I am interested in purchasing the Criterion editions of the above (Musashi Miyamoto; Duel At Ichijoji Temple; Duel At Ganryu Temple) for use on my Region 2 player. Can these three discs be played on a Region 2 player ? The reason I ask is that I have visited several sites and all of them show Musashi Miyamoto as being encoded for Region 0 while Duel at Ichijoji Temple and Duel at Ganryu are shown as encoded for Region 1 which seems strange.

Hi Hugh,

Got mine in my hand at the moment (!) and they read as follows:

Musashi Miyamoto - region 1
Duel At Ichijoji Temple - no mention of region encoding
Duel At Ganryu Temple - region 1

Which seems bizarre ! Hope that is of assistance,

Simon

You may also want to check out Michael Brooke's definitive guide to regions and reviews (which lists all of the Samurai films as region 1 :( ) here:

Simon

Thanks for all your help. I thought I read somewhere that all Criterions were Region 0 encoded but obviously that is not the case.

Horses for courses.

It depends how Criterion license the product from the studio in question, some are happy for them to be region 0 and hence playable throughout the world, others stipulate that Criterion will only get the rights in they have a limited (region 1) release.

Have a goosey at the list for full details.

Criterion discs are region-free unless they’re compelled by the rights holder to make them Region 1 – examples of the latter include the Buena Vista titles (<I>Armageddon, The Rock, Chasing Amy, Rushmore</I>) and the Toho Japanese titles (the Samurai trilogy and the Kurosawa titles).

In the case of the latter, I suspect the Japanese owners wanted to keep the region 2 NTSC market to themselves – which makes perfect commercial sense.

Oh, and I've got some good news about the Criterion list - when clearing out my hard drive at work I found an earlier draft of the long-missing A-K list! I'll clean it up a bit and upload it later today.

Great news - that list really is a handy reference tool :)

Criterion are listing a new boxed set of the Samurai Trilogy for May 2004 available at a reduced price and containing all three of the current discs. Typical! I've just received my copy of Samurai when I read this news!

The transfers on all three are absolute crap, though. I'm not going near them until Criterion have done a complete restoration and remaster. You can see actual tape damage to the master used for the DVD at times!

Oh wonderful:( really looking forward to watching this now! The R2 versions are supposed to be awful as well aren't they? Is there a decent version available?

I thought this one (from CD-wow) was a bootleg when it arrived, the cover design is awful and the liner notes primative to say the least.

same here.

Its perfectly watchable though.

really bad discs by Criterion standards though. And i paid £15 for each of em !

i kinda like grain and print damage, kinda adds to the charm  but not what i pay for.

I just noticed that this thread was brought back from the dead exactly two years since the last post.

you should be alright with DVDPacific, i have bought a lot of stuff from them from multiple dvds (4 or 5) in one box to a couple of copies of the Hithcock Crietrion boxset (which is 5 films 6dvds ) and never had any custom charges.

i was joking about print damage. But i am a fan of film grain, i like it  its like the pops and clicks on vinyl :dork:

and as for DVDpacific, if they are getting caught, where should we order our R1s from ?
