at mscl.com (http://www.mscl.com/mall/dvdbox.phtml)
c) email justin@anotheruniverse.com (he is in charge of the orders) and also cc the email to jasonr@mscl.com ('cause he wants to hear about any screw-ups!)
d) check the Home Theater Forum thread about all this here (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=66836)
Looks like Sept 17th is the release date now btw - taken bloody long enough and I for one am ****** off with the whole thing.
Was just thinking about this the other day and i was going to bump this thread.
Glad i didnt risk it if people are starting to get messed about (and i really couldnt afford it anyway)
I just checked my account back to the start of June and there isn't a double entry.
I'm all for supporting ventures like this, but they really are making a pigs ear of things.....
Nope, no double charge for me either.
Another update.........
THE LONG WAIT IS ALMOST OVER...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The long wait is almost over! The "My So-Called Life" DVD's are almost done. BMG has finished authoring them and has moved them to manufacturing. They should be done in a week or so and then they will be put in transport to us. They will ship IMMEDIATLY upon arrival at our California warehouse.
Because of the wait you have been forced to endure we want to ship the disks as soon as possible. PLEASE BE AWARE: We will not have the Lunch Box or the Bonus Disk at the time of shipping. The Lunch Box is shipping VIA Hong Kong. Best case is early October for remainder of the package. THERE WILL BE NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE FOR THE SECOND SHIPMENT!
We apologize for the delays on this project. The scope of this project was bigger than anything we had attempted before. The randomness and reasons of the delays far eclipsed anything we were told to expect. The result of which was you, the fan, being longsuffering and understanding enough to stick with us. We appreciate all your faith and understanding that each and every one of you has given us. THANK-YOU!
If you have tried contacting us by Phone/e-mail or the customer service forum and have not gotten a response, one will be forthcoming. It has taken us awhile to catch up with all requests.
In addition, we have a number of people who have had the CC card they used to order the DVD set incur a duplicate charge for the transaction. We would like to have you good folks check your CC statements and please let us know if this has happened already. You can e-mail dvdsupport@anotheruniverse.com to tell us. Some of you have been in touch already and we thank you for that. We are processing them as quickly as we can.
I'm so glad I didn't pre order this.I'm a huge mscl fan but couldn't afford it at the time.Having followed the 10 page thread over at Home Theatre Forum for a few months there's been more than one disgruntled customer!
If it ever appears for sale from play etc I may pick it up until then I'll stick with my dvd of the first 3 eps and the rest on video.
I'm SO fed up with the whole thing. Like I said on HTF I wish I'd never bothered in the first place. I love this show but all this hassle has so not been worth it.

has there been any news on the MSCL box sets?
did anybody get them yet?
did it all go really wrong?
i'm a huge fan and didn't know anything about this until right now so would love to know what the deal is... ?
i already have the original dvd...
anyone?

best thing to do is check out the HTF thread - it has ALL the info:
http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=66836&perpage=30&display=&pagenumber=1
it goes on for about 12 pages now so it's a bit of a slog!
Nothing has shipped yet.
I still haven't had refunds on the overcharges (it's in dispute with my credit card compnay now)
Now it looks like the discs will arrive without the "lunchbox" or extras disc and god know when they will arrive.
The whole thing is a disaster quite frankly!
It's so ironic though that since this set was put into production by nothing more than fan demand, just about every forgotton TV show has been given the DVD greenlight in the US!
"According to a recent announcement from AnotherUniverse.com the official release date for the complete "My So-Called Life" 5-DVD Box Set has been pushed to September 17th, 2002.
Check AnotherUniverse.com for more informations about the DVD set or take a look at our forum for more details."
The Forum is here:
http://www.mscl.com/forum/index.php
From what I can see, its fairly unlikely that they'll ship on the 17th.
They've probably done all the money down the boozer.

If I'd have brought this set I know straight off that it would automatically be the no.1 dvd set in my entire collection but Im still glad I held out from ordering.
It really is quite shoddy treatment of customers, they've had your money for what must be over 4 months now and have probably made a packet just on interest alone. The whole point for die hard fans buying the set so early was because they were promised a collectors lunch box and bonus disc (the former supposedly only available to those who pre-ordered) but if they are now unable to provide these then it makes all the hassle of pre-ordering a complete waste of time.
....and Im sure that this will see a full commercial release in the not too distant future, I mean its plainly obvious the demand was there, why not release the damn thing commercially to begin with ?.
- Treatment hasn't been great by AU. But at least information has been reasonably forthcoming - which is more than can be said for my previous record for waiting for a DVD held by DVDBoxOffice :)
- bonus disc (which sounds great) and lunchbox are shipping later without additional shipping costs. So those of us who pre-ordered will still get them.

Im not sure how great information has been to be honest.
Judging by the htf thread it appears that money was taken before AU and the distributor even owned or had legal access to the bonus features to be found on the extra disc, & recent release dates have been given only to then admit within the next sentence that the bonus disc isnt even finished let alone manufactured and boxed.
How on earth can they claim the set will be released this month when the bonus features havent even been finalised yet ?.
Don't know if this means it's now getting a wider release but this was posted on www.dvdfile.com a few days ago
"It took a while, but BMG Music has finally announced My So-Called Life: The Complete DVD Collection. Although short-lived, this highly acclaimed teen drama was nominated for several Emmy and Golden Globe awards, and now all 19 episodes are coming to DVD in one giant set. This 5-disc collection runs 900 minutes and is presented in 4:3 full screen and 5.1 surround. A very limited special edition "Lunch Box" will also be released only via select retailers, and includes a bonus 6th disc with all-new interviews with the shows creators. Retail is $99.95 for the standard edition (no MSRP available for the Lunch Box.) Street date 10/8. "
Is this the people everyone is expecting theirs from or does this mean a general release?
Edge
It's a mistake due to some over eager distributors or something like that. AnotherUniverse are the only people with the rights to sell this at the moment.

It's available to pre-order at Amazon (and been confirmed by BMG that it's for real this time):
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00006SFLV/103-5797609-2709450
It's out on 05/11. Apparently no bonus disc and lunchbox, but about $40-$50 cheaper (and TBH I don't think the bonus disc & lunchbox are worth the extra $40!) and at least you know you can trust Amazon!
C
Excellent! To be honest, I'm not really bothered about bonus features when it comes to television. It's only telly after all!
I hate everything to do with this release now.
If I ever get it from AU it will be a **** miracle.
As for Amazon getting to sell it now as well, so soon after the AU "exclusive window" (so 'exclusive' no-one gets the blody set) :oh-hum:
concettina
04-10-2002, 22:54
I know how you feel :oh-hum: I was triple charged on top of everything else. Only got the refunds after threatening all sorts on the MSCL forums (or that's why I presume they were so quick to refund me - as the majority of others haven't had their refunds yet and have been complaining for ages longer than me). I still lost £6 on the exchange rate on account of it, though. I've reached the 5 month mark since they charged me the initial authorised amount, and I only have 6 months to dispute it with the credit card company if I have to go that route, so no way I'm hanging around another month waiting for the set. Not when it looks like Amazon are going to ship them first anyway. :(
I can do without the bonus stuff (doesn't sound very interesting anyway) - will just be happy to be done with this mess!
Concetta
I disputed the charges with my credit card when I was charged a THIRD time! They have refunded me the over-charges directly - I have no idea if AU will ever cough up for them (but that's not my problem now).
Maybe I should now dispute the original charge too as it doesn't seem we are getting this set anytime soon?
Jimmyboy
04-10-2002, 23:53
Considering the bonus disc 'still' isnt finished it wouldnt surprise me if the exclusive BMG release loses it as well.
I can fully understand the reasons for being upset. I was so tempted to buy this myself especially as it was originally made out to be a once in a life time limited run. As a huge fan of MSCL myself I know the loyalty fans feel towards the show and the way AU and BMG have taken advantage of that loyalty is terrible.
I am quietly exstatic about amazon selling it. Just a shame a more customs friendly supplier doesnt stock it.
concettina
05-10-2002, 00:06
Exactly!! That's why so many people were willing to part with their cash - because it was so 'exclusive'. But then, when we pre-ordered we were also under the impression it was only going to be $20, and then pay the remainder when it was going to ship. The thought of AU still having access to my CC details makes me shudder too - remember they're still supposed to charge us for the postage when the time comes to ship! Can just see them making a mess of that too. :oh-hum:
Richie - that's exactly what I'm going to do, dispute the charges with the CC people. I can't be hassled going through all that aggravation to get them to cancel and refund me, I'm going to leave it up the CC company this time.
Concetta
Concetta
are you gonna dispute the original charge for the set AND the over-charges?
Just checked my statements and the $20 (£14.43) deposit was charged on 13/02 and the rest of $79.98 (£58.53) was charged on 14/03 (total pre-order being $99.98 before shipping). I've been paying interest on this ever since (because I'm crap and can't pay off my entire cc balance!)
Hope I can still dispute this.
My cc refunded the huge over-charged total of £129.39 without question when I disputed the 2 other transaction that I didn't authorise.
Problem is I DID authorise the original payments for the pre-order - guess this a question for my CC company!
The fact that AU will want to charge everyone's cc again to ship these sets now (they should ship for free after all the hassle but SO unlikely!) will cause a problem anyway as their company is now flagged on my card and any payment they try and take will get rejected.
what really annoys me is that Another Universe (http://www.anotheruniverse.com/mscldvd/) are still screaming about being the "exclusive retailer".
I still really want this dvd set AND the extras disc AND the lunchbox, after all that is what I signed up for and paid for - as did everyone else who pre-ordered.
So depressing (and yes I KNOW it's only a dvd blah blah blah but it could have been something special but instead has be ruined by utter morons).

05-10-2002, 01:00
I didn't have to dispute the 2 overcharges in the end, as AU refunded my card within 2 weeks that I started complaining (a miracle - that's why I still think it had to do with all the folk I told them I was going to report them to on the MSCL forum - I even put up the link to Watchdog complaints department and urged all the UK people to make a complaint! ) I DID phone up the CC company and make them aware of the situation when it happened, and asked for their advice though, and they made a note of it on my record. I was only going to give them a few weeks before disputing it, so I was lucky I didn't have to go through all that.
As for the authorised charges. The $20 was billed on 01/03 for me, and the remainder in May - and the only reason for that was because it took them 2 months to CHARGE my CC, as it had expired in March and I hadn't updated it. That was lucky, as they'll only dispute charges in a 6 month period, apparently (but I'm sure all CC companies are different). So if AU had charged me when they were meant to, that would obviously have taken the main charge over the 6 months now.
Sure it was authorised, BUT we were lead to believe that the sets were being shipped in June, so I don't see a problem with disputing the charges on account of that. I've e-mailed AU today saying I want to cancel my order - so I'll tell the CC people on Monday that I've e-mailed them and received no reply either (not a lie!!) All that along with the other complaints I've made about them I'm sure there will be no problems disputing.
If you really want the bonus material I'd probably hang in there with AU. I mean I'm sure that they'll ship them... I'm just not interested in the bonus material enough to have my money tied up with them any longer, that's all. You could always call your CC company for advise on the situation too? mine were really helpful when I called them originally, and made me feel a lot better.
And no, I totally agree with you - this whole 'ordeal' has definitely left a bad taste, which is a shame! :(
Concetta
Thanks Concetta
I think what I'll do is make my cc company aware and then email AU to try and get a definate responce about my order status (as I still don't know if they will ship it all together or in bits or what!) and any future shipping charges (fat chance of a reply I know!).
cheers
Richie
Anyone who has ordered with AU should read the latest posts on the Home Theater Forum thread (pages 13 & 14) at http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=66836
and also check out the various discussion at mscl.com http://www.mscl.com/forum
This is getting more stupid everyday. Everyone should check with their credit card companies about disputing the original charge from what is it? seven months ago!
I feel sorry for ever mentioning on this forum that this dvd set was ever happening. :(
What a load of ********, the post of Jeff Ulmer on the HTF sums up how I feel:

7 months after they make us pay in full for the set, anyone can order it from Best Prices for $52, and in all likelihood will have their product before those who preordered.
We had better see a rebate offered from AU to match what others are selling this set for AT THE VERY LEAST. Our money financed this whole fiasco.
I can say with certainty that I will NEVER fall for a scheme like this again, and if I see someone else trying to use this model, I will be relentless in making sure noone is suckered in by it. It may also be worthwhile to see whether or not the fraud perpetrated by AU warrants criminal investigation, especially due to the international nature.
OMG - What a complete farce this has turned out to be.I feel so sorry for anybody that pre ordered this "exclusive" set.
If it was me,I would be onto my cc company and cancelling my order today.Sure you'll miss the bonus disc and lunch box but youn can't be positive they will appear anyway and if they do they may appear as stand alone items a few months down the line anyway.
On a happier note for me,MSCL is my favourite show of all time and now I have the opportunity to pick the set up for about £50 in the next couple of months. :)
It is a sad state of affairs indeed. For those like me that pre-ordered ages ago you really only have 2 options.
1) Contact credit card and hope there is something they will do - although because of the length of time this has gone on, a number of credit cards have apparantly not been interested.
2) Wait for it to turn up. From what I have read, the chances of a refund ever turning up could be slim.
"I can say with certainty that I will NEVER fall for a scheme like this again, and if I see someone else trying to use this model, I will be relentless in making sure noone is suckered in by it. "
I wholeheartedly agree.

The sad thing is to begin with I totally supported the scheme as it was the fans of the program coming together to make it happen.
But AU have been totally useless throughout and seem to have cocked up every single stage.
After all the time and hassle I’ve gone through seeing it available on amazon.com was the final straw for me. If I didn’t think they’d cock up the cancellation of my order I’d stop it all now.
I can only voice my sympathies for all those utterly ****** by this, and I hope you all cancel at once.
Personally, I've just ordered from Amazon, and can't wait!

It's getting from bad to worse - I just caught up with all the news on the MSCL forums there. :(
Quote from Jason Rosenfeld:
"<I>Posted: Fri Oct 11, 2002 10:18 pm Post subject: Friday Update
I know that some people have been asking for a more civil tone, and I suppose that I should set an example. I've met some very intelligent and interesting people through this board, so I will take their advice and try to lighten up a bit.
However, I have been pretty caught up in emotions because it looks like my worst fears are becoming reality.
As of this writing, I can confirm the following FACTS:
1) BMG has still not been paid.
2) G Whiz has still not been paid.
3) If BMG is not paid in full, the discs intended for AU will go to Amazon and the other retailers before AU. You will have to wait until AU pays for the discs.
I am not posting here to spread panic, or to treat Ross badly, or anything of the sort. However, I am making the following recommendation:
Set a deadline of Wednesday, October 16.
If BMG has not been paid IN FULL, and if G Whiz has not been paid IN FULL by 10/16, please cancel your order and buy from a reputable site, such as Amazon. If you are fairly confident that this warning is correct, you can cancel now by calling 888-5-COMICS, or visiting http://www.drygrass.com/mscl.
Finally, I would just like to say that although AU might have asked certain people to not speak with me, I know a lot of people at a lot of companies and I will continue to provide accurate news.
Thanks,
Jason Rosenfeld</I>"

I think that says it all really.... especially when Ross from AU has been lying all week saying he's paid BMG etc... very sad.
I just hope everyone gets their money back one way or another, as it's been well over 6 months since most folk paid. :(
Concetta
Looks like its cancelling time and heading to Amazon folks....:(

If everyone starts cancelling AU may not have the funds to pay everyone and may go under before everyone gets their money. Lets face it if they don’t have the funds to pay BMG have they the money to re-fund our cards??
No matter what happens it's been so long that you can't dispute it with your credit card company.
I'm personally not going to cancel as I don't think they are competent of returning my funds. But I'm beginning to think I'm never going to see my money back or the discs.
I realise this was a new scheme and I’m very much behind the power to the people approach behind it but, the amount of hassle this has been has not been worth it.
Adge - don't give up! Fight the ************ for your money back, don't just submit!
I just think that if everyone pulls their money out now it will definitely fail, but if people stick in these despite the lack of confidence I have in AU the chance of it being a success is marginally greater.

You guys do know that Amazon.ca have listed this for about £40?
The whole thing is an insult to the fans who supported and attempted to get the project off the ground.
If AU were a British company I'd make a trip to their premises to firebomb it.
I just got this MSCL newsletter.....

[A] ANOTHER UNIVERSE - IS NO LONGER AN EXCLUSIVE RETAILER OF MSCL DVD
Another Universe is no longer THE exclusive retailer of the
"My So-Called Life" series (i.e., 19 episodes) on DVD. To be clear, one now has the option of purchasing a five disc set (i.e, 19 episodes) at various physical and online retailers. (See listing below under "OTHER RETAILERS OFFERING MSCL ON DVD".)

If anyone provides credible and verifiable information refuting these facts, we will promptly post corrections and amplifications to <http://www.mscl.com/mall/dvdbox.phtml>.
As of October 19, 2002, we have confirmed the following:
FACT: On October 17, 2002, Another Universe paid BMG for 4,000 units of "My So-Called Life" on DVD. (A single unit is comprised of one five-disc set that includes all 19 episodes of MSCL.)
FACT: As of October 18, 2002, GwhizOnline, the manufacturer of the MSCL lunchbox, has NOT been paid. Although the production of the MSCL lunch box had begun, it is presently on hold pending payment by Another Universe, or some other arrangement between the parties. (FYI: The production facility for the MSCL lunch box is in Hong Kong.)
FACT: Customers who have pre-purchased AUs "My So-Called Life" DVD Collectors Edition Set have reported -- on the so-called forum <http://www.mscl.com/forum/index.php> and elsewhere -- instances of: double and treble charges to their credit cards; unresolved billing issues; and, slow response times to their inquiries.
FACT: Another Universe says that it is offering a certificate of
authenticity:
"FYI: The first 2500 lunch box sets will include a Certificate of Authenticity, all other orders will lack the certificate but will still include all 19 episodes, the lunch box and bonus disk, all for $115.00." [This text, immediately above, appears on <http://www.anotheruniverse.com/mscldvd/>

Another Universe does not indicate what this certificate specifically authenticates, or what intrinsic or perceived value such a certificate offers.
FACT: To date, Another Universe has announced 2 shipping dates for the "My So-Called Life" DVD Collectors Edition Set. The dates announced were: June 18 and September 17. Neither of these shipping dates were met. As of October 18, 2002, AU has not announced a new shipping date.
Please consider these facts carefully when deciding whether to place an order with AnotherUniverse. Another update from Another Universe...
At long last the “My So-Called Life Complete DVD Set” will be shipping to everyone who ordered it from AnotherUniverse.com. We are sincerely sorry for all the delays in getting this project finished and for that reason we are shipping the DVD set as quickly as possible. The Lunch box and bonus DVD will be shipped free of charge at a later date. We look forward to everyone having the sets in the quickest possible time.
BMG (the manufacturer of the sets) will be shipping them to us on 10/25. It may take up to 5-7 days for the sets to reach our warehouse in California. We will send a short updated e-mail verifying receipt in our warehouse when it arrives. We will then begin shipping them to all customers no later than Monday, November 4th. If it is humanly possible, we will ship earlier. Our method of shipping will be USPS Priority Mail. We will be e-mailing each of you with your shipping confirmation/tracking number within 24 hours of it leaving our warehouse. All orders will be shipping freight free, no matter where in the world you are.
Included with the Bonus Disk and Lunchbox will be other bonus materials that Another Universe is sending you as an apology for the delays and a thank you for your patience in sticking with us. As soon as we have a definitive date as to when we will receive the lunchboxes from China, we will e-mail everyone and let you know.
We are genuinely sorry for the confusion and stress this has caused so many of you. We will diligently strive to make amends to all of our customers who have stuck with us this entire time. It is because of you, the fans, that we took on this project and because of your devotion to the show that you love that we will stick with this until we resolve every challenge put in front of us.

First impressions don't look good.
Many people are screaming that the picture quality is the worst they've ever seen on dvd, even VHS taped off TV looks better.
The whole thing looks like a bootleg and that includes the disc art and packaging.
A few people are happy to finally have the set on dvd but a worringly large number are posting there sets back for refunds. :|
Well, mine just arrived via UPS, along with a £28.37 (ouch) customs sting!! Not had a chance to put it in the player, but I will do later and comment on the quality.

Adge, I assume that’s not from DDD? You’d only be looking at @£11 if caught via them.
I got mine from amazon.com yesterday.
from the quick look I've had it looks the same as it did on TV. So it's not pristine but no worse than I remember - can't compare VHS as got rid of those off-telly recordings when this set was announced about a year ago!
Anyway, I'm just pleased to finally have this set in my hands!
Still waiting to hear from my credit card company about getting my money back from Another Universe though.
btw my Royal Mail customs charge was £12.15 (seems I can't get anything without getting stung! d'oh!!)

That's from AnotherUniverse, a company now ingrained in my brain never to use again...
Adge, sorry to hear about the frankley huge customs bill - are you sure it's correct?
Should be 3.5% import duty on declared amount.
The import duty figure is added to the declared amount.
17.5% VAT applied to whole figure then add whatever the "clearance" fee from DHL is.
So after all the crap from AU, because they charge almost twice what amazon etc charge the customs bill is twice as much too.
Again I'm sorry I ever brought this to the attention of this forum (not that there weren't plenty of other places to read about it!). I guess that if I don't my money back from AU (via my credit card company) then this will be my single most expensive DVD purchase. :|
The boxset was 99.98 USD
The bill broke down as
Taxes: £15.56
Duties: £ 2.81
Brokerage Surcharge: £10.00
I wouldn't have minded if AU was the only supplier, but I feared to cancel my order as I thought they'd go bust and I'd never see the cash. It's been a pricey afair this, but it is an item I've always wanted (I'm not going to check the quality out today as if they are nobby I'll have been stung twice in one day).

I say, has anyone who cancelled at Another Universe received a refund yet?
I'm still waiting, but I notice that a few astoinished souls at the MSCL Forum (http://www.mscl.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=10) seem to be getting lucky, old beans.
watched the pilot the other day and it did seem to lack colour.
the second episode seemed better, but its either that or nothing.

Everywhere seems to have this out of stock. Was it a limited run pressing? Will they ever make any more???
britboy1979
yes it was a limited run - don't know the exact figure but it's less than 10,000 (if you look around www.mscl.com they might know!)
The rights & the masters return to Buena Vista in April so depending on if they see it as a viable option they may yet produce their own version. see below links:

Just had this update via email.
btw I have finally had a refund from my credit card!

anyway here's that update from drygrass / Jason Rosenfeld:
-----------------------------------------------------------
My So-Called Life DVD Update
(Note to Hotmail and other webmail users, you may have to cut and paste the
links for them to work).
Summary:
1) A working number for AU.com 916-450-0707
2) No official word on bonus material.
3) Help in getting credit card refunds
3) AU/MSCL related sites and resources
First, I apologize for using mass mail to communicate with everyone, but
with thousands of people to reach, it is the only time/cost effective
method. As always, an unsubscribe link is available at the bottom of this
email. We will use this list sparingly. If you are still waiting for
bonus material or refunds, I recommend remaining on the list. It will not
be used very often. Nevertheless, I recognize that mass mail is
inherently intrusive, and I apologize once again.
Many customers continue to write to me to inquire about the status of their
overcharge refunds. Unfortunately, there has been no offical word from
AnotherUniverse.com. I am no longer in contact with them, but I have
continued to try to push for refunds and many customers have offered to
assist.
The main thing that people email me for is an AU.com phone number. AU.com
disconnected most of its numbers in the last months of December.
916-450-0707 was originally disconnected, but it is now back in operation.
There are no live operators, but you can leave a voicemail.
http://www.drygrass.com/mscl will remain in operation for the foreseeable
future, although AU.com has not logged in for over a month. Still, it is
not a bad idea to report a problem so that you can receive a record of the
problem if you need it in the future. (No need to resubmit problems, they
are all logged).
One thing that we have noticed is that some people were receiving credits
from their banks, while others were being declined because the charges
occured more than 60 days ago. It is my belief that by putting customers
in contact with each other, and letting them get the word out, they can
perhaps pressure AU *AND* their credit card companies to provide refunds.
Therefore, I am sending a list of sites that might be helpful in bringing
customers together and sharing advice. If you successfully received a
refund from AU or your credit card, there are many customers who would
appreciate your advice.
Here are some sites that you can visit to make a difference:

Jason Rosenfeld

Did anyone else get this e-mail today from Dry Grass Partners?
Hello,
First, this email does not include a survey. The purpose of this email is to ask you to consider filing a complaint with the Internet Fraud Complaint Center if you have not already done so. http://www.ifccfbi.gov
The My So-Called Life DVD pre-orders from AnotherUniverse.com began in February 2002, and it is hard to believe that 16 months have passed and we are still waiting for AnotherUniverse.com to deliver the bonus discs and lunchboxes that were part of the so-called "lunchbox edition," and their justification for charging nearly 2x the price offered by other retailers. The way many customers see it (from the emails I have received), AnotherUniverse.com owes them either the bonus items, or the difference in cost between the collectors edition and the regular retail version of the DVD box set.
Amazingly, the AU.com Web site still states that the lunchboxes and bonus discs shipped in December. I continue to receive emails from new customers who wonder why they have not received everything that they were promised.
I also get emails from customers who wonder why law enforcement seems to not care. I am not at liberty to write about my discussions with the law enforcement agencies that may or may not be involved in investigations of AU.com's business practices. I can only strongly hint that your IFCC complaints DO INDEED make a difference.
You might feel that you have wasted enough time on this ordeal, and I admit that it might take an additional 15 minutes to complete the IFCC form. However, I honestly believe that AnotherUniverse.com is betting that most customers won't speak up.
So, in closing, the purpose of this email is to ask you to consider filing a complaint with the IFCC if:
1) You are still due any sort of refund from AU.com at all.
2) You paid for the Lunchbox and Bonus disc edition and did not receive them (note: I realize that this is virtually everybody).
I intend to stick with this until every dollar is returned to customers, and until all customers receive what they were promised. If you no longer wish to receive these updates, please use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of this email, and you will be removed from the list immediately.
As always, if you have any questions, feel free to write to me at rosenfeld@drygrass.com. If you are waiting for a response to an earlier email, rest assured that I am working my way through them and you will receive a response. The next mass mail will include a survey and you will have a chance to indicate whether you filed a complaint. Individual data will not be shared, but I will publish the aggregate survey results.
Warm Regards,
Jason Rosenfeld

Yep got that same e-mail through last night... still deciding whether to lodge a complaint..
Still waiting on the lunch box & bonus disc. Last I heard they were having trouble getting 'em made up with the overseas company in charge of producing them.
I got my box set through last November... I'm just kinda fed-up with the whole mess. This Jason Rosenfeld guy seems to be going out of his way to make sure they follow through, so I'm still hoping the lunchboxes will arrive some day!
I try not to think of how much these discs have cost me & just enjoy 'em ;)
Just got the following email from a Colleen McNiece.
At long last the My So-Called Life lunchboxes are arriving at Another
Universe. After failing inspection twice (once in December, once in
February) and one long delay with the factory and export company not
letting the freight forwarder know that the lunchboxes were ready for pick
up; the lunchboxes are done, looking good and headed into the Another
Universe warehouse. We expect them to arrive in California within 3 weeks
and then a couple of days through customs and shipping to Sacramento.
As soon as they are received, Another Universe will be shipping them
along with the 1-hour interview with Marshall, Winnie and Ed. We
apologize for all the delays in shipping the MSCL bonus material, but are glad
to finally get it to you.
If you have had an address change since you received the MSCL boxed
set, and have not yet informed us, please e-mail us at
update@anotheruniverse.com with your old information and the new.
Include your order number (if you have it) to expedite the change.
If you are owed a refund from Another Universe for your order or
cancellation, please e-mail us at refunds@anotheruniverse.com for a refund
application and provide us:
Name
Address
City, State, Zip Country
Order Number
We will process your request in the order received.
Again, we apologize for the delays in the bonus material. We are
pleased to finally be able to get it to you.
Another Universe
With the mscl.com site and forum nowhere to be found I have no way of validating it. Mighty strange.
Anybody else get it? Anyone know what happened to mscl.com??

(Digging this thread up) Got this today, anyone else get this? More of a scam? I totally forgot about the lunchbox....
Dear former AnotherUniverse.com UK customers:
This email is, more or less, a verbatim copy of an email that went out to US customers over the last 2 months (with changes pertaining to UK shipping). It discusses the arrest of Ross Rojek, the shutdown of AU.com by the FBI and my *temporary* stewardship of your bonus materials (yes, I do have them in a safe place, but please read this email for more information), which I removed from the AU.com warehouse after receiving the ok from the FBI and the individual responsible for disposing of AU.com's assets.
------------
There have recently been some major developments in the IFCC/FBI investigation of AnotherUniverse and its CEO Ross Rojek. At first these developments made the effort to get the DVD bonus materials to customers seem hopeless, but everything changed last week, and I have now removed your bonus items from the AnotherUniverse.com warehouse. I have volunteered to try to get this merchandise to those who paid AnotherUniverse.com for it. Please read this email as it includes a lot of information. There is also a payment link for S&H at the bottom (the reasons will become clear when you read this email and the Operation Lunchbox Message Forum at http://www.anotheruniversesucks.org/forum
Ross Rojek, the CEO of AnotherUniverse.com was arrested by the FBI on April 13 for multiple counts of wire fraud, mail fraud and money laundering. There were multiple scams and the amount stolen totalled in the millions of dollars. AnotherUniverse.com has been closed down. All of Rojek's companies have been shuttered by law enforcement (July 7 note: as of this writing he is still in jail, awaiting trial).
In early May, I was contacted by former AnotherUniverse.com employees (all Ross Rojek employees from all of his various businesses are now unemployed), and told that there were approximately 1,900 MSCL lunchboxes and approximately 2,400 bonus DVDs sitting on five pallets at the warehouse. If not moved, these items would have become the property of the warehouse landlord.
After receiving a release from Justin Martin, who was winding down AU.com operations for the jailed (in lieu of $1,000,000 bail) Ross Rojek, I arranged to have the lunchboxes and bonus discs moved to a fulfillment facility in Sacramento, California.
If you don't recognize my name or if you never received emails from me before it is because I obtained this email list from Justin Martin on AU.com's last day of operations.
If we were dealing with only a hundred or so unfulfilled orders, I might have been able to avoid a shipping and handling charge. However, I am dealing with approximately 2,000-2,400 unfulfilled orders. We negotiated the best rate we could get (US $13.50), which is considerably lower than USPS or UPS for a package weighing in at 1 lb 13 oz. (The fee for US shipping was $8.47, if you want to compare).
****How UK Shipping and Handling fee of US $13.50 is Determined:
+Negotiated UK International Rate from third-party shipping company
+called Crossroads International Mailing Service (can take 2-3 weeks as
+opposed to UPS, which is faster, but almost 3x the price, and a bit
+expensive for a "bonus" item). The delivery on the UK side will be via
+Royal Post. (It is as if I sent via USPS Mail). $2.00 handling fee from
+JetXpressMail $1 which covers most, if not all of the paypal fees ($.30
+per transaction, plus 2.9%). PayPal Fees may vary because sometimes I
+pay Jetxpress via paypal to expedite orders and sometimes I may use a
+check to save on an additional 2.9% fee, but in any case, this covers
+the bulk of the PayPal fee).
I am including a payment link in this email. This link is not posted on any site, as I am only contacting people who are owed bonus material by AnotherUniverse.com. Please don't share it, as it will only make order verification more time consuming. Here is the link: !!EDIT!!
If it doesn't work for you and you are using a web-based email service, such as hotmail, you should paste the link instead of clicking on it. In fact, if you are using Hotmail, don't bother clicking, just paste it into a separate window (two months of experience with US customers helped to work out some of the kinks).
Finally, if you have any questions that are not personal in nature, please post them to the Operation Lunchbox message forum. If I can answer your question publicly, it will save time and also provide a full record of correspondence for all to see. Likewise, I will keep the message forum updated with the progress of this project. There is currently a photo of the merchandise in its new location, and I welcome you to join in the conversation there.
The AU.com experience left a lot of people (myself included) shell shocked. If you feel uneasy about receiving this email, I invite you to check the forums, talk to other members and research me onlinw oe offline before deciding whether to send any payments.
Best Regards,
Jason Rosenfeld
"Operation Lunchbox"
914-588-4800
(Please see the message forum for information about why only PayPal is accepted). Please be sure to include your current shipping information. In any case, please read the disclaimers on the Operation Lunchbox forum (http://www.anotheruniversesucks.org/forum) before you order. The merchandise from the AU warehouse is being sent out on an "as-is" basis. While I don't anticipate too many problems, I can only fulfill from the existing inventory. I plan to continue this project until August 13, 2004 (extended from July 13 due to the complexity of this project). It is unlikely that I will be able to do anything if merchandise is not claimed before the project ends, but I will try to give everyone ample time.

(Digging this thread up) Got this today, anyone else get this? More of a scam? I totally forgot about the lunchbox....
Definitely not a scam - this is from Jason Rosenfeld, who's been the good guy in all of this - go to the link and read the forums - if you pay the man, you'll get your lunchbox and bonus DVD.
US people have received the lunch box as it's appeared on ebay a few times
I also remember someone mentioning they had it on the HTF thread.
Yeah I got the email yesterday. Went on the new forum and double checked with Jason Rosenfeld and other users before ordering. I had forgotton all about these items (even though I'd been keeping up with Ross Rojek's arrest etc), will be nice to finally have the set as it was supposed to be in the first place!
Funny how since a few fans got together to try and get this show released on dvd there has been a HUGE explosion in TV on dvd! Buena Vista should be kicking themselves for passing up the distribution of this series (seeing as now they produce some of the best sets out there - Alias etc). Ah well.
Maybe us UK people who order this lunchbox can post here when they get them?
Remember that the link in the email is for people who ordered in the first place only. Jason Rosenfeld says on the forum that all orders will be checked and verified against the original list of orders so there is no point in sharing the link anyway.
Anyway I hope this little operation goes smoothly! - only been waiting two and half years!
I've paid, but since ordering have moved house and I use a different mail account for PayPal... I've posted on their forums to check this isn't a problem, I'm sure they will be in touch if it is.....
Adge, just saw your post on there. I think Jason will email you if there is anything that needs checking - at least that's how I understand it. He was quick to answer my questions in that same thread yesterday (I'm goldfishrich btw) so I expect he'll post something later (when the US wakes up!).
He did, we'll wait and see, if it arrives I'll post here can others do the same?
yup, I'll do the same

Can I resurrect this thread please?
I would like to get my hands on this dvd and I can't believe that it's not in production anymore. My VHS (off the tv) copies have died (it has been nearly 10 years!) but I can't replace them.
Anyone know of any rumours for a re-release?
It would sell bucket-loads shurely?
KP
FINALLY got my lunchbox and 'so-called extras' dvd today  - only been waiting a couple of years!!!!! :D
After all the talk on the 'operation lunchbox' site about customs labelling and what to declare or not the box came with nothing on it! weird! but it got delivered no problem.
Anyway I'm just glad to have it! It was sent on July 30th and I didn't have any kind of email notification to say it was actually in transit (but just noticed a thread on the site saying the UK boxes went out on July 27th).
Has anyone else got theirs yet? Adge?
KipperPhill, sorry I don't know where the actually 5 disc dvd set can be bought now. After the whole debacle (as per this thread) I ended up just buying it from Amazon.com to ensure I actually got one - but that was almost 2 years ago now! If they don't have anymore I'm guessing it's gone unless Buena Vista decide to re-visit the title in the future? Your best bet now would be ebay I guess but try all the other US and Canadian etailers first coz you never know who just might have stock left!

It dropped to a stupidly low price which had everyone who bothered to pre-order it up in arms as they all paid a great deal and at that time still had no extras disc or a lunch box anyway, but then it just disapeared almost over night.
There was some talk of a more mainstream re-issue but that seems to have gone quiet now as well.
Three sets are available on ebay at the moment.

What is on the extras disc? I didn't get the email referred to (which may just have been ISP problems or an overzealous spam filter) and haven't got round to ordering it. Is it too late now? I'm not bothered with lunchbox packaging though.
Gary, if you get the lunchbox you get the extra dvd, they don't come separately.
The dvd is pretty pointless tbh. It's got a fairly interesting 1 hour interview with the 3 show creators (single shot of them on a sofa, static camera - really hi-tech!) but this could (and really should!) have been turned into an edited commentary on the pilot episode!
The other extra on the dvd is a completely pointless 'tour' of the production company (Bedford Falls) offices which is just camcorder footage of the office on the day the interview was shot. There is no context to the footage, it's utterly pointless and has nothing to do with "My so-called life" anyway! It's just there to fill disc space!
So if you are not bothered with not having the lunchbox you really aren't missing out!
The email was sent to people who originally ordered via Another Universe who were still owed 'bonus' materials from back in 2002 when the whole debacle took place.
You could email Jason Rosenfeld and he can double check your original order against his list of people outstanding I believe.
Have a look around the 'Operation Lunchbox' forum as this will give you all the info: http://www.anotheruniversesucks.org/forum/index.php
