Okay as an accompaniment to the Slipknot thread I thought i'd start this one to try and gauge the feeling about him and his music.
Along with Slipknot he is another person that people like to slate, although I think it is unfair in Mazzas case. Okay he attracts some controversy, but in Mazzas case it is done in a very clever way, not through silly masks and 'shock' lyrics, okay maybe the second example isn't very good, but you know what I mean.
I have been a fan since Antichrist Superstar and think his music has come on in leaps and bounds. Smells Like Children was okay, Antichrist Superstar has its moments but seems like an extension of Nine Inch Nails (probably due in part to Trent Reznors involvement), Mechanical Animals was a big change from the last album, swopping the industrial sound for (shock, horror) melody. Holy Wood is probably the best work to date.
So come on what do you all think. Or to put it another way:
what does every body thinkn of marilyn manson? sum people hate them and some love them..... discus.....:)

Don't mind the fella too much. He's completly stolen Alice Coopers stage show but he winds up middle America something rotten and unlike the Slipknots of the world he can actually argue his point. For that alone he's worth bothering with.
His Tainted Love cover was crap though.

I was pretty much apathetic to his first few albums and I’ve never actually listened to Holy Wood so I can't comment although I did like Fight Song. Any song with lyrics-I'm not a slave to a god that doesn't exist
I'm not a slave to a world that doesn't give a **** gets a thumbs up from me. :D
So I don't love him or hate him, I just don't care. http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/huh.gif

'shock' lyrics go with the image, don't see parents complaining about the manics.

Has anybody read his auto-biography - the Long Hard Road Out of Hell?
It makes very interesting reading. Even if you don't like the man reading this will give you an insight into why he does the things he does, and may make you appreciate him a little more (even if you still don't like him!!!)

Very good read - recommended.
His early stuff is a bit crap IMO,but everything from Antichrist onwards is fantastic.
As Arch Stanton mentioned,he can argue his point and seems to be able to manipulate the media just as he likes.
A highly intelligent individual with genuine talent - Just the kind of role model we need ;)

Not really a fan of his early work, AntiChrist Superstar has some fantastic tracks, but a fair amount of dross. I love Mechanical Animals, and save for a few tracks of Holywood, I thought it was poo.
His Tainted Love cover also smelled of wee.

Good to see i'm not the only one. :p
As for MM, he's seems like a decent fella. I remember seeing one of his MTV diaries, seems very intelligent and knows how to play the game. It maybe and act it maybe a lifestyle but respect to what he does as it obviously makes him a lot of money and a lot of fans happy (or should that be deranged sociopaths?? :D).
Not got any albums but have a few singles, wouldn't mind getting Holy Wood. I must say i've only really heard his more commercial output, favourite prolly being The Nobodies whilst The Dope Show, Fight Song and Beuatiful People are all very good.

i think as much of marilyn manson as i do of slipknot so if you have read my slipknot thread you'll no that i love them! so i love marilyn manson aswell!
yep, big Mazza fan here. Got all the LP's and they all rock, although I think Antichrist Superstar is an absolute genuine classic, but Holy Wood is not far behind. Tbh, I think Mechanical Animals hasn't aged that well and looks a bit crap in hindsight. Don't forget Portrait of an American Family either - bit hit and miss, but some great early stuff on there, like Lunchbox and Cake And Sodomy.
Yes, the book was a very interesting read, including his childhood and his uncle's pron collection!!
I note Twiggy's gone his separate way and so the next material could be interesting to hear.........

Mr Manson is complete & utter drivel.
Strange how his fanbase worships him after he became a sellout and not before.
I'll stick with NIN thanks very much.
Infact I'd chose Eminem over Manson, at least you can laugh with Eminem at himself.

put me down as a mansun mark, they're holy wood album was the mutts nutts, their covers may not be the best on the radio but in the clubs they are top notch.

Thought Sweet Dreams was a much better choice to Tainted Love, but like them both still.
Has anyone heard MMs version of Highway to Hell? Much as I'm a fan,IMO it's awful

Antichrist is great. Not so keep on the other stuff: I like it, but its not that great, and quickly gets dull IMO.
I think he is a bit "violant" though ;) ;) only joking, just had to mention that
I thought he was great in the Wonder Years.

I enjoyed everything up to mechanical animals, the music was great and he was totally original - then he started to sell out by releasing disposable teens, fight song, nobodies etc & instead of having a very gothic fanbase, people walk round in adidas trainers with a fake marilyn manson hoody, and a linkin park shirt or something!! really annoyes me seeing skaters with manson merch - and tainted love just takes the **** really - he is a total sell-out, and i think twiggy leaving is for the best
just my opinion, and i have nothing against skaters, just to make sure i dont offend anyone - and i LOVE everything before holy wood
It's this 'I was there before they were popular, now they suck' attitude towards music that really annoys me! I'd hardly describe Disposable Teens as selling out. And Tainted Love, hello McFly, if that's him selling out then he did it years ago when he released his version of Sweet Dreams.
Personally i'd be quite happy to be rid of my 'gothic-fanbase' :D

I dont see why.
Hardcore fans are bound to have their noses put out.
It sounds like somebodies on the defensive because they hopped on the band wagon a tad later than there'd like to admit ?. :norty:
OK, its one thing to have success through hard work and talent, and its another to bend your sound and image to appeal to the widest possible audience (be it within the confinement of your own style).
When you look at what Manson stuff used to be like (cutting himself up with razors in music videos, etc), and compare that to a bunch of tasty teens messing about in bikini's in a pool as part of a soundtrack to a Hollywood movie targeted at middle America teens, its fairly easy to see why this attutide that annoys you so much is shared amungst many original Manson fans.
You might prefer the more accessable Manson, but the fans who were buying the records before anyone knew who they were are obviously against anything even remotely mainstream.
Manson's huge ego (and it is huge!) got the better of him in the end and his cult following was no longer enough for him. He thought he should be a household name & has been happy to be an MTV darling ever since.
Even Trent Reznor washed his hand of him & it was Trent who pretty much made Manson to begin with.
Trent often compares his time with Manson to Frankenstein, "I created a monster, and then I couldnt control it", says Trent when talking about Mansons ego & obssesion for fame.

Erm, no not at all. I'll happily admit (as I did) I never got into him before Antichrist Superstar. It's a shame you have to make comments like this Jimmyboy as you have raised some interesting points in your post which I now can't be bothered with. :oh-hum:

I'm not into MM's music, but...who is this guy? Someone said he he was in a TV show called The Wonder Years.
I think his music is fine, if im in the mood for his gothic attitude on things. Clearly the guy is smart and is able to manipulate the industry and the public to his own thinking and for that he has my respect. :)

Nothing to do with MM now being bigger than NIN ever were or will be (in terms of commercial success rather than critical acclaim at least)?

I like their albums. I also think in interviews etc he comes across well and seems intelligent and has some interesting and good points to make. I think though he has always been aware of the success he could achieve through media attention. I am sure in his book when he talks about being a music journo that part of the reason for wanting to form a band was to create a "true" stereotypical, larger than life, rockstar. He talks about being dissapointed when he met rockstars that he admired because they had nothing interesting to say.
I think the music they create is good and is what they want to do but Manson just knows how to get more media attention and recognises its importance in his success compared to some other bands.
I just got "The golden age..." and although it is good, it is very similar to holywood. I think their next album has to sound pretty different and I have a feeling it won't.

A  from me.
Antichrist and Holywood were good albums, Mechanical Animals was the "dogs" though.
Haven't got round to getting the new one yet, though from what I've heard its sound promising
i.e more of the same:)
Def. gonna get my ass off the couch to see him when he tours.
(the "live" dvd was pants though-every song was a montage from different shows:( )

I really like all Mazza's stuff. He's a very intelligent bloke. I saw him on MTV2 in Japan and he phoned his mum every night to say he was ok. I think a lot of the stuff he does is mainly for show, but I know he was deeply upset about the columbine aftermath and how people blamed him for the shootings.....Excellent live show as well

Marilyn Manson rocks! I love his music and he's a great artist. Better than Slipknot anyday man! I'm going to get his new album before I go on my Europe trip in late June.
the guy is a genious and is new album is siply superb. Most people that tend to slag him dont have a clue about his work and hate him simply because of what the tabloids print

Musically I can take him or leave him, but the times I've seen him interviewed he's always come across as very intelligent indeed (Bowling for Columbine and a TV documentary on Columbine in particular) - music wise, though, no.
Being a bit of an "old school" rocker, I reckon Manson is pretty much a 21st century heavier version of Alice Cooper.
And I like it!

I heard he threatened to sue anyone that publically linked him or his music to the shootings. Then all the news reports suddenly went quiet on the subject. Smart man.
Just bought the new album, will give it a spin tonight.

Definitely not his best album but well worth a listen.
Gets off to a powerful start but loses steam about half way through.
