View Full Version : Beijing Bicycle [Korean R3]
I bought the Korean R3 version rather than the Columbia Tristar R1 release and am glad to report that I am very pleased with it.
The disc is anamorphic with a clean clear picture and in DD2.0 Mandarin only, which is the same as the R1. The English subtitles are very well done with no grammatical or spelling errors. I would be surprised if it were any different to the R1 release.
What this Korean DVD does include are the Original Sound Track CD, Theatrical Trailer, Other Trailer, Cast & Staff, Highlights, Production Note, Character Profiles, Photo Gallery, Music Video, Leading Actor's Photo Gallery.
The film?
Well, I enjoyed it very much. The leads are very good and the story is always well paced. It's touching and unquestionably a melancholic tale about one teenager's struggle in the city and one teenager's struggle with his family and in the end, love. Some of the camera work is very well done and highlights how far Chinese filmmaking has come.

I got the Korean R3 (actually R0) from www.dvdasian.com . It is also out on R1 from any good dealer but I believe that the Korean version is better and includes a CD of the very hummable soundtrack. :)

Dunno how.
But the trailer is here:

You should be able to pick out both birds from it. :norty: :smokin:
Oh and listen to the music. It is superb!! Makes getting the Korean version with the CD soundtrack worthwhile methinks.
Right, the 2 birds are:
Zhou Xun
and
Gao Yuanyuan (my fave)
Both are apparently quite well established Chinese actresses from the Mainland. :)
Out on R1 now but I recommend the R3.

Great film (and another chance to plug one of my DVDTimes reviews here (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=1012&story=3525) of the Canadian R1). Watched it again recently and was still very impressed.

There's a comparison on DVDBeaver (http://207.136.67.23/film/dvdcompare/beijingbicycle.htm) of the differences between the Canadian and the US versions. The Canadian is slightly better. Haven't seen any reviews of the Korean release.
Darn - no screengrabs from me for now. DVD is out on loan. :(

The Korean version easily.
I note that Tartan released the R0 Beijing Bicycle in the UK last week.
See HERE (http://www.playserver4.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R2&title=109460).
The cover picture on it is atrocious.
The Korean R3 (http://www.dvdasian.com/cgi-bin/dvdasian/flypage.big.html?mv_arg=12699) is still best.
Screengrabs of the 2 girls added (just to highlight the stunning picture quality of the DVD of course :norty:  ) :suspect:

UK Region 2 version is only 8.99 at play.com!

Yep. But the Korean film with the OST is just sooo much nicer. :D
I watched the Tartan R2 and found that the picture looks a bit grainy at times, though not particularly noticeable. It's probably due to the fact that this is the single layer disc (DVD 5) as opposed to other versions which come in the dual layer format (DVD 9).
The only relevant extra is the original trailer, with trailers of In the Mood for Love, The Terrorist, Jules et Jim and the Ingmar Bergman Collection added.
Throughout the film I really enjoy the story and the portrayal of Beijing in an extraordinary way. Beijing is becoming westernised yet there're areas where people still live with old traditions.
My review in Thai with some pictures from the film is here (http://www.dvddiary.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?mode=viewtopic&topic=4291&forum=2&start=0&increply=).
Nice review Chinnie.
(even though I can't read a word of it) :D
So you at Oxford U hey?
thanks a lot krub .. chinnie :norty:
Ono, my credit card company would respectfully request that you stop making recommendations for great Far Eastern movies because I keep buying them! :D

TBH, she's only in it very briefly but it's a cracking epic with plenty of Li Gong in the 2h 40m runtime and it's only 7.99 <a href="http://www.playserver1.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R2&title=97712">here</a> at Play.
Zhou Xun is also the lead in The Little Chinese Seamstress (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=1376&story=4462) which I've just reviewed for DVDTimes.

I watched Beijing Bicycle very late (well, in the early hours of around 2am) last night, and it must have been good as I didn't once doze off. It held my attention throughout. The story is not particularly original, but the direction and cinematography are top notch. I don't mean to be cruel, but Cui Lin's portrayal of the kid from the sticks kept me amused throughout. His "fish out of water" performance is simultaneously humorous and heartfelt.

Only just watched it ... A simple story well told, well filmed, well perfomed and well recommended.
:D
I've also seen the classic bicycle thief and the two films are very similar in theme and outlook. However Beijing bicycle more than stands up on its own and the Korean DVD is a real keeper ...
Finally managed to watch this. Thought it dragged in places but Xhou Xun is :norty:
