View Full Version : Westworld R1 vs R1 ??
The Karate Kid

I'm looking to buy that classic 70s SCi-fi flick Westworld, but Looking at places like amazon, it looks like there are two versions of the film released by different companies. One is MGM, which was the first and now seems hard to come by, and the currently available one is released by ???? I do not know.
WHat I'm really interested are the specs for both. I know that the MGM version was non anamorphic, and had the trailer, but what about the new release? I'd also be interested in what the print quality is like on both versions as well. This title is not listed on dvdcompare.
So does anyone know anything about these DVD releases?

They're both exactly the same.
Warner's review here (http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/westworld.shtml)
and MGM here (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/reviews/westworld.html)
I can only guess the reason why there's two versions must be due to a change in distribution rights.

Thanks Cornelius, They both have identical specs, although the MGM seems better as it's presented in it's full widescreen ratio. Both Anamorphic though.
I hope I can still get the MGM version, as it comes in an Amaray case, whilst warners is a snapper.

Try DVDBoxoffice. It'll be a bit of a lottery now but they might still have the MGM one. You could always email them first to make sure.

The MGM rights passed to Warner Bros. All the old titles were Turner (CNN) which was bought by Warner. Also applies to films like Logan's Run which have all been reissued with no changes.
Therefore if you buy now you will probably get the Warner Bros in a snapper case.
Its anamorphic w/s on one side 2.35 ? (have not watched for some time) definitely correct OAR as matches the w/s VHS I have. and 4.3 on the other side
No exciting extras
There is a rumour that the Arnie is thinking of remaking the film. If so may get a Special Edition of the original. However as you can get for around £10 why wait.

I heard that about Arnie, But I heard that he had actually signed to play the part with Joel Silver producing. Could be interesting.
I'm now thinking the Warners Version might be better, as it looks like it's had a dolby digital sound re-mix, and I only ever remember this film being in mono.

Is Arnie gonna play the bad guy ?

yeah, he's playing 'The Gunslinger' the main bad guy and android that goes mental and shoots the human guests of westworld.
Actually, all the Androids at the resort go beserk and start killing the guests, but Arnie 'Gunslinger' is the latest upgrade, and doesn't wear down like the others. Practically indestructable.
It'll be the first proper bad guy he's played since the original terminator. I'm a big fan of Westworld, so I'm looking forward to the remake, the film really does have the potential to go further than the original.

The Villain, or as it's known here, Cactus Jack.

The Arnie remake sounds really bad. Remaking Westworld is as bad as remaking Planet of the Apes (and we all know how that was ruined).
At least I managed to get Logans Run in a nice MGM Amaray and not a Warner snapper :D.
Talking of snappers. Warner is actually aware of the hate towards snappers but they're not changing them any time soon (brief mention about it here (http://www.dvddebate.com/article.php?sid=2764&mode=thread&order=0). My guess is it's a contractual thing, or maybe just it's cheap for them, though I'd rather pay a £1 or two more for a better case but anyway. If they need to sell cheap to sell their titles at all compared to everyone else, something can't be right). Thankfully all this doesn't appear to apply to R4 :D.
At least Warner have realised that to do two disc editions they can't just do double-sided discs in a snapper (some of which ended up being poor quality through low-bitrates or lacking on extras because they used single-layers per side - though not with Superman. I guess it's expensive to do dual-layer, double-sided though). Now they're doing them in digipacks. Better, but still easy-to-damage cardboard. Thankfully they've been using the glossy kind of cardboard like Fox do which is less easy to damage and doesn't pick up fingerprints.

I'm not too worried about that. I've become a dab hand at scanning snappers at high res, and then printing them out on photopaper, then I usually submit them here (http://www.dvdcoverart.com) , besides, The warners artwork is the original poster.:D
I think a remake of westworld might be good, whereas Planet Of The Apes was already a flawless classic, westworld is not flawless. But a classic, in my eyes.

I don't have a good enough printer to print decent replacement covers.
Is it possible to remove the snapper plastic from the cardboard and get it into an Amaray? Never tried, but the cardboard doesn't look too thick to be a problem, but is there a way of getting the plastic off the cover without major damage?

Yes there is a way to remove the cardboard from the plastic. On the back of the cover, at the top and bottom there are plastic flaps, pull them up and the cardboard just comes off, this doesn't damage the cover or plastic in anyway and you can place the cardboard back after you have scanned it.
What kind of printer do you have? A good mid-range colour printer can get ver good results, just be sure to set it to the highest resolution and use photopaper. Practically identical to the original.

It's an old HP Deskjet 690. To use photopaper I need a photo cartridge (replaces the black and works with the tri-colour), but I can't find the cartridges these days, plus for the price of a few of them I could buy a new printer anyway. That's probably the solution but I can't be bothered just so I can print out some DVD covers.

Try here (http://www.aah-haa.com/inkylink.shtml) . Good online UK based ordering, cheapest place I've found on the net for Ink Cartridges.

I'm pretty sure Warners have a financial interest in the company that makes snappers - Kind of a "They liked it so much, they bought the company" thing.
