Please, please, PLEASE tell me there some kinda DVD release of this film on any region at all? I watched it on Sky Cinema a couple of weeks back at two in the morning and was completely fascinated, I'm becoming worryingly fond of these 'redemption through violence' films  Are there any other of Abel Ferrara's films that are like this and King of New York?
Cheers!

Don't think there is.
Remember trawling around for months for this one back in the ole days of VHS - where of course it was renamed "Angel Of Vengeance" d'oh !
Not seen it...
There is a DVD release in Region 1, but it's cut by almost as much as the current British video release is.
When it was first released, Warner put out an uncut version instead. Within a week they realised the mistake and put out the cut version.
The uncut version is available on VHS in Greece and Australia.

I've got that DVD - it really is a good little film.
The R1 DVD is visually uncut, but some music has had to have been removed - same on all other versions on video and DVD.
The anamorphic picture is not bad at all.
Channel 4 have the version with the original music on.

Film 4 shows a lot of Ferrera stuff, though I thought they still changed the music in Bad Leuitenant (though it seemed good anyway). Can't remember if it's spoilt by another M.Kermode "my career is based on cashing in on hype with so called 'extreme' films that aren't" intro.
And of course a lot of Film 4 stuff is anamorphic (just a shame VHS is so pants. Still, maybe if I get Sky+... :D).

I have the Region 1 Ms.45, and it is indeed cut, but despite the barebones, snap cased release from Image, the non-anamorphic transfer is extremely good.
What has been cut:
Both rape scenes have bits missing, especially the second, and the onscreen murder at the end of the film at the party shoot-out, is now offscreen.

Speaking as someone who has both versions of the film - the US DVD (which actually isn't region-coded) and the "accidental" uncut VHS version - I'm happy to confirm that the cuts make no significant difference to the film at all. Indeed, if anything, the rapes are more disturbing through being truncated!
In fact, I didn't even notice that the DVD had been cut when I watched it, despite having seen the uncut version three times beforehand!

That's FANTASTIC news cap'n eyecatch.. The R1 has been on my wants list for a long time - it's very expensive. Didn't even know it was cut 'till I read this thread.. so bring on the french release!
Aye Captain!
Cracking little flick. I used to have the big old puffy case WB VHS original (sadly cut also).
Gotta get this disc :D

The uncut German disc that's currently knocking about is a bootleg, isn't it?

I think theres 2 german releases both semi-bootlegs and poor quality etc.
This french release (fingers crossed) should blow them out the water. Must remember to order this and also pick up the unrated Innocent blood dvd.

Looking forward to this having never seen it. Good spot, Mr. Catch!
Wanted to see this film for ages. Love the German title: "Der Frau Mit Der 45er Magnum".
A couple of other Ferrara films worth seeing are The Funeral and The Addiction. One's a very intense gangster drama, and the other is a very intense intellectualised/pretentious vampire drama with heavy philosophical overtones. They were/(are?) available as a double pack from Pathe, which was sadly fullscreen.

Any idea if this release is likely to have forced / burned in subtitles?

yes, but if you look at "Tiffany Bradford"'s post - her (presumably) username is not a hyperlink, which would indicate that the account no longer exists, whereas the great opinionated one's is still a live hyperlink

That's a bit frustrating Moldiver, I ordered mine from Amazon France (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=22) too. Perhaps it's because I used the cheapskate shipping :D, did you use the more expensive shipping option?
Moldiver
11-03-2008, 13:21
No I used standard as well. When did you place your order? I placed mine pretty much as soon as I saw the announcement here. Wouldn't have expected it to sell out quite so fast.

Didn't place my order until about 10 days ago, so guess I'm just bottom of the queue. Can't think of any other French etailers I've used before.

Alright chaps. My copy arrived this morning. Had a quick check, will watch in full tonight. Appears uncut to my eyes though - run time is 1.17:39. Transfer is very nice; some edge enhancement and minor aliasing, but overall nice colour balance and detail - progressive as well. Sound options are French and English mono and English 5.1. French subtitles are optional, so it's good news all round :) Here are some screen grabs:
