ive heard the docu on R1 is longer than the one on R2, is this true ?

why is it longer ?

i can always find the R2 going cheap. Does anyone know where to get R1 for cheapish price ?

The documentary is indeed shorter on the R2 release. Its the BBC Mark Kermode one, and from memory its about 30 mins shorter on the R2 release.

I have no idea why though!

It's shorter because they've completely chopped poor old Kermode from the documentary. So it's all to-camera interviews from the cast and crew.

Warner screwed up, they sent the wrong version of the documentary for mastering of the R2/4 discs.

They didn't fix the fault because at the time they said they could not justify the expense of creating a new master for the disc and repressing them.

Couldn't they have added the full documentary to the 'Version You've Never Seen' writers cut DVD?

They had a licence to use it with version on the The Exorcist DVD, they didn't have a license to use it with The Exorcist: Version You've Never Seen which would have meant paying out for a new set of rights to use it.

It's not just Mark Kermode that is missing on the R2, the're are definitely some more little tidbits to be heard on the R1. I own both versions (yep, I like the film) and the R1 doc has more stuff about the soundtrack and the effects as far as I remember. I'll try and give it another look to see what else differs.
One thing I do know is that both these docs miss at least one thing from the original BBC doc: that one also contained an interview with Mercedes McAmbridge (who provided the demon voice). No idea where that went!

do you think i should spend the extra to get the R1 ? or are the extra scenes not worth the money ?

cos i ive heard the commentary stinks, so a good docu will make it up, also heard the docu on The Exorcist is one of the best. 30 mins extra is quite some time !

If you're a big fan of the movie and would like the extra bits go for the R1 doc. It basically has more Blatty background on the story (and the actual case he based it on), an in depth look at the casting, a bit more about the editing, a terrific story about original soundtrack composer Lalo Schifrin (who was lucky Friedkin didn't kill him, judging by the interviews) and some 10 minutes that look at the reception of the movie. Together with Mark Kermode's introductions (that actually give the doc more of a creepy feel :D) and a couple of extra film clips/inserts it adds up to some 28 minutes extra material.
