August is shaping up as a pretty good month for the Forum's petrolheads with The Italian Job. However, I noticed Vanishing Point up for pre-order in both R2 and R4 (at Devoted) too.
I was just wondering whether at a 9.99 quid price point, there would be any special features (and what the specs are)?
Second, is this a good blind purchase film-wise?
It's either the most tedious film ever made, or a work of petrol sniffing genius second only to Two Lane Blacktop. Depends on how much you like watching cars.
w00t
thanx for that - pre-ordering ASAP :D
Kowalski - the last American hero - A demogogue!
The Primal Scream album is better as a work of art but the film has a very quirky feel to it. I may be tempted if it is a good disc pic wise.
Vanishing Point is a great movie, very much of its time but in a good way. Barry Newman is always worth a watch.
**Edit
Great news, going to get this to upgrade from my VHS (Gasp!, Horror!)
Ok, just checked play.com, they have the R2 for £7.99, no details on OAR or extras, me thinks it will be barebones release.

Just make sure it the original and not the dire TV movie remake.
It's the original, they have Barry Newman and Cleavon Little (the DJ) listed as actors.
gimme a half decent transfer and i'm happy really, much better than a few crappy extras...
Fantastic ....
All I want now is le mans, and grand prix.

To answer my own question, it's a bare-bones release (only a trailer) with 2.0 mono English (but 2.0 surround for French, German and Spanish - weird).
Most importantly, it's 1.85:1 with 16x9 enhancement.

wasn't this originally cinemascope?

Crap film (as far as I remember it) inspires great Primal Scream album.
Its out on the 5th of August in the uk http://www.fox.co.uk/home_ent/synopsis/vanishing_point.html
Its only £7.99 from play. (http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R2&title=104128)
Anybody bought this yet?
If so what's the picture quality like?
Haven't watched it all the way through but it looked surprisingly good with very little print damage. If you like the film a definite bargain.

Talking of movies with Dodge Challengers in, surely Dirty Mary Crazy Larry is long overdue a release on DVD?
Just bringing this back from the dead!
Noticed the R1 is out now. Here are some reviews (http://www.dvd-basen.dk/uk/home.php3?search=Vanishing+Point+&land=%25&ok=go&mvis=ok®ion=%25)
Sounds like a worthy version for fans with both cuts and a commentary present. It is a mesmerizing film.
:)
It's obvious from the commentary that Sarafian had no love for Barry Newman, who was forced on him by Richard Zanuck at Fox. Sarafian wanted Gene Hackman to play Kowalski!

Ooh, excellent - thanks, I've ordered.
Great news, I held off buying the R2 to see if R1 would have a better DVD.
Looks a purchase.

Big music rights problem with that film, apparently. It did get a UK video release in 1987 according to the BBFC website, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did have to substitute some of the soundtrack.
