As the previous thread (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=98882) went very very mad with arguments about what constituted an album released in 2002. After discussion with Mullethead I'm starting it again with a clear set of rules from the outset:

1) Must be released this year in the UK (not re-released or imported or downloaded from the web);
2) Must not be a compilation, best of or live album;
3) People must vote for 10 (or less) albums in order of how much they like them (with 10 points given for #1, 9 for number #2. Trust me, from experience this makes the scores spread out and you don't have the problem of having 16 albums in joint 5th place);
4) Must not be a single;

If people have voted in the other thread can you please cut and paste your votes into this thread, I will then tally them up in my magic spreadsheet and produce theDVDforums mid-way-2002 favourite album list.

Let's try and keep this as a list of albums and not a massive debate about what constitutes a 2002 release.

I'm working on my top ten at the moment but is there any specific reason why we can't include Live/Soundtrack CDs.

I can see why a best of or a compilation of previously released tracks arn't allowed but if someone wants to include a soundtrack like Spiderman or a live album in their top ten of the year there should be no reason why they can't?

Soundtracks are okay as long as they are all by one artist like the Badly Drawn Boy or Belle and Sebastian albums this year but the spiderman soundtrack from multiple artists does not count, live albums are not allowed as they are compilations (even though the songs are in a different form), I'm using the same rules that most music magazines use if they ask you to vote for albums for their end of year polls. I hope that's clear, I just to do things in a standard way.

Thanks for your votes Bish.

It's getting to be quite a respectable list now.

I can see Adges point - there are some tracks on the Spider-Man soundtrack which have appeared on other albums (Jerry Cantrell's contribution) so it could be classed as a sort of compilation.

That was released in October last year and is a compilation of tracks from Veni Vidi Vicious and Barely Legal (with a few others thrown in for good measure). So it fails on both counts, sorry.

I hoped this list would persuade people to listen to and buy albums by new artists, I think the top 20 is a very good selection and it's certainly got me interested in a few new artists which I'm going to listen to soon.

I just hope we can get some more votes.

Perhaps just a best songs of 2002, then it would be a bit easier to select tracks from these bands and songs like Corey Taylors Bother could be in it :)

That is indeed 'Do you realise'. 5th August is a good week for Singles because the new Coldplay track 'In my place' is out that week as is the 'Catch', the third single by 'Leaves', as is the debut Sondre Lerche single and I'm sure there was one or two others that caught my eye for that week.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo.......

Seriously though you'll get a really flat chart (and a massive spreadsheet for me) as people will vote for such a wide variety of stuff......

I'll do the mid-way albums and the end of year albums (just so I can say down three places to number 6 it's ..... And a new entry at number 9 in my Bruno Brookes styleeee).

That was a sort of sneaky, unofficial release to combat the imports of the album that were appearing across the country. It's official release was in January.

So it's staying in based on that.

Oh yeah, this mid-year poll was just to see what was popular now and see what had changed by the end of the year, bloomin' good idea by mullethead too (I just took it on as I have the spreadsheets to work it all out quickly as I used to do this for a music magazine many years ago plus the other thread went a bit mad!! Ahhhh, I see I was confused, go for it mate (I'll look forward to voting) I'll do the albums and you do the individual songs at the end of the year! I think it's worth making people order their votes (so you score higher for higher places) as else you get a really really flat list with 25 things in first place which is a bit odd!

I know, it is a dodgy way of doing it (I normally do it the way you mentioned) but for this list I wanted more items in it to make it more interesting for the moment. As more votes come in the double places disappear anyway (which Is why i've forced people to vote in order).

I've never really liked them, they are alright to have a dance to in a club but that's about it. I think I was really put off by a guy in my student house being really annoying and really into them.... Although I do quite like Scar Tissue but that's about it.... Each to their own I guess (I could rig the votes I suppose and knock them down a few places ;) Only joking, I've too much integrity with my charts to ever do that ).... Each to their own, keep voting folks, I promise not to judge you :) !

simply by staying around for ages everything develops a modicum of misplaced respect.

were it not for anthony kiedis they'd be a pretty good band tho.

Good to see Hoobastank and SOiL in the chart now.

I wonder if we could make this thread last until the end of the year. Maybe it might be worth moving this thread to the classifieds or maybe have a link to this thread in there. The slowly more and more peeps would vote in.

I think it's best to keep with Mulletheads original intention of doing it now and then freezing it and seeing how things have changed by the end of the year (otherwise I'll be making minor adjustments to the spreadsheet every 5 minutes).....

I'll keep the spreadsheet safe and then at the end of the year I'll start a albums of the year thread then compare votes and put on a Bruno Brookes voice and say "Moving up three places it's........."

How long until the final votes can be cast? I think the end of this week would be a good idea because Primal Scream's newie is out next week and that might cause several people to want to change their lists! :)

I think it was agreed that only albums released by the week commencing July 15th were elligible for this particular chart.

New votes and ammendments are in.

Voting ends 9am tomorrow, then the list will be final and set in stone (as The Coral is also out tomorrow and I expect I may want to change my list too)....

I'll then publish every album in the final warts and all list (although I'll be at work so I may have to do it in the evening).

Voting has now ended!

The final list is in my first post.

My Soundtrack of Our Lives album arrived today along with The Coral.

I'm glad The Flaming Lips did so well in the poll, in fact the whole chart is overall pretty respectable, does show what great music taste people have on these forums.

Thanks for everyone who voted hoped you enjoyed voting as much as I enjoyed doing it and I also hope it's inspired some of you to invest in some new albums based upon other forum member choices (like my investment in Soundtrack of Our Lives).

I guess the chart is up for debate now, what does everyone else think of our final list?

I'd vote, but I just haven't been too excited by the albums so far this year. DJ Shadow, The Flaming Lips, Electric Soft Parade, Doves and Badly Drawn Boy have all been good, but not quite mind-blowing. (If I had to pick a favourite, it would be DJ Shadow.) David Holmes' Come Get It I Got It is also a fine listen, but I'd class it as a compilation, so I don't see how can it be eligible here.

One suspects the potentially best albums this year are still to come - Primal Scream and Death In Vegas -, and it would be nice if Suede can get back to the quality of their first two records.

Thanks, I enjoyed doing it.. I've bought some albums as a result of it, so it's all been good...

I'll keep this thread and the list safe then at the end of the year I'll re-compile the list and we'll see who the movers and shakers are.....

Hopefully...

[Mark Goodier]Up 35 Places to Number 1 it's Aim with his second album, the musical wonderland that is Hinterland[/Mark Goodier]

...although I didn't vote it No.1 so can't really complain.

I predict that the RHCP will have the staying power over Doves, but watch for new material from Suede, possibly Radiohead and a few others too.

I'm raising this from the dead to remind you all, that I will soon be starting the albums of the year poll (so you can look at what you voted for mid-year and start thinking about your top ten for the year as a whole (and remember the rules from page one)) BUT DON'T VOTE NOW THE LINES AREN'T OPEN!!!!

I'll probably start it early December as as far as I can tell there's nothing interesting due for release that month other than "The Best Christmas Album In The World Ever" ad infinitum...

So, get your thinking caps on as I’m preparing my special spreadsheets for some big voting!! Will “The Doves” be knocked off their mid-year number one slot???

REMEMBER DON'T VOTE NOW THE LINES AREN'T OPEN!!!!

THIS IS JUST AN EARLY WARNING

Well I missed the voting on this pone but will deffo vote on the end of year one.

It's gonna be a toughy though as I've just done up a quick list from memory and there are already 12 albums on it all of which I want in my final ten. Decisions Decisons

Disappearer

1. The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots
2. Cooper Temple Clause - See This Through And Leave
3. Doves - The Last Broadcast
4. Gemma Hayes - Night On My Side
5. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - BMRC
6. The Vines - Highly Evolved
7. The Notwist - Neon Golden
8. Oasis - Heathen Chemistry
9. Eminem - The Eminem Show
10. Electric Soft Parade - Holes In The Wall

What the hell was I thinking?!?

But seriously, I know some of these definitely won't be in my Top 10 anymore, but some of them definitely will, although not necessarily in the same order.

Mr M0by

Looking at my list from July.

Ok, the best are.... and favoured order.:)

01. Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots
02. Moby - 18
03. Soundtrack Of Our Lives - Behind The Music
04. Doves - Last Broadcast
05. Badly Drawn Boy - About a boy OST

and some other notable mentions for which I don't expect to be in the final years Top 10....

06. LHB - Tell 'Em Who We Are
07. Faultline - Your Love Means Everything
08. Seafood - When Do We Start Fighting... / Coursework
09. DJ Shadow - Private Press
10. Remy Zero - Golden Hum

My then Top 5 will still likely make the revised Top 10, though not neccessarily in that order, but positions 6-10 will be gone.... just as I thought.

Adge you see to have confused yourself with two spellings of Alanis' surname so myabe you should add the two togther. Not that it will make much difference is it 's hardly going to send her flying to the top but if we're gonna do it "we might as well do it right." :D

Oh and you managed to spell Morissette wrong in both of them.
