You can <i>rent</i>? them? People like us have to actually <i>buy</i> them to check them out, and we still don't know what we're getting.

For something different, rent My Sassy Girl. A 2hour 17min(!) romantic comedy. For some reason it appeals to people who are not usually into romcoms. Maybe it's because the main guy gets beaten up constantly, which is funny.

Also, there are a lot of subtle bits that can be picked up on multiple viewings... "multiple viewings of a romantic comedy?" I hear you say. I can't believe it myself, but it has happened. This is one of my favourite Korean movies.

Note: English subtitles are bad - It's more like a script (as in, whenever a character speaks, they add character names/actions, like "Gyeon-Wo (surprised at the sight of his own reflection): AAAAAHH!"). After a while, you won't notice them, though.

All I can say is "OUCH". Not for the squeamish and it's not a horror film.

I've watched the first 2/3rds of <i>Memento Mori</i> (Damn Mei Ah DVD :brickwall) and it's a cool atmospheric movie (so far)

I had a Korean DVD blow out yesterday and ordered;

<I>Memento Mori</i> (Spectrum release)
<I>Friend</i>
<i>Nowhere to Hide</i> (Spectrum release)
<i>Kids Return</i> (Japanese) Korean DVD tho'

<i>Whispering Corridors</i> is indeed Korean in fact <i>Memento Mori</i> is a 'kind of' sequel altho' it bears no relation, I believe.

Barking Dogs Never Bite

Released by Spectrum DVD
Korean R3 (Only)
NTSC Colour
109 Mins

OAR 1.85:1 Anamorphic
DVD-9 Korean DD5.1 and DD2.0
English Subs (Good)

Extras
- Cast and Director Bios (Korean Only)
- Audio Commentary (No Subs)
- Interview With Bae Doo-na (No Subs)
- Storyboard of Key Scenes
- Theatrical Trailer
- Highlight (Preview Of Movie)
- Music Video
- OST

A relatively clean print with subdued colours but solid blacks. The DD5.1 sound is also clear with a good jazz soundtrack. No real Complaints.

A comedy drama that is light on drama but still full of sharp and interesting observations about life with a Korean flavour. Directed by first time director BONG Jun-ho and starring LEE Sung-jae (Public Enemy) and my favourite Korean actress Bae Doo-na (Take Care Of My Cat, Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance). The story involves living on a grey faceless housing block, annoying yapping dogs, one man's mission to get a peaceful nights sleep and an estate clerk to right the wrongs of the world (well in her neighbourhood anyway).

The Koreans have a black sense of humour especially when dogs are involved, it pulls no punches and its fresh to watch because it doesn't hold back. The female lead (Bae Doo-na) and her rotund friend are a riot to watch and they provide all the biggest laughs. A great little movie with an ending that makes you feel good about our mundane existence which we all share no matter where you live in the world.

Highly Recommended.

(The cheaper HK DVD is great value at about US$5)

(Korean Spectrum DVD screen grab)

2nd film, Nowhere to Hide

The lowdown - Its all flashy editing with absolutely no plot and very little action, thats all there is too it ... oh yeah theres lots of running in it too ...

Technical - The HK R3 DVD is widescreen 2:35:1 DD5.1 barebones and cheap also about HK$60.

The DVD suffers from its low compression rate, the blacks are never black and it suffers from artefacts, the picture is also inconsistently sharp in one scene while at other times the picture is soft.

After the initial wow factor (1st 5mins) it gets boring real quick as everything about it is 2 dimensional.

Poor DVD and Poor Film...

The Isle on VCD at friends house ... 3rd in my modern day korean film exploration. The isle is a film that relies completely on the unusual setting of floating fishing holiday homes on a scenic lake.

Its completely different from what your likely to ever find in western cinema and it would be hard for me to categorise this if I tried. Nothing really goes on in this movie, there is no plot and very little character development but its intriguing nevertheless.

The film contains acts of cruelty to animals and to humans which only leads me further to believe that Korean cinema is lax in their regulations or their very down to earth people.

Worth watching just to see what directors will do to catch the ever decreasing human attention span.

No. 4 - Friend

Story about 4 boys who grew up together ... 2 become gangsters but the plot is not as important as the message it puts through ... Always stick by and believe your friends no matter what the circumstances.

Again Korean cinema has shown me what it is to live in a violent world. Teachers physically abusing students, students abuse each other and then they grow up and kill each other ... what a happy world Koreans inhabit :)

The above approach to film making has given me the same sort of feeling and satisfaction that a paul verhoeven movie gives me ... no stone is left unturned and everything is revealed before your very eyes. You can accuse Korean film makers of not leaving anything to the imagination but I like this approach to film making as it tends to be stuff I have not encountered before.

It would be a fair assumption that what we see today in Korean cinema will be reflected in western films 10 - 20 years from now ... I've always thought paul verhoeven was a lone revolutionary but in Korean cinema there are a whole army of them.

Shiri - OK the Korean film that probably sparked of all the present interest in Korean movies today.

If it was not for all the violence particularly at the beginning then this film will be no different from any other special agent espionage scenario movie. Professionally made and has a lot of action. However the love plotline is what made it interesting for me despite it being cliche but it worked.

The edko DTS DVD I rented is a DVD9 which explains the rather excellent picture on this disc unlike Friend above which was on a DVD 5 and had lots of associated compression artefact problems, despite having all the right colours and clarity. Shiri had none of these problems.

The DTS soundtrack was only average as the rears were hardly used despite the amount of bullets let off in this movie.

The aspect ratio is not stated on the DVD cover and I have been trying to find out on the net at the usual places but it is only listed as 1:66:1 which I can tell you is not.

To me it looked liked an anamorphic 2:35:1 print or an standard 1:78:1 print. Anyone have any ideas about this?

*rented this dvd before I had powerdvd so I can not confirm aspect ratio.

Anyone watch that movie on Channel 5 last night, <I>American Dragons</i> (http://uk.imdb.com/Title?0118601). I wouldn't have bothered normally but it co-starred Joong-Hoon Park of <I>Nowhere to Hide</i> fame.

It turned out to be a average cops-from-different-countries-team-up-affair but it was cool.

Exactly my feelings on Shiri, a rather heavily cliched film raised above the norm by an intriguing romantic subplot & a healthy splash of violent action set-pieces.

I have a small feeling you may also feel the same as me about Bichunmoo:- that it's over-rated!
Don't get me wrong, I think the film is good, but certainly not the modern-masterpiece all the hype would have you believe.
I found the 1st half of the film to be poorly edited, resulting in the plot making **** all sense for a good hour of the film!
I think the cuts imposed on this at the boxoffice are probably to blame though, so I'm really hoping the future HKL release will be the full Directors cut, coz as the film stands now i'd say it's good, but could have been great!

I'm certainly in the minority with that opinion though, but I also know you like a coherent plot Kin (unless Cecila Cheung turns up in the film of course!! ;))

Bichunmoo lacks plot eh, hmm well I think i have it on order at the moment.
Mind you I'm prepared having watch Zu: Warriors of the Magic Mountain which is as constrained by plot as its sequel Legends of Zu apparently. There seems to be a plot at the start but it rapidly disappears but you can't knock a film that features a warrior with lethal 30 foot long eyebrows :).
Then of course theres Tetsuo I which makes up in gross scenes what it lacks in plot errr sort of :)

The Foul King

Technical: HK R3 Anamorphic 2:35:1 DVD 9 DTS 5.1 and DD 5.1.

Picture and sound has no major problems, not reference quality but excellent all the same.

Film: This is one of those we all lead a mundane existence pictures so why don't we take up something unusual like pro wrestling and use it to right the wrongs of our everyday life kind of pictures ie billy elliot, ballroom dancing, full monty etc etc

Its a comedy that is well acted and scripted theres nothing here you have not seen before but its still funny and more exciting than its british counterparts ... if the idea appeals to you then you will enjoy it immensely if the idea doesn't you can't help but think its still a good movie.

Released by China Star Entertainment Group
Hong Kong R3 (All Region)
NTSC Colour

OAR 1.85:1 Anamorphic
DVD-5 Korean DD5.1 and Mandarin DD2.0
Chinese and English Subs (good)

Extras
- Cast and Crew Bios in English and Chinese
- Film Synopsis in English and Chinese

The sound is fine and the picture is as good as it can be for a single layer disc. Blacks are not completely black and there are compression artefacts. The DVD cover is printed wrong stating that the disc is anamorphic 2.35:1. At US$8 this DVD release is more than acceptable.

The film stars my favourite Hong Kong actress Cecilia Cheung (Fly Me To Polaris) and this film gives you ample evidence as to why. Cecilia doesn't say much in this Korean film with language being the obvious barrier but she acts her little socks off at every given moment. The lead actor Choi Min-sik (Shiri) is also incredibly good and its essential that both leads work very well for a film like this to work.

Directed by SONG Hae-sung (Chara), the film is about a hoodlum who is passed his sell by date and is refered to as all talk and no action by the young gang members. His life is pretty low and he has nothing to live for as he dreams of retiring on a boat somewhere by the sea. The first half of the film concentrates on building up the background of the lead actor.

Just when the lead actor is about to sacrifice his life for his gang boss he recieves a letter telling him that the wife he married from China 1 year ago for cash (to flout S.Korean immigration laws) has died leaving him a letter that has a profound affect on him. The film takes a turn and begins to tell the story of Cecilia Cheung ... she lives a simple naive life and is forever grateful to the lead actor who married her although they have never met.

It is from this point on that the film becomes an interesting study of chracters and this is when it really takes off.

A great film with a great latter half. Recommended ...

(Highly recommended if you like Cecilia Cheung)

In recent months, Hollywood studios have begun to take a major interest in the Korean film industry. One of the key areas in which this is taking place is in the purchase of remake rights, with top hits My Sassy Girl (DreamWorks), My Wife is a Gangster (Miramax) and Hi, Dharma (MGM) all having been sold to Hollywood studios. Many of the deals include a significant fee, plus a percentage of any future revenue earned by the remakes.

Yeah, you ought to stick with it,I wasn't impressed at all with the 1st 30mins, I thought it was editted very poorly & as a result too confusing, but the film does pick up considerably after that. I'm hoping that the DC improves the oopening 20mins & creates a far more coherent film.

AFRIKA (Adoring Four Revolutionary Idols In Korean Area) - Anamorphic 1.85:1 DD5.1 DVD-9

Road movie about 4 girls and self discovery. Its a black comedy and although the girls are fun to watch the movie provides few laughs, its not a bad movie but it doesn't offer anything that you have not seen before except that its film in Korea and stars 4 Hot Korean babes.

Barking dogs never bite contains funnier female bonding and intereaction scenes with 2 girls than Afrika does with 4 girls.

A love story about a boy and a girl with a twist ending that caught me by surprise. What makes it different from other boy girl romances? Its the unconventional and funny character of the female lead and the very likeable male lead. Its a tad long and a little trimming won't go amiss but it plays well and I agree with all the good word that has gone already about the film.

Watched Tell Me Something the other night and it was a total cracker - a borderline giallo with a lot of gore and a suitably twisty plot - the HK edition (R3) is good, non-anamorphic but a lovely picture and zoom-friendly subs.

I think Tell me Something is simply superb. Stomach-churning but clever as hell.

I've also absolutely loved Joint Security Area this year, the kind of political thriller Hollywood will no doubt water down in a few years time. The cast is notably good and the script is dense and intelligent. It repays reviewing.

Failan left me cold. I had very high hopes but it didn't reach me like I thought it might. I didn't buy the central 'relationship' and I think the last 5 minutes descends into way too much melodrama. Shame.

However, that's a rarity for me in that it's the only Korean movie I've not thoroughly enjoyed. Must try more. ANyone seen Say Yes ?

Finally got round to watchign Failan today, and whilst I didn't enjoy it quite as much as Tell me Something or My Sassy Girl, it was still a first rate drama which had me welling up by the end. I'm not ashamed to admit it...

I've seen Cecilia Cheung in a few HK movies and always thought she was a capable and charming actress, but her work in Failan is nothing short of revelatory. Choi Min Sik too is amazing as a washed out, ineffectual gangster. The pain in the mans eyes as he realises the sum achievements of his life amount to nothing... it's heartbreaking stuff.

For an admirer such as myself I have actually seen very few of her films mainly due bad reviews of each movie. Cecilia is thought of as a modern day Brigitte Lin Hsia Ha here in HK, which is no bad thing considering Brigitte Lin was as big as they get through acting ability.

My Wife is a Gangster - anamorphic 1.85:1 DD5.1
Picture and sound - fine

A novelty film which is a little slapdash in finish. The plot centres around the female lead who has made various promises to a dying sister, one of which is to get married.

The black comedy only works occasionally and the film plays out like other Korean gangster movies I have seen during the last 3 months or so. Its stylised in places particularly during the fight scenes but it serves no purpose and looks out of place in the film. Generally good comedy performances from the various male supports even if the joke ain't all that funny.

Likeable and very korean. See it if the idea appeals to you.

I'm thinking of picking up a few of the more highly recommended movies on this thread (thanks for a good starting list guys!). In general is it better to go for Korean R3 over HK R3 for these? Are there any specific movies mentioned on thsi thread where it's better to get HK over Korean release?

Cirrus888
14-07-2002, 19:34
Mr. Gimp its hard to say which ones are better releases but in general the picture quality is a lot better on Korean R3 but they are three times as expensive and harder to get. Some are only available on Korean R3 (newer titles) and too many HK R3 korean releases are pan and scam.

Both regions have english subs that are acceptable but not perfect. Some Korean R3's do not have english subs but I have not come across any yet.

I have mentioned in all my mini reviews what the exact details of each DVD I have seen is.

Failan HK R3 is a good cheap release.

I got the HK version - the Korean wasn't out at that point and the HK version is really quite nice for the price. Amaray in a card slipcase with a set of postcards and little booklet. I'm at the lower end of the set-up market so all I can really offer is that the picture is pretty sharp - better than many of the HK R3s I've bought. I'll just echo my enthusiasm for this cracking film. Those of you who associate Korean film with maudlin melodrama might be surprised.

Been looking at the Koreanfilm.org site again. This page -

http://www.koreanfilm.org/kfilm00.html

features the top films from 2000. I've seen a handful of them but not many Korean films made since then (last night I saw 'The Isle' in a Prague theatre - the first Korean film I've seen for 6 months, and it got one hell of an audience reaction!)

Anyway, from that page I've seen and would recommend..

'Peppermint Candy' (full-screen Korean DVD, but cheap and with good subs)

'The Foul King' (excellent Korean anamorphic release)

'Lie' (available from R1, full version is banned in Korea - I saw a pirate rip from VCD onto VHS)

'Chunghynag' (one of Jonathan Rosenbaum's films of the year, if that means anything- only out on R1, I think)

'The Isle' (not a particularly good film perhaps, but certainly worth seeing once - HK version cheapest, there might be a korean release now. Kim Ki-duk's next film 'Bad Guy' now available on Korean DVD, good reviews at European festivals)

I thought 'Bichunmoo' was woeful. Didn't see the film of JSA (have been wanting to for almost 2 years!) but I have seen the real JSA, if that counts. (Also heard that the film-set will be opened as a theme park - no idea what became of that plan)

If edko released their movies at HK$70 then fair enough but they don't, they release them at HK$140 barebones and non anamorphic. I would hold out and see what your getting exactly.

Musa - Anamorphic 2.35:1 DD5.1 Korean language with rough english subs.

Picture and sound are near reference quality - excellent

Film - Historical Epic about a band of korean soldiers who come across a Ming Princess and then spend the entire film dodging Mongol (YUAN) warriors.

Very stylish and visually exquiste to look at. The characters are 1-dimensional and think about nothing except honour but it worked for some strange reason. The plot is really too thin to hold any interest but the set pieces are exciting to watch if not interesting.

The style of the fight scenes are a little cut and paste like the 1st battle in gladiator.

Summary - all style and no plot but still fun to watch.

Recently watched another Chinese epic - Chen Kaige's The Emperor and the Assassin and that has everything MUSA doesn't. deep charcters, complex plot and a good ending.

Over the past few days I have seen My Wife Is A Gangster and My Sassy Girl

I absolutely loved both films and would recommend either of them easily. My Wife Is...... was a fun film and had some very stylish action scenes, there aren't too many but what is present is very good. Eun-Kyung Shin who plays the gangster wife is superb, she has a real toughness and sexiness about her which suits the role very well. Her comic timing is great and i certainly wouldn't mind her as my wife ;) :D

As well as Shin, Sang-Myeon Park plays his role of her husband Kang very well also. The poor guy has to suffer a lot of abuse but it's very funny watching him cope and trying to get it on with his wife who won't let him touch her!

As for My Sassy Girl this is definitely one of my favourite love stories simply because it is so unconventional from your typical teen romance/comedy. The two leads were excellent, Jeon - ji hyun was superb as the crazy girl and I think I'm in love with her already! :D

Tae-hyun Cha as the poor guy who wants to help the girl is also excellent and extremely likeable. He really puts up with some crap from the girl but for the whole running time you can't help but like both of them and wishing for them to get together.

It was also a great change to see a very funny teen film which didn't rely on toilet jokes either. You could even some of the situations occuring in real life - which only added to the humour

I'll never be able to hear the phrase 'Wanna Die ?' now without chuckling to myself :)

I disagree with Cirrus though when he says it needed trimmed, I for one wouldn't touch a single scene from the directors cut - the time just flew by for me and I thought all the scenes were perfect. Of course this will vary from person to person but since I'm such a sentimental sod and I didn't mind :)

Il Mare (the Sea) - HK R3 Non Anamorphic 1.85:1 DD5.1 & DTS Edko disc

Story about a time defying post box and how 2 people fall in love although 1 is from 2000 and the other 1998. Its a romantic movie with a twist that works. What stood out for me in this film was how beautiful and well put together every shot was which makes this the most polished korean film I have seen. The camera loves Jeon Ji-hyun and the environment she inhabits outdoor and indoor the same goes for the male lead.

The story moves along at a quiet and absorbing pace unlike their American counterparts which tends to do everything in an over the top manner.

I really like this movie as its intelligent without being too clever and balances everything out to make a tight enjoyable movie.

The perfect time travelling love story.

Hi Dharma

Released by Universe Laser & Video Co. Ltd.
Hong Kong R3 (Only)
NTSC Colour
96 Mins

OAR 1.85:1 Anamorphic
DVD-5
Korean DD5.1 and Cantonese DD5.1
English (Good), Chinese (Trad) and Chinese (Simp) Subs

Extras
- Star File Of Park Sang Myun
- 2 Theatrical Trailers (Korean and Cantonese)
- Trailer For Barking Dogs Never Bite

Ignoring the usual DVD-5 limitations e.g. black is not black the picture quality was very good with no compression artefacts present. The Korean DD5.1 soundtrack is excellent and the english subs on this HK DVD are better than Korean english subs in general although I have not seen the Korean version of this disc. Technical wise this is a great DVD-5 disc. No complaints.

Directed by first time director PARK Chul-kwan the film is about a bunch of gangsters (PARK Sang-myun) hiding out in a monastery and causing havoc to the daily rituals of the monks living there and so begins these comic situation film. The film is a very unassuming comedy in the vein of 4 weddings and a funeral. Not very funny but pleasant to watch all the same. The comedy was a big hit in Korea and runs smoother than My wife is a gangster which I found patchy.

Its a light comedy and if the idea appeals to you then you should enjoy it. I however would plump for the foul King or barking dogs never bite as funnier examples of Korean comedy.

My Boss, My Hero - Korean R3 Anamorphic 1.85:1 DD5.1

Great picture and sound no complaints.

Film - The modern day korean gangster is educated and intelligent. Our Hero feels he needs to get his high school diploma for the good of his gang. So begins the saga of our 20+ hero pretending to be a high school (secondary) student.

A polished film from start to finish. Its a genre jumping movie, hard hitting comedy, drama and gangland action. All 3 components work very well and are blended together to make a coherent and enjoyable movie. The no.3 in charge (one with Flashy Shirts) is hilariously dumb, No.2 in charge takes care of the love aspects in the movie and the hero plays the fish out of water character spot on.

Loads and loads of hot Korean girls in this movie (tripod is down so I can't post any) and it kept my perverted streak working overtime. :D

All in all very funny and recommended.

Trailer to 2009 Lost Memories. (http://www.lostmemories.co.kr/main.html)

Korean action thriller in the vein of Shiri and JSA.

It is the year AD 2009 when Seoul has become the third major city of Japan. He has forgotten his heritage as a Chosun(Korean), sharing a close friendship with his partner, SAIGO and pledging his allegiance to the Japanese Empire.
Meanwhile, a minority of Chosuns create an underground resistance organization called 'Hureisenjin' (Chosun Liberation Confederation) to fight against Japan.
The empirical authorities suspect a huge conspiracy behind the activities of the confederation and assign SAKAMOTO and SAIGO to the case. Utterly confused by the series of events he encounters, SAKAMOTO is confronted with the incredible historical truth he was never aware of before...

I personally can't get enough of korean movies and I'm glad more and more are being released cheaply in HK. Even if the films are poor they are still worth looking at.

My HK film output has dropped to zero to accommodate my new found enthusiasm for Korean Movies.

I have looked at the specs of the Korean version (the one with the red cover and you know who :norty: on the front yeah?) and it doesn't seem to have much over the HK version.

No, there is no real difference in image, I'm sure. However, if you really want to get a good english translation of this movie, I've heard, the HK version uses a lot of colloquialisms that are of HK origin while the Korean stays with english as it should be. Apparently the HK translation makes certain lines seem "nasty" or "rude" or something. And the HK has some dialogue lines chopped off at the ends. Apparently the DVD picture is better then the Korean and it has a DTS track ( see http://www.a-lovestory.de/ and experience ).

A quote from www.dvdtimes.co.uk: "Unfortunately, the subtitles were a little troublesome. They appear just within the 1.85:1 frame, but they are occasionally cut off at the bottom. The main problem is that on a number of occasions the subtitles cut off before the end of the sentence - we frequently end up only seeing half words, or worse, half sentences and this does make it a little difficult to understand exactly what's being said. It doesn't stop you knowing what's going on - it's just a little irritating."

Another quote from http://www.mhvf.net/forum/asian/posts/108218045.html

"Letterboxed at roughly 1.85:1 (a couple of shots at the start and end inexplicably open up to full screen), Spectrum’s dvd offers a good, crisp 16:9 transfer, with only a few problem areas: some shots look completely smeared, and occasional heavy ghosting abounds. The removable white English subtitles don’t fare too well, but it’s not just the grammatical/spelling errors though. The decision to place 3 lines of subtitles on the picture becomes quite distracting (the font is too bold and there’s too much leading), especially when the film lives on composition and visuals. They should have brought it further down to the bottom matte of the picture. Extras include a trailer, music video and talent files, which I haven’t checked out yet. Nowhere on the dvd cover does the title IL MARE appear, except for a sub-heading "A Love Story"."
I guess the HK DVD is the one to own for picture quality although that isn't the best either. Let's hope the film will get a proper treatment some time soon.

Please reply here when you have seen the Korean DVD. I would like to know if it really is that bad as some reviewers have said.

EricF - I'm sure i read somewhere that the transfer was anamorphic for the Korean R3 of Il mare ??? - well I'm still waiting for my order ...

The HK R3 version I saw of Il Mare had large chunks of missing subtitles, where they went I do not know!

Krdvd (http://www.krdvd.com/details.php?id=13) lists it as anamorphic!

I know this should be in suppliers but the right people seem to be here :)

So where's the best place to buy korean dvd's?

yesasia.com - good service but not the cheapest
krdvd.com - seem cheap but only take paypal
yeondvd.com - no stock status
dvdasian.com

anyone used the last 2? are they customs safe?

There is also Korean DVDs (http://www.koreandvds.com/) but I think they are expensive.

I have only just used yesasia.com so I am of no use to you but Mr. Vampire has use YeonDVD and yesasia and he seems to recommend them.

I would have gone with krdvd.com if yesasia.com didn't have cheap posting to HK.

I use DVDAsian when DDDHouse is not an option.

Again, not cheap, but quality service and fast delivery. I ordered the Tarantino Version of Chungking Express last night and got a shipping notice early this morning.

Theres a thread in suppliers about koreandvds and they don;t sound to good.

I've used yesasia loads (mainly for cd's), think they're brill but their korean dvd's are quite expensive, I might give yeon/dvdasian a go, depending on who's cheapest :D

There was a problem with the Spectrum releases ( Korean company ) of this and a couple of other DVDs. If you had a 4:3 TV you had to tell the player that you had a 16X9 TV for it to show the right aspect ratio. It's not anamorphic. Just letterbox. I know what you might have read:
http://www.mhvf.net/forum/asian/posts/108218045.html
He first says:"Letterboxed at roughly 1.85:1 " and then all of a sudden says:"Spectrum’s dvd offers a good, crisp 16:9 transfer". He means 1:85:1. He also speaks of the bad subtitles placement and some smearing and ghosting in the picture
but here are the real specs:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1545019646

Please write here to tell us of what you think about the Korean DVD.
Thanks

couldn't be bothered to read some of the last posts (apart from that part about me :D).

I've used Yesasia.com and krdvd.com for Korean dvds (not Yeondvd), all are good companies (well all the mentioned). Apart from koreandvd.com, which I haven't used and seems to have very little on the comments by other users.

The Korean release of Il Mare (Love Story) is only a letterboxed transfer, and not that good imo. Although the film is.

Add to the comments. My recent titles have been Fun Movie and Whasango (Volcano High), and enjoyed both. If that's not the vaguest comment, I don't know what is :p :D

Korean action thriller in the vein of Shiri and JSA.

It is the year AD 2009 when Seoul has become the third major city of Japan. SAKAMOTO Ryu takes after his father and becomes a cop. This eventually takes SAKAMOTO to the fateful meeting with OH Hae-rin, the Chosun woman he may have seen in his dreams.
Utterly confused by the series of events he encounters, SAKAMOTO is confronted with the incredible historical truth he was never aware of before...

She also said there's 2 versions of spirited away, a cantonese and japanese version. But then she also wanted to know what DTS was slapped onto Il Mare

Anyone heard about Endless Love (http://clubvcd.com/perl/view/item/f002) (Korean TV series). Hopefully, she'll get me the whole series as well, apparently it makes http://www.plauder-smilies.de/devil/azdevil.gif into http://members.lycos.co.uk/kcxdev/smilies/bawling.gif

kcxdev - You have to make sure those Korean or japanese TV series contain english subs which I don't think they do. I think those box sets are only available VCD as well.

Cirrus888
11-08-2002, 14:00
The Quiet Family (1998) - HK R3, 1.66:1, Korean DD2.0 only, Eng and Chin subs, DVD-5. Distributed by Modern.

Technical specs are nothing to write home about, adequete sound and picture. Compression problems abound and the source print spicks and specks throughout. Subs frequently miss out words although the film isn't hard to follow. Modern is a newish small distributor and this DVD is poor compared to releases made by universe and mei ah. There are only 2 versions available this HK R3 or the Korean R3.

Film - Its a black comedy that was remade into a Miike Takashi movie Happiness of the katakuris (kanadaa ;)). I haven't seen the Japanese version but I don't think it could be any funnier than the original which is well made and well acted. Its a Story about a family who buys a lodge out in the woods and all the guests who turn up die leaving them to clean up the mess.

Its a one joke movie but everything moves along at a quick pace and the characters all have their little stories to act out. The actors are not really given much to do but each one is clearly defined and the film never bores.

I recommend this Korean black comedy.

not too bothered about VCD or DVD (coolashop list a dvd set though, and vcd with korean/cantonese), dunno about the subs, but sis said they have a cantonese dub which is fine (something about being the same version as on the hk cable channel?). She was gonna find it cheaper in China but I thought they would have a mandarin dub.

um.. well, actually for the 'part I' -Endless Love, it's not much relation with the 'part II' Winter sonata ( or soneta). The story are different bit but just as touch as the part I ( hopefully). ( i don't really understand why they said it's part II)

My friend finished it just becoz of Wom Bin. And maybe you can keep it on just becoz of that cute Song Har Kyo.

Just wondering that the price stated there included delivery fees?

We can get it everywhere with RM 70 to 90 here. ( £ 1 = Rm6)

In Singapore it's about Singapore Dollar 60. Would be cheaper later. Coz i can get Endless Love at around Sing. Dollar 30.

For anyone here with the HK dvd of My Sassy Girl are the extra scenes subtitled in english ?

I should be receiving my HK dvd soon but I thought that it was the directors cut and not the theatrical cut. And until I can get the korean dvd I'll have to make do with the scenes in the separate section. (I've already seen the directors cut due to a friend lending me it and I definitely wouldn't want a shorter version).

Anyway I love the movie so I'll be having both dvds anyway (so as I can have both versions) :D

Received my Kr Il Mare today and on initial screen grabs the HKR3 does seem to be sharper. The web server isn't working (as usual) otherwise I would have posted the pics for you all to see. There is very little difference in picture quality however.

Both are Non-anamorphic - bugger!

I haven't watched it yet so I can not comment if the subtitles are obtrusive for the Korean Version but it does not seem any different from other titles I have watched.
