The ISE machine is made by a swedish company called Asko. Asko also make machines for Maytag.

The warranty covers parts and labour.

Who knows what the future holds?

I'll update everyone in 10 years!

Ah yes, Asko, part of the same company that made Servis washing machines before it went bust.

We tend to get 3-4 years out of one if we're lucky but it is in use everyday.
We made the decision about 4 machines back to pay around the £300 per machine and just scrap 'em when they go wrong unless it's a simple fix.

Our Bosch washer is still going 11 years on ... sure I've had to pick the odd bit of bra wire out of it and I had to replace a pipe, but other than that its been peachy. 18months is an unreasonably short lifespan (for normal use)

I understand that the quality of the parts put in washing machines made in the last few years has reduced considerably, and the majority of makes share cheap, plastic pattern parts. So a pump in an expensive Bosch may be the same pump as a Beko.

The site http://www.washerhelp.co.uk has loads of information - but be aware that it is affliated with ISE so take it all with a pinch of salt. The site http://ukwhitegoods.co.uk/ is also part of ISE and also full of information + an active forum for all things repair wise for all manner of white goods appliances.

There is no magic bullet - but hopefully we've made the best choice given the limited manufacturers making a quality product.

Came to the same realisation myself, which is why I thought I'd get an AEG (over Bosh), the 5 year warranty means if it breaks its their problem and not mine, also dont have to run round trying to find another machine (and delivered and installed), too much hassle.

Again, the 5 years is v.unlikely to cover wear and tear which will come into play in the 5 years and therefore is your problem.

Last time we had our repaired we asked the engineer about buying a "better" quality machine. His view was that it might be less likely to break down, but if it does, it will be a lot more expensive to repair.

Hoover washer-dryer. Still going after 6 years with regular use (2 to 3 times a week). Admittedly I also have a water-softener installed which may or may not prolong the life of the machine.

Just a quick update.

I rang the Neff hotline and they got someone out to fix it today... Blocked pipes or something. How does bad water end up smelling like rotten eggs?!?!?

Anyways, top class service and no hassle what so ever from the engineer, even if he did look like a pikey! (the 1st woman at the call centre however was a damn nightmare).

Wonder how long it will last.....

It's caused by bacteria. It is worse now due to lower washing temperatures which doesn't kill them off.

You were lucky they didn't try charging you tbh as blocked pipes usually means poor user maintenance in that you haven't done a service wash (a 90 degree wash which cleans it all out). It would also be advisable to bung some descaler through it every now and again too, although don't get taken in by the 'Calgon every wash or your machine will die' marketing blurb.

We bought a Miele washer-dryer 8 years ago. Washer-dryers are meant to be even more unreliable than washing machines, but Miele is the Rolls-Royce of laundry appliances and we don't have room for a separate washer and dryer in our tiny kitchen, so I thought it was worth a punt.

In that time it's had two repairs - a new heating element and new condenser unit. Otherwise going as strong as ever

I'd have been very miffed if it broke down after 18 months!

A.

On this subject of washing machines and lifespan.

The new consumer guarantee/lifespan rules that are in place now.............

Did I hear someome say that we now have 2 years warranty on things?

I know there's the 12 month (as we've had for years) and also the new 5 or 6 years MAX on how long you would expect an item to last (depending on price and type of item)

Just looking at some web sites and they offering 3 years extended for around to £70 to £100 mark.

Do we feel there's an expected lifespan on washing machines or a period of time you could expect free repairs after purchase?

My Miele came with a 10 year P&L warranty, but the marketing bumph said they are designed to last a minimum 20 years.

http://www.miele.co.uk/washing-machines/reliability/

over the lifetime it works out cheaper than 4 cheap machines, and lots btter for the environment.
