A Tale of Two Sisters
A Tale of Two Sisters
Quick summary: I thought Tale of Two Sisters was an effective fusion of visceral and psychological horror. There were quite a few moments which had me covering my face with my bedsheet (and I'm not afraid to admit it). In many ways, it is also quite tragic. Overall, Tale of Two Sisters has enough originality, twists, and scares to make it more than just another run-of-the mill Asian horror movie (despite obvious influences from several high profile Eastern and Western horror films of recent years). If you want to specifically discuss the plot of Tale of Two Sisters, I have started a thread: Tale of Two Sisters plot discussion Last edited by bruce-leroy; 10-11-2003 at 22:35. |

Not quite on-topic, but our friends at koreandvds.com have some Disney titles new to Korea on their site. These include "Fun & Fancy Free", "Ichabod & Toad", "Melody Time" (excellent), etc etc etc.
More interestingly, they include volumes of Tom & Jerry, "Lady & the Tramp" and "Bambi"!!! The label is not obvoiusly Disney, though the art-work is Disney-based. What do you lot chinney-reckon? Steve

Think we should raise the Jolly Roger?
BTW, nice work on the Tale of Two Sisters reviews, 68monkey and Bruce-Leroy. I was going to go for the third Whispering Corridors but bad word on that and a positive vibe on "Tale" have changed me mind! Steve |

TALE OF TWO SISTERS request:
For the members here who read Korean, I have a request regarding TALE OF TWO SISTERS. There's a scene in the movie where Su-mi reads a note that has been slipped under her door. The camera lingers on this note for quite a long time, but no translation is provided. What does it say? Thanks in advance. ![]() And Barry, I'm looking forward to reading your Memories of Murder review. I should receive my L.E. in the next day or so and want to watch it before reading.

I was hoping that note would unlock the key to the whole movie.

Yeah i got it the other day there too.
Like the first movie this is not great but it is still very entertaining.
Its like a Korean funny version of The Long Kiss Goodnight. The film had me entertained from start to finnish. The action handled by Kim Won Jin was slick and there was plenty of laughs to be had. Its good clean fun and i would recommend it to anyone. If anyone is buying this film and expecting to see Zhang Zi Yi you will be very dissapointed as the film is over before she makes a very brief cameo appearance. 7 out of 10

OK, it's a bit late but Son Ji-yin? Crikey!
That is all ![]() EDIT: haven't plumped for MWIAG 2 yet as I haven't seen the first (could be waiting a long time for the Premier Asia R2): is it a requirement to view the original beforehand? Last edited by Koku; 15-11-2003 at 20:35. |

CRAZY FIRST LOVE (Korean R3, 2-discs)
![]() ![]() To many this will seem to be another typical Korean comedy with a slushy ending. It has the ingredients - Cha Tae-Hyun and Son Ji-Yin playing teenagers (step brother and sister - she moves in with his family when her mother dies of illness when she is still in nappies) who have a love/hate relationship at school with CTH being asked by his prospective father-in-law to improve on school exam grades, protect his daughter at University from the other predatory male students, get a law degree and pass the bar before being allowed to marry his childhood first love. What you actually get is a typical Korean comedy with a slushy ending. Where it differs and in a brave move which I don't think fully pays off is casting both the leads totally against type.CTH is usually associated with the kindly boy next door. Here is plays (at least for the first half) a moronic underachieving student with a bad afro-style haircut. Slobbering after the attentions of his first love SJY, getting into fights and sucking up big time to her father - who also happens to be his school teacher. SJY, normally the innocent, vulnerable virgin plays a sassy, self assurred and mature acting sexbomb! Laying into her salivating suitor whilst at school and then getting dripping wet in THAT swimsuit in an attempt to seduce him. As with most Korean films there are reasons for, in particular, SJY's behaviour which all ties into the ending but I won't spoil for you. A film which I think will split the viewers right down the middle. There is no doubt it underachieves bearing in mind the talent on show. The script just doesn't flow and the proposity of some of the set pieces and also uncomfortable scenes - SJY's father smearing cream over the butts of several students he had just beaten with a stick and not being quite sure whether or not the 2 leads should be allowed to court (they are step brother and sister) all add to this unease. There is also very little in the way of a memorable soundtrack. Personally I liked it. Not going to get into my Top 10 but there are laugh out loud moments, that extremely sexy scene where SJY puts on her bikini bottoms and comes out all wet from the pool and of course the ending to wrap things up. Having said that though, the ending didn't really wrap things up fully. ![]() The DVD has a superb transfer, DTS and excellent subtitles. Also has some great behind the scenes interviews (no subs). Ono gives this 6.9 out of 10 ![]() No new babes in this film to rate but Son Yi-Yin gets a couple of notches closer to the top. :norty: ![]() Last edited by Ono; 10-01-2004 at 20:54. |

Ono nice review
Watched my 1st Korean film in ages today and it was cartoon ... Wonderful Days ... Like resurrection of the little matchstick girl this has gotten some very unfair reviews because I have to say I loved this ... yeah the story wasn't anything new and the characters were poorly developed but this ain't no Hur Jin Ho (x'mas in August) movie ... what we do have is a perfect mixture of visuals and music which left me breathless and emotionally involved ... the last 20 mins in this movie is fantastic ... This is NO Final Fantasy ... go get your copy ... Last edited by Cirrus888; 16-11-2003 at 16:31. |

I haven't seen Crazy First Love yet, but not since Phoebe Cates in Fast Times Times At Ridgemont High has a girl in a swimsuit caused such a stir in the trouser region.
