You know when you find those threads that are just what you have been after but they disappear into oblivion well it's just not good enough ;). For me it has to be Foreign Language Films or World Cinema call it what you will.

With the Mods permission I would like to start this thread which I will place a link to in my signature so that members can get easier access to it rather than have to do several searches. There have been several threads on this issue which I will track down in due time but for starters try the following and scroll through this particualr thread as well as there are some excellent reviews and links:

GENERAL DISCUSSION

COMBINATIONS

This post (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/guides/guide-display/-/USJ9TDJ8NQWY/ref=cm_bg_dp_l_1/102-4074294-7933755) at Amazon is a good starting point as it contains some classics and links to the individual film specs.

The following are not exclusive to their titles but more concentrated in those areas.

FRENCH

Foreign Film Recommendations (http://217.33.154.203/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44836&highlight=foreign) started by Geek

Comprehensive list of largely mainstream European titles (particularly French) with the odd South American and Asian. Contains a few links for certain French, German and Mexican titles and links to more general e-tailers.

International & Art House (http://217.33.154.203/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59442) started by zenza

Whilst this thread started as a request for South American and Middle Eastern films it again includes largely European recommendations but some not included in the thread above.

Recommend a French Film (http://217.33.154.203/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=56266&highlight=Foreign) started by Fever Dawg and French Films (http://217.33.154.203/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51537&highlight=french) started by mattjames355 stick to french recommendations and both contain several links to main suppliers and specific titles.

Also check out the DVD Times feature here about French films with English Subs (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=140512). This thread contains information about French released discs including general mainstream releases as well as those originating in France.

SPANISH

Spanish Recommendations (http://217.33.154.203/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=57769) started by old zenza again :)

Some great Spanish recommendations here with Hendrik supplying another superb list for consideration.

DVD Go have the occasional bargain as noted by jonathan.ein this thread (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=910611#post910611) which also contains a few recommendations

ITALIAN

Suspiria (http://217.33.154.203/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45595&highlight=Foreign) started by Morpheus2000

An interesting read if, as I was, you are tempted and then confused by the legend that is Suspiria.

RUSSIAN

Ruscico & Tarkovsky (http://217.33.154.203/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54431) started by malburger

Some valuable links and great details on both Tarkovsky DVDs and The Russion Cinema Council (RUSCICO (http://www.ruscico.com/)) themselves.

Russian Cinema Recommendations (http://217.33.154.203/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=50334&highlight=artificial) started by steve lucas

Another excellent list of highly recommended russian films that includes links to several Tarkovskys' but also work by other directors.

The R2 Artificial Eye release of Solaris, the film that inspired the thread above, may have some possible subtitle flaws as discussed here (http://217.33.154.203/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=55564&highlight=artificial) but is highly recommended by many in this thread (http://217.33.154.203/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=50334&highlight=french) which also includes several other highly regarded Russian films.

The popular Andrei Rublev is available as both an R2 Artificial Eye and a Criterion release. A discussion of their individual merits can be found here (http://217.33.154.203/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=50275&highlight=artificial) and here (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=721968#post721968)

Stalker (http://217.33.154.203/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=47236&highlight=artificial) is available from Ruscico but another 2-disc R2 Artificial Eye release is due soon.

SPECIFIC TITLES

An A to Z of those titles that have generated individual dedicated thread

El Dia de la Bestia personal favourite although I'm not alone (http://217.33.154.203/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=56953&highlight=french) in my admiration for Iglesia's horror-comedy

The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeousie both astounds and confuses (http://217.33.154.203/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58509&highlight=french) at the same time!

La Haine is recommended by many but go for the French (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=152934&highlight=haine) release.

In The Mood For Love has quite rightly attracted a great deal of interest. Check out the following threads for similar films (http://217.33.154.203/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=61573&highlight=mood+for+love), a review of the Criterion version (http://www.mondo-digital.com/ashesoftime.html) and a comparison of the French versus Criterion release (http://217.33.154.203/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=55946&highlight=mood+for+love)

Three Colours the definitive must have trilogy has generated more than its fair share of discussion. Try this thread (http://217.33.154.203/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9745&highlight=artificial) for starters

Le Trou some very positive Forum reviews here (http://217.33.154.203/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59134&highlight=french) and here (http://217.33.154.203/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58716) and are echoed in the DVD Times review (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=605&story=2722)

Battle Royale has just been re-released as a SE (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=152839) and is a must see in my opinion. grab the new disc of you want or try the cheapo R3 first to see if it is your cup of tea.

MISCELLANEOUS

dddhouse seem to have been attracting customs (http://217.33.154.203/forums/showthread.php?threadid=57842) recently whilst I just had a 4 disc delivery without problems from coolashop.
Others (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=63082) still stand by dddhouse.

Criterion

DVD Box Office (http://www.dvdboxoffice.com/) DVD Planet (http://www.dvdplanet.com/)

Obviously a list of potential suppliers would not be complete without mentioning Criterion retailers. This is always an area of contention but both of the distributors above appear the cheapest currently. I believe the majority of Forum members prefer DVD Box Office as they are customs friendly and Planet can be a pain to register with.

Please let me know of any decent suppliers, or equally any that have caused problems, and I will post them here.

Thank you lorenzo.

This is exactly what I wanted; a thread solely for foreign and international films. I am glad you started this thread for all of us who love foreign films.

I would be interested in your collection of foreign films. I know you have Taxi 1 and 2, which I also have. I would be grateful if you could you provide a link to your collection of foreign films.

zenza - I thought you would approve :)

To be honest it was several of your threads that gave me the idea in the first place. I had read them but lost track and had to search for related threads. I specifically remember the first thread started by Geek as I printed it out and promised myself I would get as many off it as I could but lost the print out

My intention was just to have a summation thread which would disappear into oblivion but I would keep a link to it in my signature and thereby have immediate access to all the past threads. I was unsure about breaching the terms and conditions regarding e-tailers so contacted the mods who kindly made it a sticky - nice one Colin

I have several foreign language films in my collection but am ashamed by their obscurity relative to my 'blockbuster' titles. Having said that most forum members seem to adopt a change of interest after a while here and I am no exception so expect a big change in the next few months. To check my collection simply click on my humble collection in my signature below.

Mail me too if you want and please let me know here of any recommendations as you come across them, for both film and retailer alike.

NoelM - nice one. Just what I wanted to do when I had time :)

Really fancy Andrei Rublev - any ideas on best release / region? I heard R2 was possibly the way to go. Can't wait for the Deklog(s) either.

Keep 'em coming everyone.

Noel M
05-03-2002, 09:45
I haven't seen the R2 release of Andrei Rublev yet, but from what I can gather, both Artificial Eye and Ruscico R2 releases are identical and are excellent. The R1 Criterion has a different cut of the film and has different extras - it's not anamorphic however. The consensus seemed to be that both were necessary if you were a big fan of the film, but otherwise the R2 is a good place to start.

Gary Couzens

Hi Noel, very useful list of Artificial Eye releases. Here are some additions/corrections...

ANDREI RUBLEV - actually runs 174 mins

BEAU TRAVAIL - is 1.66:1 anamorphic

BLACKBOARDS - is DD 2.0 Mono. (I think most of the other DD2.0 releases play as Dolby Surround prologic)

LAST RESORT - is 1.78:1 anamorphic

MERCI POUR LE CHOCOLAT - 1.78:1 anamorphic. Subtitles fixed. I'll be posting a review to DVD Times by the weekend.

SOLARIS - actually runs 160 mins.

Noel M

Thanks for the information, Gary. I've updated the post. Actually this is why the list is useful, because the information on the packaging itself isn't always correct.

This is definitely a thread I want to keep in touch with . we have a number of french films , Jean de florette , Life is Beautiful , but there are so many good films I would like to see again .

One such is Journey of Hope . I keep trawling the good DVD sites , DVDBO etc trying to see if it is coming but so far no good . Farewell My Concubine is coming soon I think . At least on R1 . If anyone has any good suggestions for sites where international films are profiled I would be delighted to hear from them .

Hello cliveb and welcome to the forums :)

I think it would be a good idea to have a list of the better foreign film review sites particularly if they have info on upcoming releases. lorenzo - what do you think?

lorenzo
09-03-2002, 11:13
Absolutely - tell us what they are and I'll post them above. This is all fairly new to me too so any info would be gretaly appreciated.

As a heads up several of the foreign language films released by Criterion have recently been reduced inlcuding Le Trou (see review above by Tristan H), Rififi amongst others. DVD Box Office (http://www.dvdboxoffice.com) have some great deals as do DVD Planet (http://www.dvdplanet.com/QuickSearch.asp) although manyn have been stung by the latter's penchant for attracting customs plus registration can be a little taxing. DVDBO are in Canadian funds by the way so don't be put off by what appear high US prices and delivery is free or included however you like to think of it ;)

Noel M
11-03-2002, 15:29
Farewell My Concubine is coming soon I think . At least on R1 .

It's been out on R1 for quite a while. The quality is absolutely superb, even though it is not anamorphic. It contains the longer director's cut, adding and extending scenes that were not in the UK theatrical or video release.

kdart
11-03-2002, 21:01
There are two sources for upcoming releases they are:
DVDBeaver (http://www.dvdbeaver.com/) - Click on Foreign Film Release Calender
CriterionDVD (http://www.criteriondvd.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2366&FORUM_ID=7&CAT_ID=3&Topic_Title=Foreign%2FArt%2FIndependent+Film+DVD+Preorder+List+II&Forum_Title=DVD+Discussions+and+Bargains)

ps. dvdfr is not a retailer but is a news, review site, and fnac.com is a retailer and does not have reviews, just occasional synopsis and rarely verbose details of extras. There is also another French retailer alapage.com (http://www.alapage.com/).

pps. I am putting together a website called FrenchFilmsOnDVD (http://www.frenchfilmsondvd.com/default.htm) , here is a link (http://www.frenchfilmsondvd.com/EnglishFriendly.php) which is a page that shows you all the English friendly releases that I have entered so far.

Have fun (If Mods, Admins view this as advertising, it is :) but it is a hobby site and not intended to make money)

Edited to link to front page, old link deleted

lorenzo and kdart - the link is fine. The conflict would come if there were affiliate links to sites to buy the DVDs as the forums relies on raising money from affiliate schemes to keep running. Otherwise the site looks like a very useful resource.

Glad to see the supernatural links has been put in too. Very interested in some of those :)

Excellent idea, Lorenzo. It's very useful indeed.

I don't have much more to add at the moment but here are a couple of foreign films that I recently watched on DVD and rather enjoyed:

German: "Fitzcarraldo" R1 Anchor Bay - directed by Werner Herzog and starring Klaus Kinksi. Here's a review: http://www.dvdreview.com/fullreviews/fitzcarraldo.shtml

Italian: "Companeros" - a very funny Spaghetti western directed by Sergio Corbucci and starring Franco Nero and Tomas Milian with score by Ennio Morricone that I can't get out of my head. If you like the Leone/Eastwood films then you should like this. I much prefer this to Corbucci's "Django" (reviewed for DVD Times by Michael Brooke). Here's a review of the Companeros DVD: http://www.dvdauthority.com/companeros.asp

Will add more later!

I have heard of this and if I recall correctly someone (?dtsrules) bought or sold it a while back. At least it had the word Kingdom in the title. Just want to say that I have just watched the hit mexican film Y Tu Mama Tambien and found it to be a very engrossing film.

I got the region 3 dvd and the picture and sound was excellent even though it wasn't anamorphic. It did have a snapper case though which I hate.

Still, I'm not complaining.

Anyone remember a "Chage and Aska" song ages ago (circa '95) on The Box?

It was called "Castles in the Sky" or "Castles in the Air", it had a anime video featuring two men in Biohazard suits freeing a winged girl from a research lab...

Was this actually from a film? Anyone got any ideas or am I going mad?

Vietnamese films: At the Height of Summer is very good, and also was one of the nominees for Best Picture Quality in the DVD Times 2002 Awards (great, glowing colour fidelity, unfortunately some edge-enhancement)
Seasons is also supposed to be good and 'Westerner friendly' but unfortunately not available in R2 with English subtitles so far as I know (I haven't checked all regions, so if anyone knows of anywhere ...). If you speak French or Vietnamese it's available in France.

German films: The Princess and the Warrior (www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=2097465) is one of my favourite films, and the R2 DVD is reference quality in the picture and sound department (don't buy the R1 as it is cut). This film is by the same team as Run Lola Run but a different kind of film.

Indian films: great thread here (www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=159844)

Mexican films: Y Tu Mama Tambien, obviously. Also well worth watching is Rodriguez' El Mariachi (comes on the flip side of the sequel, Desperado starring Antonio Banderas, but El Mariachi is a much better and more poignant film, even though in Spanish and shot with a budget of around $10,000)

How weird is that? I have just been trying to track down some of Tran Ahn Hung's films and came here to post a few links for me to update the first page at a later date

I have The Vertical Ray of The Sun (aka: At The Height of Summer, A la Verticale de L'ete) and love it especially as you say because the picture is so vibrant. Indeed, come to think of it I guess La Fille Sur Le Pont (see above) is to B&W what VRotS is to colour.

Here are a couple of short but informative Forum threads to his films ..

Films by Tran Anh Hung (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=153240&highlight=papaya) Vertical Ray of the Sun (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=121643&highlight=papaya)

DVDZone2 (http://www.dvdzone2.com/dvd/detail.asp?id=115727) have details on the 2-disc version of Cyclo and Scent of Green Papaya but it is listed as OOS :(

YesAsia (http://www.dvdasian.com/cgi-bin/dvdasian/scan/st=db/co=yes/sf=country/se=Vietnam/nu=0/op=rm/sf=adult/se=yes/nu=0/op=rn/tf=description/ml=10.html) have a few listed and may be another option. They have Cyclo down as w/s and 5.1 but then again so dodddhouse (http://www.dddhouse.com/cms/dddhouse/en/index.jsp?action=productDetail&productID=347)?? I thought the R3 was 2.0 and letterboxed only

The HK R3 of Cyclo is 1.85:1 anamorphic and has 5.1 sound. Haven't watched it for a while, but if I remember correctly the image quality is pretty good - colours are vivid and bright (as they need to be in a Tran Anh Hung film). There is the usual HK DVD spots of dust here and there, but otherwise it is not bad. Sound is great. I'm still considering upgrading to the French release myself though...

I have the French double feature release of Scent of Green Papaya / Cyclo. I haven't actually opened it, but I'll do so this weekend and post up what I think. It cost about £20 from Amazon.fr (before postage). I'm still trying to persuade Play to sell French releases - they are thinking about it so it would be worth it for others to email them too: info@play247.com

redio - see the Princess & the Warrior thread on the reviews forum. At least one whole scene is cut, not for rating reasons but just because they thought US audiences wouldn't understand it. In contrast, the UK R2 release of this film is a very high quality disk, I would say.

Pusher (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0117407)

Excellent debut film by Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn who also gives a detailed English commentary.

He Loves Me ... He Loves Me Not (A La Folie ...)

Excellent French film in the Hitchcockian tradition - starring Audrey Tautou to boot.

If it's not too late, whatever you do, do not read reviews of this film in advance, and do not read the IMDb entry, as many reviews and IMDb comments contain major spoilers (the worst spoiler of all is the main headline comment on IMDb - the guy ought to be banned). Just be happy with the Tomatometer rating of 71%.

Where did you pick it up?

DVDSplash, I think ... but it is a UK release so it should be available everywhere.

I notice there's an R3 version available for under £9 delivered from the likes of coolashop

I would guess that the UK R2 disk is much better than the R3 though. The quality of the transfer is amongst the best I have ever seen (French sourced transfer, you see), and there are plenty of subtitled extras too. And of course the UK disk is PAL so intrinsically 20% better.

There are some good UK releases of foreign films in Play's current 2 for £16 offer. I have picked up: Sur Mes Levres, Le Gout des Autres, and Comment J'ai tue mon Pere. In the offer there are also Ma Femme est Une Actrice, Rohmer's The Lady and the Duke, Tykwer's The Princess and the Warrior (much better than Run Lola Run, I would say), and Zhang Yimou's Happy Times.

I would also recommend Ma Femme est unbe Actrice and The Princess and the Warrior

Just noticed there is also a Columbia sale currently, including the very highly recommended The Road Home (by Zhang Yimou as well - this is the most romantic film I have ever seen, if you can overcome it being in Mandarin and starting out in black and white) and also The Emperor and the Assassin.

Sorry for multiple posts but there is also Subway, my favourite French film of all time. And several other Luc Besson films: Nikita, Le Dernier Combat, Joan of Arc ...

Would someone mind editing the front page so the links work, please.

Looking into it, it just seems most links point to an old IP address instead of: www.thedvdforums.com/...

The links do still work when amended to include the formention url.

Thank you

:)

I spotted Nikita and Subway criminally cheap at Blackstar.co.uk - £5.99 methinks (even cheaper with one of their £3 vouchers!)

I think that those links represent old dead threads that have not been accessed for a while hence their demise. Not sure they can be resurrected so to speak but will ask the mods.

I will try and update them and delete those that no longe function but have little time currently - sorry. Use what you can though and please post new ones so I can update them accordingly

Thanks, jacquesbrel, your post was in the nick of time, you just saved me £10!!! Strange, Play are not normally undersold by Blackstar, Blackstar must be getting more aggressive (and I notice Blackstar are doing free post and packing now which they never used to). Don't you just love competition?

Just a quick mention for City of God - an excellent and thoroughly entertaining film.

The voice over remionded me very much of my old favourite Goodfellas and whilst many films have tried and failed to use such narrative City of God does it fantastically.

I watched the R3 DTS and enjoyed both the sound and picture. Certainly ample for the price.

Go get it

Thought I'd bump this old thread on the occasion of the anniversary of its death

Thought there may be something of interest in it for some considering we have now have our own World Cinema forum

of course that Spoorlos at #10 in the first list is "The Vanishing" a joint Dutch/French production which is a classy thriller film.
Can anyone shed any light on the others?
