Worth a watch if you are familiar with the James Whale Frankenstein pics it parodies. It does look great and some of it is amusing but (unlike some of my mates) I couldn't really say it's "the funniest film ever" or anything like that. It's "okay" IMHO.

It is brilliant!

The scenes with Gene Hackman as the blind beggar are as funny as anything ever put on film.

Just seen Peter Boyle in "Monster's Ball" so it'll be weird to see him as the touchingly sympathetic monster in Brooks' film.

Hilarious film. Quite why it's on at 01.45am is anyone's guess.

It's about a billion times better than 'Spaceballs' that's for sure.

I love both Young Frankenstein and Spaceballs, never really understood the bad rap that Spaceballs has. Mind you neither of them are as good as Blazing Saddles in my opinion. :)

When I watched spaceballs recently after having seen it when it came out I found the jokes to be purile and weak. I guess I found it funny because of my age when I saw it the first time.

Men in tights is just crap.

It is a terrifically funny film, only bettered slightly by Brooks' Blazing Saddles, but I guess that's down to personal taste more than anything. The R2 dvd is also worth buying as it has some interesting extras, and it's going for less than a tenner at 'Play'.

I think it's Mel Brooks best film by far and one of the funniest comedies ever. It even works well as a sequel to the original Universal Frankenstein films. A masterpiece !

I see George Lucas stole a scene from Young Frankenstein for AOTC. The scene were Gene Wilder is writhing around in bed having a nightmare ("Destiny! Destiny!") is identical to the Anakin nightmare scene.

Although I'm sure George didn't intend his scene to be funny.

The R2 DVD is fabulous, and worth every penny even at full price - for once, virtually all the (extensive) extras are actually worth having.

Am I right in thinking it's better than the R1?

I think the extras are the same but IIRC the R1 is non-anamorphic.

I really must watch this again as it is a fantastic film

yeah the R1 is non-anamorphic.
Is this film a grower?
I just didn't find it all that funny. Then again I really hated "Death Becomes Her" a decade ago but now find it side-splitting...
maybe I should give it another go?

This film is a true classic comedy, Mel Brooks really did excell himself with this movie. The are so many great lines in this one it's hard to know where to start.
But

Frankenstein "I can do something about your hump"

Igor "What hump?"

Tape it, better still buy the disc, It's a blast

" It's pronounced Fronken - steen. "

" It's pronounced Eye - gor ."

" Igor, get the bags. "
" Ok .... you take the blonde, I'll take the brunette !!! "

(or thereabouts ;) )

Another superb Mel Brooks film is High Anxiety.
